YOUR COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS ROOM Room 13/14 The weeks continued to be very busy since our last newsletter, with the final week of February ending the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, I Love to Read Month and Victory School s Spirit Week. We also welcomed March s Nutrition Month by sharing some great tips on healthy eating and by sharing some great go snacks, especially green ones on St. Patrick s Day! Part of our Spirit Week daily events included, crazy hat or hair day, wear red and white day and wear your favourite team sport logo day, hats and jerseys were welcome. As you can see from the photos, the spirit of Spirit week was certainly alive and well in preschool and it was quickly pointed out by one of the children that, Oh, Mrs. Edwards, you have two birds on your hat! (It was interesting that there was no mention of the crazy blue hair though.) We also made some pretty crazy looking hats and thank Mrs. Hardie and Mrs. Anandranistakis for taking time from their busy schedules to welcome us in the office as we paraded through to showcase our creations. Anyway, for at least a few days, it may have looked like many of us had the same hair stylist, shopped at the same red and white clothing store and belonged to the same sports teams but oh what fun! Once again, we have participated in Scholastic Book Clubs ClassroomsCare. After reading 100 books, this year, we have helped make our planet greener. Scholastic Book Clubs is helping to conserve 50,000 sq. km. of Canada s Boreal Forest and a donation will be made on our behalf because we read 100 books before Earth Day, April 22, 2010; as a matter of fact, we read 100 books by February 24, 2010! Congratulations to all of our participating families; together we continue to make a difference!
Thank you Madame Cameron for sharing such great books with us during February s I Love to Read month, March s Nutrition month and any other time we are looking for books to share at preschool! We all loved meeting the llama in the red pajama and of course the story about this very interesting animal was also enjoyed! We had fun reading the story Nothing Sticks Like a Shadow by Ann Tompert and since March is nutrition month, what better shadows are there than those of fruits! To celebrate the end of February s I Love to Read month, we made some very colourful and wide eyed pop-up books. What do you think, is it a beak or just a very wide moving mouth? Books shared since our last newsletter were; Under My Hood I Have a Hat by Karla Kuskin, llama llama red pajama by Anna Dewdney, Nothing Sticks Like a Shadow by Ann Tompert, I Love Mud and Mud Loves Me by Vicki Stephens, MOTT S A is for Apple and all things that grow! by Megan E. Bryant and Monique Z. Stephens, Looking for Leprechauns by Sheila Keenan, The Luckiest St. Patrick s Day Ever! By Teddy Slater and The Little GREEN PEEPHOLE Book by Dorothy Savage. It may be too early for spring buds or leaves on the trees outside, but Our 2009/2010 Preschool Tree of Generosity located across the hall from Room 14, is already full of leaves and bursting with colour! Each leaf represents the kindness of staff, families and businesses from our community who have volunteered their time and/or donated items such as books, toys, food, juice etc. to our preschool programs throughout the school year. As you can see from the photo, we have and continue to have so much to be thankful for, just as we have in previous years. Thank you to, Auntie Connie for the great scrapbooking and craft supplies. You always have such great treasures to share with us and they always help us to make some great works of art. Thanks also to, Mrs. Marion for the playdough, Grandma Laura for the greeting cards, Mrs. Bloom for baking and Mr. Bloom for bringing and sharing snacks, Mrs. Prince and Mrs. Resch for
bringing snack, Mrs. Loeppky for the delicious yogurt, Mr. Balzer for the coffee, Mrs. Cullum for milk, to the Bloom family for the toy donation and Madame Cameron for the table covers which are sure to come in handy during our creative hours. We shared the book, I Love Mud and Mud Loves Me by Vicki Stephens. Although some of us found getting messy quite enjoyable, it was clear that not all of us shared that same love. Well, at least not all of us were sure if we shared that same love, but we do think that our not so little pigs had a great time! During the March Parent Teacher interviews, we held our second annual Used Clothing Exchange and were so very pleased with its success. THANK YOU TO ALL who so generously donated items towards this event and to all who were able to take advantage of the great deals! We were overwhelmed with the number of items this year and again so appreciative of the great clothing and footwear. Many families from the community were so happy with the bargains; after all what could be better than free! Thanks also to our volunteers; Mrs. Kaner-Isaak for coordinating our volunteers and helping to deliver the excess clothing, to Halle, Darian, Deven, Rustyn, Jared and Braden (our Victory School students) for helping to carry all of the many bags and boxes into the Art Room where the exchange took place and for helping to carry the items left over from the exchange out to the vehicle for delivery, to Mrs. Boulard for helping to set-up (well past dinner time!) and to Mrs. Kaner-Isaak, Mrs. Boulard, Mrs. Resch, Mrs. Rempel, Hannah and Kayla (two students from Garden City Collegiate) for helping to run the event during the day and evening shifts. As the saying goes, it takes a village to raise a child and at Victory School, we are so proud to be the village that s helping to raise our children!!! Community really does begin here. Items left over from the exchange were delivered to the Elwick Village Resource Centre located at Fife Street. At week 14 of our pocket change for poverty World Vision gift of giving Fundraiser, we were happy to report that we had raised $ We will continue to collect loose change and as a group, we will decide shortly after spring break how that money will be gifted. Thanks again to all who have and continue to generously donate to this very worthwhile fundraiser! Hot lunch is such a fun time for our families and of course a welcome change, for students and a break for parents and caregivers from thinking about and making lunch. This would not be possible without the wonderful Victory School volunteers and we thank those who have so generously given of their time to provide us with these tasty hot lunches! Good Green GO snacks, veggies and fruit were our March 17, 2010 St. Patrick s Day treats and with the luck of the Irish we were thankful for being lucky enough to have another great day at preschool and lucky enough to have such a great space to be lucky in! How much luckier can we be than to spend the day sharing snacks, circle time and creating great hats to celebrate the day with our family and friends. We sure hope that you were lucky
to have a Happy St. Patrick s Day too! We found the Leprechaun at the end of our rainbows and his pot of gold, did you find yours? Whether we are passing the bean bag, carrying the bean bag, painting, bookmaking, snacking, playing with family and friends one thing we do know for sure, is that we ll all be happy once the weather warms up and we don t have to wear all of this stuff! Happy Birthday to; Gavin, Shea, Hudson, Jayme, Logan and Noah, all of whom celebrate their birthdays during the month of April!
We also know that eating right will keep us healthy and that we will continue to grow strong if we feed our tummies with good food and water, not sugary Stop snacks and drinks. As you can see, we re already making great choices and with the use of mirrors we were able to make look-a-like faces for our very well fed bodies. Can you see the resemblance? No matter if it is a smooth road or a rough road, take care of yourself and remember to take that much needed break when necessary. As always remember to exercise your face and keep on SMILING; especially during April s National Oral Health month! Happy Spring Break! See you at the school! Dianne Edwards Community Coordinator
