Web Design with Dreamweaver Points available: 150 NAME: DATE: Final Project (100 points) (Must be returned within one week of delivery) Create a five page Web Site on a school appropriate topic that includes the following criteria: Create a primary external style sheet that manages the layout and cosmetic appearance of the Web Site The index page must include a fully functional navigation bar which is created by incorporating Spry or an Image Map technique The Web Site must be professional in appearance The Web Site must be free from grammar and spelling errors; however, Lorem Ipsum may be used for much of the Site s content Images and ample white space must be utilized on each page The Web Site must include at least one form, one table, an ordered list, and unordered list, and a definition list Each page must include a footer Each page must be well-formed and validated The entire Web site, including all assets must be uploaded to a free Web Hosting server Create a written proposal that supports the following techniques: 1. Site plan (flow-chart) of the complete Web Site, including navigation structure. 2. Official quote proposal to the owner of the company. 1

Provide the most correct answer (2 points each): 1) Charlie is a content manager for the website at XYZ Community College. Charlie is responsible for creating and maintaining the web pages for the athletic department. He uses Dreamweaver CS5 to update the pages at the beginning of the new school year. In Dreamweaver, what would Charlie use to change the font? A) History Panel B) Property Inspector C) Code Inspector D) Font Palette 2) Which of the following statements concerning images on web pages is false? A) The majority of information contained in most web pages appears in the form of images. B) Images should be used sparingly. C) Images should complement the content of pages in a website. D) Images make web pages more stimulating than pages that contain only text. 3) An example of the code for an external link would be as follows: A) link B) elink C) href D) src 4) The name of a named anchor is always preceded by a(n) in the Link text box in the Property inspector. A) asterisk (*) B) pound sign (#) C) percent sign(%) D) ampersand (&) 5) To create a new row identical to the one above it at the end of a table, place the insertion point in the last cell, and then press. A) Tab B) Option C) Ctrl D) Enter 2

6) Which of the following statements about planning a form is FALSE? A) Before you use Dreamweaver to create a form, it s a good idea to write down the information you want to collect and the order in which you want to collect it. B) It s a good idea to make a sketch of the form for your CGI. C) Planning your form content at the beginning saves you from spending time organizing the information when you create the form in Dreamweaver. D) When planning your form content, you should organize the information in a logical order that will make sense to users. 7) Which method of processing information collected in a form uses applications that reside on your web server and interacts with the form information collected? A) Server-side scripting B) User-side scripting C) Client-side scripting D) Active scripting 8) All graphics should be given a(n) message that describes the image. A) alt B) src C) img D) browser 9) You can create widgets yourself using the Spry framework if you are familiar with. A) AJAX B) Perl C) Java D) all of the above 10) The CSS method of page layout uses tags and Cascading Style Sheets. A) table B) div C) XML D) fluid 3

Short Answer (5 points each). 11) List at least three reasons why it is important to learn about deprecated tags, even though Dreamweaver no longer uses them by default. 3 reasons to learn about deprecated tags are that if you go to edit a webpage created by someone else and they used those kinds of tags, you will need to know them to understand how to use or modify them. Secondly, you might need to use them if a certain browser cannot read other tags. Third, you will be a much better coder if you understand various ways to code. 12) When might a link be broken? What might cause an orphaned link? What are the best tools for testing and managing links? 1. A web server changes locations or goes down/the site is outdated. 2. Orphaned links don't point to any pages on the web site. 3. The check links site wide feature and manually testing in browser. Define vector graphics. Include an explanation of how vector graphics are created, what they consist of, and what they render. 13) Explain fixed layout and a liquid layout and the differences between the two. When would one of these layouts be better than the other? Fixed Layout: everything is positioned with pixels and will stay the same regardless of browser, liquid: everything is positioned in percentages and will resize accordingly. Pixels ensure when the layout is rendered everything is proportional while a liquid layout will always render with elements positioned in a specific layout 14) What are two ways to include sound on a page? Flash Movies.swf, Flash Video.flv (Other players such as windows media or quicktime with a bit of javascript also work) 4

15) Discuss the need to develop a flexible naming system when it comes to styles. When you create styles, remember to use names that refer to the way each style is used rather than its characteristics. As Web sites evolve, the characteristics of each style might change. For example, if you name a subheading style blue_medium to reflect the text color and later change the look of the site so that subheading text is red, the style name no longer makes sense. After you know what divs you must create and what CSS styles you need for a site, and you have developed a flexible naming schema for the styles, you can add the divs to the page and create the styles in an external style sheet. 5
