Please restate your information in your own words. Do NOT copy word for word what the information says! Timeline Organizer: Due: Tuesday, February 19 Complete the timeline organizer with at least 6 important events in your person s life. Write your facts in complete sentences. You will need this information to create a final product in class. Important Book Poem: Due: Tuesday, February 26 Margaret Wise Brown was the author of the book entitled The Important Book. Use the model to write a poem entitled The Important Thing using your famous person as the subject of the poem. Written Report Due: Tuesday, February 26 Type or write your final copy in your best writing about your famous person. Biography Presentation Speech Due: Thursday, February 28 This activity will give you an opportunity to meet your benchmark in public speaking. You will also have a chance to get a little creative! All components except for the speech presentation will be completed in class. Students will receive time to read, learn about, explore, and peer-review during our reading block in order to successfully meet all given deadlines.

What did/does this person do to become famous? How has this person made an impact on others lives? Interesting information about the person (you may want to include famous quotes, if any).

4 Important Book Poem Example: The important thing about Sir Francis Drake is that he was an English explorer. He was the first Englishman to circumnavigate the world. He followed secret orders from Queen Elizabeth as a pirate who attacked Spanish ships and towns. He later became Vice-Admiral of the English navy as commanded by the queen. But, the most important thing about Sir Francis Drake is that he defeated the Spanish Armada and kept England safe. ***Be sure to draw a picture to accompany your poem!*** Please fill in the blanks: The important thing about is that he/she was/is a(n) He/She was/is (1 st detail) He/She (2 nd detail) He/She later (3 rd detail) But, the most important thing about is that he/she (4 th and most important detail)

5 Written Report The following format will help you organize your written report: Introduction Paragraph: You should introduce who your famous person is in a creative and exciting way that grabs your readers attention, makes them curious, and motivates them to want to read more! This paragraph should explain Why this person is famous. (Should be 2-3 sentences) First Detail Paragraph: Using appropriate transition words and strong word choice, explain: Where this person was born and in what year. Where this person grew up (Should be at least 2-3 sentences) Second Detail Paragraph: Using appropriate transition words and strong word choice, explain: What did/does this person do to become famous? (Should be at least 2-3 sentences) Third Detail Paragraph: Using appropriate transition words and strong word choice, explain: How has this person made an impact on others lives? Any other information you found interesting or would like to include. (Should be at least 2-3 sentences) Conclusion Paragraph: You should conclude your paper by answering one of the following questions: What have you learned from reading about this person? Has this person influenced you or encouraged you to make goals or changes in your own life? Pick a character trait that you think fits this person and explain why. Use examples from your other paragraphs to back up your answer.

6 Biography Presentation Speech (Home Support Component) You have the choice between three ways to present your famous person to the class: 1. Calling all actors and actresses! Dress up as your famous person and pretend you are the famous person actually speaking to the class! 2. Want to act, but feeling a little shy? Make a puppet resembling your person! We ll have a puppet stage available for you! Your puppet will be speaking to the class as if they were your actual famous person! 3. Feeling a little crafty and creative? Try creating a brown paper bag report! This allows you to show your creative thinking skills and drawing abilities! **For specific instructions for each project choice, please see the papers attached** Prepare a brief (1-2 minute) speech telling about your contributions, and about your life. Please rehearse at home. Try to memorize your speech if possible. You may use your notes if needed! Props that would be connected to your person s life are encouraged. Please make sure your props are school appropriate (no weapons etc) Students will receive time in class to work on these projects if desired, however, please note: I have markers, crayons, colored pencils, glue, and construction paper ONLY. All other materials should come from home. If students and parents decide to complete this portion at home, this is completely fine.

7 Dress-Up as Your Person 1. Find clothes around your house that could resemble the famous person you are studying. (Please do not buy new clothes!) 2. Please hold something that resembles your person. (For example, if you are Betsy Ross, you could hold the American flag because she was the person who sewed our first flag!) 3. Make sure that when you write your 1-2 minute speech, you are speaking as if you were your actual person. Remember: you are acting! Puppet Presentation 1. Find a base that you would like to use for your puppet. (A sock or brown paper lunch bag will work just fine) 2. Using an assortment of craft materials, design your puppet s outfit, face, and body to resemble your famous person! Please be creative and do not use any store-bought toys. 4. In one of your puppet s hands, he/she should be holding something that represents your person. (For example, if you are Betsy Ross, you could hold the American flag because she was the person who sewed our first flag!) 5. Make sure that when you write your 1-2 minute speech, you are speaking as if you were your actual person. Remember: you are acting! Paper Bag Report 1. Get a large brown paper bag in great condition. 2. On the front of the bag, cover any designs or words with a piece of construction paper. 3. Print the name of your famous person in large letters on the front. You must be able to see the name from across the room. Make the letters colorful. 4. Draw a picture of the person or something that would help the audience visualize the person s fame on the front of the bag. (E.g. Albert Einstein could have a big colorful sign that said E=MC). 5. Make a neat and colorful frame or border around the front with items that help describe the famous person. 6. Put your name on the bottom right corner of the bag. This must be large and in color. 7. Decorate the sides of the bag with words or pictures about the famous person. 8. Put 8-10 items that have something to do with the famous person s life into your bag. Only 4 of those items can be pictures.
