1 Recycling RefresherUSE THROUGH Fall 2013 Published for Residents of Clark County, WASHINGTON Recycling Done Right Closing the recycling loop is important. When recycling is done right at the curb, the materials you recycle may come back to you in other forms. Visit Clark County s Recycling Done Right website for more information: 526 tons of cans = 510,061 aluminum baseball bats 1,423 tons of bottles In 2011, Clark County residents recycled enough aluminum cans to make the equivalent of half a million baseball bats and enough plastic bottles to create the equivalent of almost 1.5 million brand-new fleece jackets. = Milk the most out of it Did you know that Vancouver is home to the Northwest s primary producer of milk cartons? By recycling these containers properly, we help to sustain these local jobs and produce products that we all use. 1,479,888 polyester fleece jackets 1
2 Extend your recycling reach with additional services and support Multifamily Recycling Do you manage townhouses, apartment complexes or other multifamily dwellings? Do you live in an apartment and would like to be more involved in the recycling at your complex? Waste Reduction Staff can assist with signs, decals and education. Single Family Recycling Most questions about recycling in your home can be answered by our customer service depart ment. We can also do presentations to your group (Lions, Rotary, Scouts, etc.) upon request. Tours By taking a tour of the transfer station, you can learn how your recycling is processed and where your garbage goes. Participants must be 8+ years old and we prefer to have groups of 8 or more. We may be able to accommodate individuals or smaller groups, as space and time allow. Waste Reduction Specialist Melissa Tiefenthaler explains how recycling is sorted to local schoolchildren. Events You have probably seen waste reduction staff at local events. We attend many community events to answer recycling questions and lead educational activities. We can also help you with a garbage and recycling plan for your community event. Waste Reduction Specialists Gregg Hayward and Terra Heilman helped with waste stations at a recent fundraising event. Here, Terra tests Gregg s recycling knowledge. (Photo courtesy of Yvonne Sablan) Construction & Demolition Do you build things? Take them down? Ever thought to yourself, This must be recyclable! We have staff that can help you reduce waste at the job site. We can also assist with some common green certification programs. Business Recycling Need recycling and waste reduction assistance at your job? Specialists are dedicated to helping businesses navigate the recycling world and reduce waste. Green team assistance, posters, decals, and interior recycling bins are available at no charge. Business Food Waste If you work in the restaurant or grocery business, you probably see a lot of food waste. Our Waste Reduction staff can help you determine what can be recycled and how to properly handle that waste. Waste Reduction Specialist Sarah Adams answers questions for community members. Sarah works primarily with the business community in Clark County. School Recycling Your child s school likely has the Save Organic Scraps (SOS) program. This program aims to help students recycle and compost much of the waste generated in classrooms and lunch rooms. Waste Connections provides financial and program support to SOS. Wastebusters A new waste reduction competi tion from Clark County Environmental Services The first Wastebusters champions were crowned at the Recycled Arts Festival in late June. Congratu lations to the Crawford family, who reduced their waste output by an outstanding 72%! Starting in mid-may, the Crawfords and five other families from Clark County competed against each other to reduce their waste. Over the following six weeks, the families were challenged to go plastic-free for a week, to perform a waste audit, and to reduce their food scraps. Discounting the bad weeks (don t have a graduation party in the middle of a waste reduction competition), the families reduced their waste on average by about 50%! For their efforts, each family received a Northwest Forest Pass (an experience-based gift). The Crawfords, for their most excellent waste-bustin efforts, received a Wastebusters trophy from a local artist and their very own Kindle Fire. You can check out how to reduce your own waste at the Wastebusters website: Call ext for more information. Be on the lookout for another round of Wastebusters competition!
