3 StarVista StarVista, formerly Youth and Family Enrichment Services (YFES), is a private, non profit multidisciplinary agency, in San Mateo County, dedicated to enriching the lives of individuals and families by transforming challenges into opportunities. Our core values are reflected in our commitment to building skills and enhancing strengths by collaborating with youth, adults and the family unit as a whole to effect positive change. We do this by providing a comprehensive array of free or low cost bilingual social services to residents of San Mateo County. Our diverse, community based programming provides services for children, adolescents, and adults through individual, couples, group and family counseling. Some of the programs we offer include: schoolbased, residential, and counseling services, as well as treatment for women and adolescent girls with cooccurring disorders. StarVista has contracts and collaborative relationships with San Mateo County Behavioral Health and Recovery Services, Juvenile Justice, Human Services Agency, police departments, school districts, and other agencies within the area. Our administrative office is conveniently located on the San Francisco Peninsula off of Highway 101 in San Carlos. We also have a number of ancillary sites throughout San Mateo County including Redwood City, San Mateo, and Daly City. It is the goal of StarVista to be an outstanding youth and family serving agency, strengthening communities by empowering children, youth, adults and families to overcome challenges through education, counseling, and residential services. To achieve this mission, we encourage trainees, interns and employees to continually strive to improve their skills. We provide various types of training and opportunities for continuing education and individual development in pursuit of this goal. We believe (a) children and families are our future and our number one priority; (b) treatment should be provided by skilled and specially trained multidisciplinary teams to provide quality care and treatment; (c) interventions should occur in a safe and nurturing environment to foster growth and change; (d) treatment of the whole family is crucial to ensure long term success; (e) every child and family is entitled to be treated with respect and dignity; (f) education and the opportunity to learn at every level is the right of all; (g) treatment is individualized to meet the specific needs of each individual and his/her family; and (h) our focus is success oriented and reality based. StarVista Clinical Training Programs The StarVista Clinical Training Program is an organized professional program with the goal of providing high quality training in the provision of community based clinical services. Training and supervision focus on skill development through field experience, education and support. Clinical services provided by interns and trainees include the provision of relevant psychotherapy services. The Clinical Training staff work with trainees to provide services utilizing current empirical and scientific information, a variety of conceptual and theoretical bases, and multiple methods in order to meet the needs of the consumers of those services. It is the mission of StarVista to provide the highest possible quality of training. Training experiences can include the following domains: Psychotherapeutic interventions with children, adults and families, psycho education and prevention programming, co occurring disorders assessment and treatment, and multidisciplinary treatment team participation. MSW students are placed in specific StarVista programs where they will receive a majority of their training experiences (see chart). Page 3
4 StarVista s professional staff includes psychologists, social workers, marriage and family therapists, and highly trained paraprofessionals in the areas of mental health, child development and substance abuse issues. Weekly individual and group supervision is provided by Licensed Clinical Social Workers. Weekly in service training seminars are provided throughout the training year. It is the goal of the StarVista Clinical Training Program to consolidate learning experiences from graduate school into an integrated set of professional attitudes, knowledge, skills and behavior. Trainees act as team members, consulting with each discipline as needed. Professional seminars, experience and training are set in place to socialize interns into the field and prepare each trainee to practice at the independent level, once licensed. At the close of the training year, the trainee should experience significant development and/or consolidation of professional and clinical skills. Page 4
