1 GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN SOCIAL WORK SWD5120 SOCIAL WORK PRACTICUM 1 Social Work Practicum Structure 1.1 The Social Work Practicum (SWD5120) consists of: (a) Field practicum (b) Field seminars (c) Term paper (d) Assessment and evaluation 1.2 SWD5120 is offered every semester. 1.3 Students are allowed to take SWD5120 if they have already taken or are concurrently taking SWD5103 Contemporary Social Work Practice. 1.4 Students are to register for SWD5120 on-line during the on-line module registration period. The on-line module registration schedule is posted at Students can only enrol for SWD5120 in the semester which they are able to complete the 400-hour field practicum and all the field seminars. 2 Field Practicum 2.1 Students are required to fulfill 400 hours for the field practicum. The fieldwork hours do not include attendance at field seminars. Completion of 400 hours practicum hours: Semester 1 AY2011/ October 2011 Semester 2 AY2011/ March 2012 Semester 1 AY2012/ October 2012 Semester 2 AY2012/ March 2013 The Department requires students to have at least 2 hours of face to face supervision on a weekly basis. As the one and only placement, the emphasis will be on casework with individuals and families. Administration and training activities will not be included in the 400 hours. Volunteer management and programme planning can be included only if they are part of the tasks included in the learning contract. A maximum of 100 hours of non-direct work may be included in the 400 hours, subject to approval. However, hours of non-direct work are not recognized by the Singapore Association of Social Work Accreditation Board for accreditation. 2.2 The field practicum may be arranged at any agency, including a student s place of employment. 2 2.2.1 Supervision of field practicum at a student s place of employment has to be on a voluntary basis (i.e. without honorarium) Supervision of field practicum outside a student s place of employment could either be on a voluntary basis (i.e. without honorarium) or with honorarium (i.e. $400 per student supervised). 2.3 Procedures for field practicum: Source for Field Supervisor. The Supervisor must have an academic qualification in social work and at least 4 years of social work working experience after obtaining his/her qualification in social work Submit the following forms to the Department at least 2 months prior to the intended commencement date of the field practicum: (a) Indemnity Form (b) Details of Field Practicum Form (c) Personal Particulars Form (of Supervisor) (if supervision is with honorarium) (d) CV of Supervisor (if supervision is with honorarium) (e) Payment of Honorarium through Bank Account Form (if supervision is with honorarium) Start the field practicum once the Field Supervisor receives an appointment letter and a field supervisor s package from the Department (if supervision is without honorarium) or the Faculty (if supervision is with honorarium) Remind the Field Supervisor to submit the following forms to the Department at the end of the field practicum: (a) Student s Learning Objectives (b) Field Practicum Log Sheet (c) Evaluation Form Deadlines of Submission of forms to the Department at the end of the practicum: 2.4 Evaluation Semester 1 AY2011/ October 2011 Semester 2 AY2011/ April 2012 Semester 1 AY2012/ October 2012 Semester 2 AY2012/ April At the end of the field practicum, an evaluation session will take place between the Field Supervisor and the student Students will be evaluated on the following core areas: (a) Ability to relate to people (b) Communication and organizational skills Page 2 of 8
3 (c) (d) (e) Interviewing skills Assessment and intervention skills Professional values and work habits A grade will be recommended by the Field Supervisor for the student s performance in the field practicum at the end of the evaluation session. 3 Field Seminars 3.1 The integration of theory and practice in social work education is further promoted for students through regularly scheduled field seminars at the Department. 3.2 Objectives of field seminars: (a) Integrate lectures with practice skills and issues (b) Emphasize and discuss the importance of values (c) Systematically guide students through the social work process in a small group setting (d) Highlight significance of human diversity in cross-cultural practice (e) Increase students self-awareness (presumptions, established patterns of behaviour) and ability to reflect 3.3 A series of 8 field seminars of 3 hours each will be held each semester. The seminars are held from 6:30 9:30pm. 3.4 It is mandatory for students to attend the field seminars during the semester which they have enrolled for SWD5120, unless they are absent with valid reasons (e.g. on emergency leave or illness, in which case a medical certificate must be produced). Attendance will be taken. 3.5 In preparation for the field seminars, students will be asked to videotape, audio-tape or role-play, a minimum of 2 interviews which will be used as feedback to students on practice skills during the seminar sessions. 3.6 Students are required to do 2 case presentations of individual clients/ projects during the field seminars. The case presentations will be graded. 3.7 Students are also required to submit a summary (about 1,000 words) of one of the presented cases for assessment. 3.8 The topics for the field seminars are listed in Appendix 1. 4 Term Paper 4.1 Students have to write a term paper of about 2,000 words (excluding appendix). This paper will be graded. 4.2 The term paper is to be submitted to the Seminar Tutor. Page 3 of 8
4 5 Grading The overall grade for SWD5120 will take into account the grades for the: (a) Field practicum (b) 2 case presentations during the field seminars (c) Participation in field seminars (d) Written summary of one of the case presentations (e) Term paper Page 4 of 8
