Discover the Novanet Catalogue Introducing Novanet Searching for Books Additional Features Searching for Articles Expand Your Search Beyond Novanet Patrick Power Library September 2015
Introducing Novanet Novanet is a consortium of academic libraries in Nova Scotia which share a common online library catalogue. Your student ID card allows you to borrow materials from any Novanet library.
Searching the Library s catalogue will allow you to locate books, ebooks, full text articles, and other resources at Saint Mary s and other Novanet libraries. Novanet Classic refers to an older version of the catalogue. The classic version does not allow for article searching.
Searching for Books
To begin a search, select the Books tab and enter your keywords in the search box. endangered species Then, click Find
Your keywords Total results Limit your search results
Results will be sorted by relevance. Click the down arrow to sort by other options.
Any limiters that you have applied are displayed here. You can limit the results to items held at SMU or another Novanet library. Remove limits by clicking the x. Note: If you begin a new search, you will have to reapply any limiters. Click More options to see Saint Mary s University.
You can limit your search results to books, journal articles, audio visual materials, library location, author, date, language, and more. Select More options to view additional limiters. To limit the search by date.
Brief location and availability information. Click on Find in Library/Request to find out the book s location, call number, and status.
The call number indicates the physical location of the book on library shelves. If a book has a call number it means that the book is available in print (paper) format, as opposed to an e-book that you would view online.
If an item is not available at Saint Mary s, but is available at another Novanet library, click the Find in Library/Request tab to view the library location and status information. If the book is available at a Novanet library that is nearby, you could visit the library in person to retrieve the item - Be sure to bring your SMU ID card! Or you could have the book delivered to you for pickup at Saint Mary s.
To have the book delivered, you need to Sign in using your SMU ID barcode number and the last 4 digits of your phone number. This will bring up the Request Options. If the book s status displays In Library, the book is available to be borrowed. To initiate delivery of the book, click Hold.
If a book is not available at any Novanet library, you can still request that it be delivered to Saint Mary s by clicking on the Document Delivery & More tab. Click the Request item via Document Delivery to initiate the request. You will be prompted to sign in with your Student ID barcode number and password (i.e., last 4-digits of your phone number).
For more information about the content of a book, click on the Details tab. Here you may find subject headings, a description of the book including table of contents, publication information, and other details.
Some records will have multiple versions (e.g., various editions, paper and online copies, etc.). Here we see that Saint Mary s has a physical copy and an e-book copy of this title. Physical copy E-book copy
Click Find Online to access an e-book. The link to the book may open automatically, as shown in the example below, or you may need to click on another link. Note: If off campus, you will need to sign in with your S number and password.
Additional Features
Click on the Cite/ menu to , print, cite, or export an item to RefWorks. Clicking on Citation will automatically generate a citation (APA, MLA, Chicago) for the item. Note: Always check your citation for accuracy.
Advanced Searching Use Advanced Search to construct a more precise search. Here you can search for terms within specific fields or search several fields at once. From within Novanet, select Advanced Search.
Click the drop-down arrows to reveal other field and search options. Enter your search terms. Click Search. Refine your search with limits. For example, you can limit by resource type, language, and publication date.
For example, the following search will retrieve Al Gore s book An Inconvenient Truth. Enter your search terms. Limit search to book resources and those held by Saint Mary s.
Novanet also supports phrase searching and Boolean operators. For more information on searching, click Help and refer to the How Can I Do More with the Search Panel? instructions.
Browse Feature Browse allows you to search the catalogue like a dictionary by alphabetical or numerical order. This can be useful when you know the exact title, author s name, correct subject heading, or call number. When searching within the Novanet catalogue, select Browse.
From the drop-down menu, select the option you wish to browse by. Enter search terms.
For example, this search will find all subjects beginning with global warming. Select result to view the related records.
Searching for Articles
In addition to books, Novanet enables you to search for other resource types including journal and newspaper articles.
However, Novanet does not search all of the articles that you have access to via the Library s databases. You can sign in to increase the number of articles that you retrieve, but for comprehensive searching, you should search the individual databases on their own.
To begin a search, select the Articles tab and enter your keywords in the search box. endangered species Then, click Find
Once you are in Novanet, Sign in to discover more articles! The Library subscribes to databases that need to recognize you as an authorized user before you can retrieve certain materials. Sign in using your SMU ID barcode number and the last 4 digits of your phone number. While this may expand the number of articles you retrieve, it is not a replacement for searching the Library s databases.
Working with Results You can limit your search results to peer-reviewed journals.
Brief article record Details provides additional information about the record. Name of journal containing the article.
To get access to the full text of an article, when available, click the Find Online tab. The full text may be available in multiple databases.
If online full-text is not available, click the Document Delivery & More link. The article may be available in the library in print format or available at another library. Print copy available. If an online or print copy is unavailable at SMU, you can have the full-text article delivered to you by clicking the Document Delivery link.
You will be prompted to sign in with your Student ID barcode number and password (i.e., last 4- digits of your phone number). More information on how to obtain materials from other libraries can be found on the Library s homepage under the Borrow from Other Libraries link.
Expand Your Search Beyond Novanet
If you wish to see what materials may be available beyond the Novanet libraries, you have a couple of options: First, check Expand beyond my library. Items that are not available in Novanet may be requested through Document Delivery.
If you re still not finding what you need, try searching in WorldCat. WorldCat searches the collections and resources of thousands of libraries worldwide.
