2 Installation notes System requirements To use CineVision, you must have a compatible computer with the appropriate peripherals. For the latest list of recommended CPUs and peripherals, refer to the configuration information, accessible at: Installing CineVision This section documents how to install the CineVision software, Sentinel dongle drivers, and Sonic dongle. The included dongle must be attached to your computer when running CineVision. When launching CineVision the first time, you are prompted to activate the software by entering an Activator Code. Note: Make sure not to attach the Sonic dongle until after the CineVision software and Sentinel dongle drivers have been installed. To install the CineVision software, Sentinel dongle drivers, and dongle: 1 Insert the Sonic Installation disc and run the Setup program for the CineVision software. Follow the on-screen instructions. 2 Run the Setup program for the Sentinel dongle drivers. Follow the on-screen instructions. 3 Attach the Sonic dongle to your computer s USB port. 4 From the Windows Start menu, choose All Programs > Sonic > Scenarist Workgroup > CineVision > CineVision. 5 When prompted with the Activation dialog box, enter the Activator Code for your CineVision system. The Activator Code is case sensitive and must be entered as such. Note: If you haven t yet registered your software and received your activator code, please visit and follow the instructions. 3 What s new in CineVision 2.0? CineVision 2.0 includes the following enhancements: Digital Vision DVO mastering toolset Hollywood pedigree, Emmy-award winning mastering tools are fully integrated into CineVision 2. Look at the video processing power available: Film grain management Aperture correction Brick wall filtering These tools are even available on a segment basis! Advanced segment-based re-encoding Adjust a whole lot more than just the bit rate when you re-encode segments. Encode engine enhancements All three CineVision video codecs have undergone extensive engineering improvements to achieve even better results. New encoding parameters CineVision 2 features a variety of new tools, including black level normalization, intensity compensation (VC-1), and scalable film grain optimization (AVC). Accelerated encoding CineVision s AVC and VC-1 encoders have been further optimized to achieve the same great results in a shorter space of time. CineVision 2.0 Release Notes 6/25/07 3

4 Enhanced Timeline display A new quantization track has been added to the Timeline window, displaying maximum, average, and minimum encoder quantization levels for every frame. Audio playback support CineVision 2 can play back an audio file alongside your encoded video, enabling simultaneous QC of both video and audio streams. CineVision 2.0 Release Notes 6/25/07 4

5 Resolved issues CineVision 2.0 includes the following resolved issues: [55469] 1080i encodes in AVC no longer show unusual artifacts, such as incorrect color information on I- frames and rogue macroblocks on scrolling content (for example, credits). [53091] When you switch between takes, the application no longer hangs if the playhead is not on an I-frame. [52420] When you select a WAV file for playback in the Audio track of the Timeline window, the file now appears on the track. [45328] CineVision now supports VC-1 encodes for Blu-ray Disc in a resolution of 1440x1080. [44435] When using the Detail adaptive quantization mode positive strengths now yield a finer quantization (higher quality) on detailed areas of frames [38523] Your selections on the Tracks tab in the Timeline Display Options are now saved with the application. [37437] During preview of a VC-1 encode, the final frame is now visible. [36784] CineVision now successfully re-encodes segments that immediately follow short GOPs in the base encode, even when using a small minimum IDR interval (2 frames or fewer). [36777] VC-1 CBR encodes no longer cause CineVision to report buffer overflow errors. [36221] During VC-1 encodes, if Varispeed Playback is enabled, the playhead no longer jumps forward when you start playback. [36001] When replaying long encodes, the Timeline window no longer consumes a significant amount of system processing power, negatively impacting the video playback performance. [34212] Intermittent failures no longer occur during export of AVI files using the VC-1 codec. [33843] If a session contains the same source file more than 5 times, sections of the encode no longer come out green. [30443] When you encode a QuickTime source file with an aspect ratio of 4:3 using the AVC or MPEG encoder and an aspect ratio of 16:9, the Preview window now displays the encoded video with the correct aspect ratio. [30309] CineVision now supports a resolution of 960x1080 for VC-1 encoding. [30068] CineVision now retains the size of the Timeline window. If you minimize the Timeline window, exit CineVision, and start CineVision again, the Timeline window is still minimized. [28131] Locate A and Locate B are no longer reset after a re-encode. [27840] CineVision now plays back VC-1 encodes with to Pulldown at the correct speed. [26818] Preview of AVC re-encodes no longer display green distortion in the Preview window during the encode. [25622] If a segment s start point is the same location as another segment s end point, the segment s duration is now displayed correctly on the Segments tab of the Settings window. [24142] For AVC encodes with Pulldown frame rate conversions (such as to 29.97) and start times that are not 00:00:00:00, the embedded timecode now starts at the specified start time. 6 [23974] Segment re-encoding is now supported for encodes with Pulldown frame rate conversions. [23959] For VC-1 encodes with low bit rates, it is now possible to locate the Playhead to the last few seconds of the material. [23816] When selecting some AVI files as the source media, the Movie Preview window no longer initially displays the second frame instead of the first. [23781] The Decode During Encoding preference is now supported for VC-1 encodes, and the material will be displayed in the Movie Preview window during the encode. [23565] When encoding from a source file, you can now specify whether the material will be encoded as drop frame or non-drop frame. [23342] VBR encodes no longer yield non-compliant streams when the difference between the Target and Maximum bit rates is too small. [23340] Previewing AVC encodes with to Pulldown no longer exhibits intermittent playback problems. [23216] When previewing VC-1 encodes, nudging one frame at a time in the Movie Control window now displays the correct frame in the Preview window. [23193] When switching to another Windows program while an encode is in progress, you can now switch back to CineVision by clicking its icon in the Windows taskbar. Previously, only the Encoding progress dialog box would appear. [23176] When previewing AVC encodes with Field mode in CineVision, playback now starts at the correct frame. [22408] After adding a media file in the Input File Settings dialog box and clicking OK, so it appears in the Times List window, adding subsequent media files in the Input File Settings dialog and then clicking Cancel no longer causes the canceled media files to still appear in the Times List window. [20485] When previewing encoded material with low resolutions (such as 352 x 288 and 352 x 480), playback now occurs at the correct speed. [20185] Switching between the Windows desktop and CineVision no longer causes media source files in the Input File Settings dialog box to become hidden. CineVision 2.0 Release Notes 6/25/07 6

7 Known issues CineVision 2.0 includes the following known issues: [56776] In some cases, when you use the HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc target application with the AVC encoder, the HD DVD file created during finalize is incomplete. (The Blu-ray Disc base encode is correct.) A future release will allow successful creation of the HD DVD file. [56164] The PC on which CineVision is running must have an audio device and the related drivers installed. If an audio device is not present, the system may fail to import source files. [55954] During re-encoding of multiple takes within a segment, if a failure occurs with one take, then none of the takes will be saved. If an error occurs during re-encoding of a number of takes within a single segment, cancel the process immediately and inform Sonic support of the error encountered. [54958] If you attempt to re-encode a segment whose target average bit rate is above the stream s maximum bit rate, the re-encode fails. A target bit rate above the maximum for a segment is possible only if, in the base encode, the segment contains an average bit rate above the maximum bit rate. [54853] MPEG-2 and WMV source files are not supported in this version of CineVision. Sonic recommends that you use the following input formats: AVI, QuickTime, Planar YUV and DPX sequences. [54850] Installing the AJA QuickTime 7 codecs can cause problems with encoding from other QuickTime sources with resolutions below 720x480. This codec is installed if you run XENA_setup exe in Typical install mode. To avoid this problem, do not install that codec. [54140] The Sentinel software dongle may cause pauses in audio replay. To resolve this problem, go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs, click the Sentinel Protection Installer, and click Change. In the Sentinel installation wizard, select Modify and remove all components except for the USB system driver. [53337] The audio playback in CineVision 2.0 only supports playback of audio files for which a decoder is installed on the system. CineVision 2.0 does not install any audio decoders itself. [53081] The Digital Vision plug-ins are not currently optimized for use on multiple-core processor systems. As a result, performance is not as fast as it ultimately will be. [52476] Currently, there is no way to preview adjustments to the processing settings for a segment. The source preview in the post-encode mode always uses the processing parameters applied to the base encode. Workaround: Create another session and test different processing parameters for a particular section in the pre-encode mode. [46186] When you are using an NVidia Quadro FX graphics card with HD-SDI output for QC purposes, a small amount of the edges of the frames is not visible in the SDI signal. NVidia expects to provide updated drivers that correct this fault in the near future. [40906] Buffer underflow errors may occur with small buffer sizes. To avoid this problem, when you adjust the VBV or HRD buffer sizes manually on the codec Advanced tab, make sure that the size equals at least 0.5 seconds of video (for example, at 20Mbps make sure the buffer is at least kbits). [40016] If the target and maximum bit rate are too close together, CineVision may occasionally report buffer errors at the end of encoding. Sonic recommends that the difference between the target bit rate and the maximum bit rate be at least 30% of the target bit rate specified. CineVision 2.0 Release Notes 6/25/07 7

8 [39686, 32972] For VC-1 encodes with a target application of HD DVD Main and Blu-ray Disc Primary, CineVision supports only those resolution/frame rate/scan mode combinations that are supported by both HD DVD and Blu-ray formats. In a future release, CineVision will include support for p sources, which will be converted with pull-down frame rate conversions to 29.97fps for HD DVD. [39492] If the Decode Movie during Encoding option is selected, opening the Windows Task Manager during an encode may cause the encode process to pause and restart. If this happens, cancel the encode and start a new session. [38971] CineVision does not check free disk space before exporting an uncompressed AVI file. To avoid problems, make sure that enough disk space is available before exporting a large file. [36314] CineVision does not support deinterlaced playback. During playback of AVC or MPEG-2 interlaced encodes in CineVision, the artifacts of displaying interlaced fields as single frames are clearly visible. For correct preview, use the recommended NVidia Quadro FX graphics cards with SDI output, and feed them to an interlaced monitor. Interlaced VC-1 encodes are always deinterlaced during playback. [36313] 720x486 is not a supported input resolution for BD or HD DVD. CineVision does not currently support cropping to 720x480. [33349] When encoding from Image sequences or planar YUV files, if you adjust the encode start and end time in the source files, the Source Control panel is not updated. However, the encode will be completed using the specified start and end times. [30298] CineVision crashes during export of AVI files using the VC-1 codec, if the frame rate is 720x480 or less. [28409] With certain AVI codecs, video files cannot be imported over a network. To resolve this issue, copy the files to a local drive. [27220] When encoding from an MPEG-2 source with a specified end time, the last several frames do not appear in CineVision when previewing (though the material does get encoded). [23976] Though improved since the 1.1 release, segment re-encodes may not always achieve the desired bit rates. For best results with segment re-encodes, use longer segments. [23111] When the Movie Preview window is set to full screen, quitting and relaunching the program does not restore the window to full screen. [23000] To exit from full screen preview mode in a single-monitor system, you must use the keyboard shortcut, Ctrl+Alt+F. [22998] Full screen preview mode is available only when a source file or previously encoded session is open. [22829] When encoding from a DPX image sequence, the Start Time specified in the Times List window is ignored and the material will always be encoded from 00:00:00:00. [22301] The Locate A and Locate B buttons do not work when playing back the source (in the Source Control window) or encoded movie (in the Movie Control window) in Sync mode. [21671] High-definition AVC encoding is not supported for Blu-ray Disc Secondary Streams. For information on encoding Blu-ray Disc Secondary Streams, see the CineVision User Guide. [17988] When encoding from Planar YUV files, the associated header (.hdr) file (as created by Drastic Media Reactor) must be present in the same folder. [13847] The frame drop LED on the Source Control window is not implemented. It remains green, regardless of whether frames are being dropped. CineVision 2.0 Release Notes 6/25/07 8
