Memory Verses / Scripture References: The following is a list of potential memory verses or scripture references. For credit memorize one or know two scripture references. John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. 1John 5:13 - These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. Islamic Teachings vs. God s Truth I. Concerning Salvation A. Islamic Teachings 1. Muslims believe the Five Pillars lead to salvation. These essential practices of Islam are: i The Creed (Kalima) - The Islamic profession of faith, called the Shahada is a prerequisite to being a member of the Muslim community. This profession of faith includes the following Islamic creed, There is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is the apostle of Allah. - To be a Muslim you must sate this aloud publicly. How does this conflict with what Jesus taught in Matthew 10:32-33? ii Almsgiving (Zakat) - Muhammad himself was an orphan and desired to help the needy. The alms originally were voluntary, but all Muslims are now legally required to give 1/40 of their income for the destitute. iii Praying (Salat) - Prayers are done five times a day facing the Kaaba shrine in Mecca. A prayer is made up of a sequence of units called bowings (rak as). During each of these units, the worshiper stands, bows, kneels, and prostrates while reciting verses from the Qur an as well as other prayer formulas. iv Fasting - Observing Ramadan, faithful Muslims fast from sunup to sundown each day during their holy month. No food or drink may be consumed during the daylight hours; as well as no smoking or sexual pleasures during this month. Many Muslims will eat 2 meals a day during Ramadan: one before sunrise, and one after sunset. This year it will be observed from July 21 through August 19 th (2012). v The Pilgrimage (Hajj) - Making the pilgrimage to Mecca once during one s lifetime as physically and financially able. 2. Muslims believe these Five Pillars lead to favor with Allah. Good Muslim men will attend the mosques for prayer and sermon at noon on Fridays. 3. There is no assurance of forgiveness or salvation in Islam. Muslims believe that on the Day of Judgment, Allah will weigh their good and bad deeds. If the good outweighs the

2 Student Copy w/answers Lesson 5 Islam - Part 3-2- bad, they will be allowed into Paradise. If the bad outweighs the good, the decision is up to Allah. Surah 7:7 - The weighing on that day, with justice, and they whose balances shall be heavy, these are they who shall be happy. And they whose balances shall be light have lost their souls. i Muhammad himself did not know his eternal destiny for sure. Surah 5:266 By Allah, though I am the Apostle of Allah, yet I do not know what Allah will do to me. 4. Islamic Jihad i The word Jihad literally means "to struggle," and to some modern-day Muslims it is simply a "struggle with self." History, as well as the Quran proves, however, that Jihad most commonly is understood to mean the holy war waged by the Muslim people throughout the ages, in order to reform the earth against those who reject Islamic law. All true Muslims believe in Jihad and pursue it to some extent or another. Early Muslims believed it was their sacred duty to murder anyone who would not embrace the one true faith; but contemporary Islam is much more moderate. ii The methods of Jihad are varied however. Some Muslims might attempt economic Jihad, others spiritual. But to many fundamentalists, the Muslims who take the Quran seriously and literally, spilling the blood of infidels (all who reject Allah) is true Jihad. The power behind this type of Jihad is promised rewards because anyone who gives his life in a Holy war, or Jihad, is guaranteed admittance to Paradise. Since their struggle is to gain acceptance from Allah, Jihad to many Muslims is the only sure way of that acceptance. Jihad for many is an act of desperation; they ultimately are trying to attain salvation. According to David Hunt, "The only sure way in Islam of achieving Paradise is to sacrifice one s life in Jihad. Yes, suicide is forbidden as self-murder. But to sacrifice one s life in killing infidels carries the highest reward. (you are the martyr ) And what reward does Paradise bring to the Jihad martyr? He is promised a palace of pearls in which are 70 mansions; inside each mansion are 70 houses and in each house a bed on which are 70 sheets and on each sheet a beautiful virgin. He is assured that he will have the appetite and strength of 100 men for food and sex. This fantastic dream is fed to Muslim boys from earliest childhood." (These teachings are found in the Hadith (tradition), which they hold as truth). iii But does the Quran support the use of the sword in the spread of Islam? A strong case can be made in the affirmative since over one hundred verses command the Muslims to use violence to spread their faith. Following are some examples; the Hadith : Surah 8:12 Remember Thy Lord inspired the angels (with the message): "I am with you: give firmness to believers: I will instill terror into the hearts of the unbelievers: smite ye above their necks and smite all their fingertips off them." Surah 9:5 Fight and slay the Pagans wherever ye find them, and seize them, beleaguer them (harass), and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war); but if they repent, and establish regular prayers and practice regular

3 Student Copy w/answers Lesson 5 Islam - Part 3-3- charity, then open the way for them: for Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful. (This is called "The verse of the Sword.") Surah 8:68 It is not for any prophet to have prisoners until he has made wide slaughter in the land. Surah 5:33 Those who make war against Allah and his apostle and spread disorders in the land shall be put to death or crucified or have their hands and feet cut off on alternate sides, or be banished from the country. 5. There are 2 main schools of Islam, the Sunnis and the Shi ite. The Sunnis outnumber the Shi ite 9 to 1 in most Middle Eastern countries. The importance with that is the Sunnis practice a moderate form of Islam whereas the Shi ite school takes the Quran much more literal and is a much more militant group than the Sunnis. Interestingly 95 % of Iran s Muslims are Shi ites and today Iran is a Shi ite Islamic republic. Shi ites are also very strong in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. B. God s Truth 1. Muslims have a works based salvation as they teach your good works are weighed against your bad works. How does this works based salvation differ from the Bible s message? Can man be good enough or work their way to heaven? ; give supporting verses: Eph. 2;8-9; Titus 3:5 2. The Bible also clearly teaches that God has given us the assurance of salvation; name a verse supporting this: i What do you learn from 1John 5:13? ii What do you learn from John 10: Muslims teach that Muhammad was greater than Christ; yet Muhammad was not sure exactly what was going to happen after his death. How does this differ from Christ according to: Mark 14:61-62 compared to Mark 16:19 John 13:3, - Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God ; John 16:28 I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father. John 17:11 And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are. John 17:13 And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves. Islamic Eschatology (study of end time events) Islam is a religion that has become a counterfeit to Christianity. Satan has always desired to deceive people and the best way he can do that is to get as close to the truth as he can ( And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. 2Cor. 11:14). Islam believes in a historical figure called Jesus and he plays a critical role in their end time events. Again they get their truth from the Quran as well as the Hadith (their traditions; this is like the Catholics whose theology comes from the Bible and tradition as well as in Judaism where they get their truth from the Old Testament and rabbinic tradition).

4 Student Copy w/answers Lesson 5 Islam - Part 3-4- In Islam, Jesus was a man who was not God. They do not believe He died, but rather went to heaven like Elijah did. Because He did not die, He did not resurrect and therefore did not pay the price for man s sins. They believe He is a prophet and is currently alongside Allah, waiting for Allah to send him back. Why will Allah send Jesus back? To correct all the Christians who have misunderstood who He really is. After He corrects all the misguided Christians He will get married, have children and die and be buried next to Mohammed. In Islamic Eschatology there are 3 men who play the greatest roles in their end time events. 1. The first man that will come in the end of history is one they call the Mahdi. He is also known as the twelfth Imam. Iran s president, Ahmadinejad always gives glory to the Mahdi every time he gives a speech as he is waiting for the coming of the Mahdi. a. His purpose in coming is to slaughter all those who do not convert to Islam and worship Allah and to establish the everlasting world kingdom of Islam. He will have an army that will carry black flags and on those flags there will be one word, punishment. The Iranian army today carries black flags in anticipation of his return. b. He will slaughter the Jews and establish his rule on the Temple mount. c. The Mahdi will bring economic prosperity. He will set up a peace agreement with the Jews and with the west for 7 years at which time he will establish Islam in the world. d. Their writings say that the Mahdi will come riding on a white horse. i. Revelation 6:1-2 And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see. And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer. (Note: Saddam Hussein, by the way, painted murals of this Mahdi on a white horse all over Baghdad.) ii. Joel Rosenberg, former aide to Benjamin Netanyahu (Israel s Prime Minister), put it last year: In order to bring about this Islamic messiah, the Mahdi, the Twelfth Imam, Islamic leaders need to hasten his coming by destroying little Satan, Israel, and the great Satan, the United States. The leaders actually believe they need to create bloody carnage, the death of millions of people in order to create the conditions for the Mahdi to bring peace. e. The Islamic Mahdi will be a messianic figure who is a descendant of Mohammed. He will be an unparalleled, unequaled leader. He will come out of a crisis of turmoil. He will take control of the world. He will establish a new world order. He will destroy all who resist him. He will invade many nations. He will make a seven-year peace treaty with the Jews. He will conquer Israel and massacre the Jews. He will establish Islamic world headquarters at Jerusalem. He will rule for seven years, establish Islam as the only religion. He will come on a white horse with supernatural power. He will be loved by all people on earth. f. That is the exact biblical description the Antichrist! The Bible s antichrist is the Muslim Mahdi and Savior. 2. The Second person is Islamic Eschatology is Jesus. The Mahdi is not Jesus, but is greater than Jesus. They say Jesus returns as a radical Muslim to aid the Mahdi. He will come back holding the wings of two angels who flew him down to meet the gathering army of the Mahdi in the east, the army of the black flags. Their Jesus will come back and pray to the Mahdi

He will make a pilgrimage to Mecca and worship Allah and lead all Christians who follow him out of their deception into his truth. Their literature says, He will shatter crosses which speaks of the destruction of the church. He will also kill the Islamic Antichrist. a. This second person is an exact duplicate of the false prophet of Revelation 13, 16, 19, and 20 who aids the Antichrist. The Mahdi is the Biblical antichrist, and their Jesus is the Biblical False Prophet. 3. The third person is the Dijjal ; this is the great deceiver. They say he comes to earth on a mule and is blind in one of his eyes and is the Antichrist. This Dijjal they say will claim to be Jesus and will claim to be God. He will attempt to stop the Mahdi and the true Jesus but the Muslim Jesus will kill the counterfeit (Christian) Jesus. So the Christian Jesus is the Muslim Antichrist and the Muslim Jesus is our Antichrist. This is a satanic counterfeit that is a complete reversal of the Bible. Their literature reads, The army of Satan will be led by a person who will claim to be Jesus Christ. There will be a battle. The Muslim Jesus will fight the false Jesus and kill him and establish Islam forever. The truth is, the true Jesus will destroy the Antichrist and the false prophet and establish His Kingdom forever. This is Satan s complete counterfeit. o Jesus said, For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.and many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.for there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. (Matt. 24:5,11,24) Summary Islam rejects the key doctrines of the Christian faith, the Trinity, the deity of Christ, the crucifixion and resurrection, the sin nature of man and his salvation by grace alone through faith in Christ, and Christian eschatology. They also reject the Bible as the only authoritative book to base all matters of doctrine, faith and practice. When Islam rejects the truth of the written Word of God, they are left not only different from Christianity, but opposite from Christianity. Islam was founded by a dead prophet; Christianity was founded by a risen Savior. Their founder was defeated by death, Christian s founder took death in His own hands and destroyed it and one day will cast death and Hell into the Lake of Fire (Rev. 20:14)! The Christian Jesus will return one day and every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that He alone is Lord (Phil. 2:8-10)!
