4 Celebrating our commitment to environmental stewardship. While we ve been cruising the Galapagos Islands for the past ten years, we are like you merely visitors, and we are cognizant of the fact that, in order to maintain these islands for future generations to enjoy, it s incumbent upon us to do whatever we can 2 to practice responsible environmental stewardship. We ve led the effort to create a fishing cooperative so that local fisherman have a safe, clean processing plant in which to prepare and store their catches. Today, Celebrity Xpedition serves the fresh, locally sourced daily catch from this group of fishermen on board. We ve constructed greenhouses and provided additional support for local farmers associations through organic agriculture initiatives. Through this, we ve helped support the creation of the Galapagos tomato, which is served to guests on Celebrity Xpedition, along with other organic, locally sourced produce grown through this program. A partnership with a local nongovernmental organization led to the construction of an ecological trail and interpretive center in the Santa Cruz highlands; Celebrity Xpedition s guests can visit this site and learn about the unique characteristics of the topography and ecosystem in the area as part of the shore excursions included in the cruise experience. With the creation of The Galapagos Fund, we give our guests sailing on Celebrity Xpedition the opportunity to have a direct, positive, and lasting impact on the preservation of the rare and species-rich marine, wildlife, and plant ecosystems of the Galapagos Islands. Various projects are supported each year through a grant application and review process managed by The Galapagos Conservancy. It is through conservation and sustainability-focused community initiatives like these, both large and small, that the natural, wonder-inspiring beauty of the Galapagos Islands A SOUVENIR THAT STAYS Most people want a memento to remind them of where they ve been. Celebrity, in collaboration with the Galapagos National Park and our Naturalists, is giving you the chance to not just help the Islands but also provide you with a memento that is truly one-of-a-kind. As part of our commitment to the environment, you can be part of the Scalesia Reforestation Project. The Scalesia is an endemic tree that has lost much of its habitat in the Galapagos. The absence of large concentrations of these trees is adversely impacting the animals that call the forest home. During your visit to Santa Cruz Island, you ll have the opportunity to plant a Scalesia tree, not only helping to save this vital island flora and its habitat, but minimizing the carbon footprint of your visit to the Islands. Our goal is to plant over 5,000 trees. can be preserved. Low-impact travel. As part of our desire to preserve these islands for future generations, the entire cruise has been optimized to practice the highest levels of environmental stewardship. Even our ship, Celebrity Xpedition, has received a Smart Voyager Certification a sustainable tourism certification program, meaning that it complies with the standards set by the Sustainable Tourism Network for wildlife conservation, water protection, and the well-being of workers and local communities. The hull of the ship is painted with silicone to move through the water more efficiently, thereby using less fuel and further reducing her carbon footprint. Even the chocolates on the pillows at nightly turndown are purchased from a local, eco-friendly chocolate company that donates part of its proceeds to Galapagos conservation efforts. 5 Tap into our knowledge. There is a difference between being familiar with a place and knowing a place. Our naturalist guides fall into the latter category. They are, quite simply, some of the best in the Galapagos, 3 with degrees ranging from science to tourism. They possess years of practical experience gained from time spent on the islands and, for some, from being raised in the region. Not only will you learn all there is to know about the islands from an ecologic and geologic perspective but also, and perhaps even more interestingly, what it s like to grow up in such a special place. Certified Guides Each guide on our Galapagos sailings has been certified by the Galapagos National Park. This certification recognizes the extensive educational training they ve undergone, as well as the commitment they ve made to maintain the pristine nature of these islands. Celebrity Cruises is an active partner in this effort, observing a strict set of environmental guidelines that help to ensure the ecological integrity of the islands. Access to the experts With a guest-to-naturalist ratio of 6:, you ll have ample opportunity to interact with our guides and learn more about the historical and natural nuances of this archipelago, which promises to make your Galapagos adventure a deeply personal experience. MEET SCIENCE ADVISOR DR. ELLEN PRAGER What you see in the Galapagos seems like what nature was before humans impacted the world, says noted marine and earth scientist and author Dr. Ellen Prager. As the science advisor to Celebrity Xpedition, Dr. Prager assists with onboard programming and content, naturalist training, conservation efforts, and excursion planning. As a passionate defender of the Islands, it is Dr. Prager s goal that Celebrity guests experience the islands as richly and responsibly as possible. You get to see firsthand and close-up animals that have no fear of humans, explains Dr. Prager. The wildlife exhibit amazing behaviors right in front of the guests amid untouched and wondrous landscapes. It is a wholly unique place. And that uniqueness, says Dr. Prager, is not limited solely to land. Because of the unusual mix of warm and cold water species in the Islands, you ll see things in the ocean here you won t see anywhere else, like tropical fish swimming beside a penguin. I ll put it this way, if you like wildlife and nature, you need to visit the Galapagos at least once in your life Knowledgeable guides 2. Friendly and personal experiences 3. Lunch with a spectacular view of the city, and enjoy a welcome dinner at a local gourmet restaurant. CRUISE BEGINS Depart Baltra Island, Galapagos Sunday AM Baltra Island During World War II, Baltra served as a U.S. military base protecting the Panama Canal from enemy attack. Now the cactus-strewn landscapes of Baltra are home to the region s main airport and where you will meet the ship. After just a short bus and Zodiac ride you will be aboard. Your luggage will be delivered straight to your stateroom, giving you the opportunity to explore the Celebrity Xpedition, a 296-foot mega-yacht and your home for the week. Sunday PM Daphne Island Daphne is a satellite volcanic cone located north of Santa Cruz Island. The crater floor is an important breeding site for blue-footed boobies. This island is famous for the scientific investigation led by Peter and Rosemary Grant on the finches population, one of the most important studies on the field that supports Charles Darwin s theory. The cliff shore of the island is home for sea lions, pelicans, blue-footed boobies, and tropical birds. In addition, large schools of fish can be observed from the Zodiac rides. Monday AM Gardner Bay, Española Island A long white sand beach and clear blue waters make this an ideal spot for swimming, snorkeling, or just relaxing on the beach. In the water, sea turtles, rays, colorful tropical fish, and maybe even a white-tip reef shark may be seen. It is also home to a colony of sea lions. Excursion options include beach walking, swimming, or a deepwater snorkel for experienced snorkelers. Monday PM Suarez Point, Española Island Española is the oldest island in the Galapagos and home to an abundance of wildlife. At this site, visitors can expect to see sea lions, Galapagos hawks, marine iguanas, and both blue-footed and Nazca boobies. And between late March and the following January, the Waved albatrosses come here to mate and raise their young. Excursion options include a long, rocky walk to look for albatrosses and observe an impressive blowhole that spews water like a towering geyser. Tuesday AM Cormorant Point, Floreana Island Floreana was the first capital of the Galapagos and where Charles Darwin met the islands Governor. Its small brackish lagoon is often home to flamingos, stilts, and whitecheeked pintail ducks, and one of its beaches is a highly used nesting site for sea turtles. Check out the greenhued sand where you land! Excursion options include a relatively short walk to the lagoon and sea turtlenesting beach, and optional snorkeling and swimming at the landing beach. In addition, for experienced snorkelers only we offer a deepwater snorkel at nearby Champion Island. Tuesday PM Post Office Bay, Floreana Island Rich in history, this site is home to the post office barrel established in about 793 where whalers and others could leave their mail to be picked up by outbound ships. Continue the tradition and during our short visit post your own letter or postcards at this early mail stop. Wednesday AM Moreno Point, Isabela Island Along this beautiful rocky shore, a field of hardened black lava flows is pockmarked by shallow pools, which are home to shorebirds and flamingos. The mangrove-lined shore also provides a chance to see marine iguanas, sea turtles, stingrays, sharks, penguins, and the flightless cormorant. Excursion options include a long walk and Zodiac ride, or an extended Zodiac ride. Wednesday PM Urvina Bay, Isabela Island Composed of five coalesced volcanoes, this is the largest island in the Galapagos and the most recently active, the latest eruption having occurred in Here we will see large land iguanas, finches, and if lucky, a giant tortoise or two. In 954, the intrusion of magma below one of the island s volcanoes caused part of the bay to be uplifted some 6 meters, and today we can walk through the remains of what was once a thriving underwater reef. Excursion options include a long, faster-paced hike with some rock climbing required, followed by an optional snorkel (if conditions allow), or a short walk and optional snorkel. Thursday AM Espinoza Point, Fernandina Island Fernandina is the youngest island in the Galapagos and, as Darwin wrote, it is covered with immense deluges of black naked lava. Along with its extraordinary black lava rocks, this point of land hosts the largest colony of marine iguanas in the Archipelago, along with sea lions and a nesting site for flightless cormorants. Excursion options here include a long walk or short walk, as well as a deepwater snorkel for experienced snorkelers. Thursday PM Vicente Roca Point, Isabela Island The half-collapsed remains of an ancient volcano make for a spectacular setting at this site. Awe-inspiring cliffs, blue waters, and wildlife create a Zodiac ride to remember as we search for sea turtles, penguins, fur seals, the flightless cormorant, marine iguanas, marine mammals, and the oddly shaped form of the elusive sunfish. Friday AM South Plaza, Santa Cruz Island One of two twin islands off Santa Cruz, South Plaza was born of upheaval, uplifted during a geologic event. The rocky island is strewn with prickly pear cactus and home to land iguanas, marine iguanas, and a colony of sea lions. Our excursion here is a short walk to view wildlife, flora, and geology. Friday PM Dragon Hill, Santa Cruz Island Dragon Hill, or Cerro Dragon, is named after its population of land iguanas. The site offers a beautiful view of the landscape and two small brackish lagoons where flamingos and other shore birds occasionally feed. Along the trail, we ll cross a beautiful white forest of Palo Santo (incense) trees and Galapagos cotton plants. Options for this visit include a long walk and a short walk. Saturday All Day Puerto Ayora, Santa Cruz Island This is the main population center of the islands and home to the National Park Service tortoise-breeding center and the Charles Darwin Research Station. You will be able to visit the tortoise-breeding center and walk through the Charles Darwin Research Station. You will also have the opportunity to take a bus ride to the Highlands to observe giant tortoises in the wild and walk through a lava tunnel. There will also be free time available for shopping. CRUISE DEBARKATION Sunday AM Baltra Island You will return to Baltra to say farewell to the enchanted islands. A Celebrity Cruises representative will greet you at the airport for your flight to your post-cruise Quito experience. Your luggage will be transferred from the ship directly to the plane. Your flight departs the Galapagos giving you one last glimpse of the world s most treasured archipelago. POST-CRUISE QUITO Days 0- Sunday Afternoon & Monday Quito, Ecuador Upon your arrival in Quito, a Celebrity Cruises representative will escort you to your hotel. Enjoy an optional afternoon excursion to the local craft market, time permitting. Dinner is served at the hotel. The cliff shore of the island is home for sea lions, pelicans, blue-footed boobies, and tropical birds. In addition, large schools of fish can be observed from the Zodiac rides. Monday AM Egas Port, Santiago Island With its sandy beach and black-rock, blue-water grottos this stop offers a taste of Galapagos geology, some great snorkeling, and an opportunity to see shore birds and Galapagos fur seals. Excursion options include a long walk along the shore to the grottos to see fur seals, followed by optional swimming and snorkeling or a shorter coastal walk. Monday PM Rabida Island A small island south of Santiago, Rabida is best known for its red sand and eroded volcanic landscape. A nesting colony of pelicans makes its home here, along with sea lions and some seabirds. Excursion options include a Zodiac ride and short walk, swimming, and snorkeling from the beach. Tuesday AM Elizabeth Bay, Isabela Island Elizabeth Bay is one of the westernmost points in the Galapagos. A scenic Zodiac ride along this sheltered inlet offers viewing of a wide variety of wildlife and a wonderful mangrove ecosystem. Tuesday PM Tagus Cove, Isabela Island Historically an anchorage for pirates and whalers, this site offers a breathtaking view of Isabela, its volcanoes, and a saltwater lagoon. Along the shore seabirds, penguins, sea lions, sea turtles, and nesting flightless cormorants can often be found. Excursion options include a scenic Zodiac ride for wildlife viewing, a long, faster-paced walk, and optional snorkeling. Wednesday AM Sullivan Bay, Santiago Island During a volcanic eruption in the early 900 s, this area of Santiago was covered with flowing lava. Today, the hardened fields of black rock create a geologic wonderland. We will take advantage of the cool of the early morning for a walk at this amazing site. Wednesday PM Bartolomé Island Bartolomé Island hosts one of the region s most often photographed views and a spectacular geologic setting. Its barren moon-like volcanic landscapes, spatter cones, and pinnacle rock make for a unique stop. It is also home to the endemic Galapagos penguin and provides an excellent opportunity for snorkeling. Excursion options include a hike up some 368 stairs To the Top of the volcano, a Zodiac ride, and an optional beach swim or snorkel. Thursday AM Las Bachas, Santa Cruz Island This is one of the most beautiful white sand beaches in all of the Galapagos, and behind it are two small ponds that often have flamingos feeding in the shallows. It is also one of the largest nesting areas for the Pacific green sea turtle. Excursion options include a short beach walk to look for flamingos, followed by an optional opportunity to swim, snorkel, or just relax on the shore. It is also possible to simply go to the beach to swim, snorkel, and relax. Deep water snorkel for experienced snorkelers. Thursday PM North Seymour Island North Seymour is a small island just north of Baltra. It is home to the largest colony of frigate birds in the Galapagos. While keeping an eye out for male frigates trying to impress potential mates with an inflated red neck pouch, you may also see blue-footed boobies dancing in a timeless courtship ritual. Sea lions and large land iguanas also roam about this rocky terrain. Excursion options include a guided long, rocky walk, Zodiac ride and short easy walk, or simply a scenic Zodiac tour along the coast to view wildlife and the geology of the area. Experienced snorkelers will also have an option to do a deepwater snorkel at this site. Friday AM Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, San Cristobal Island Here we have the opportunity to visit the small waterfront town of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, the administrative capital of the islands. Excursion options include a tour of a local interpretation center and time for shopping or a fast-paced long walk to view scenic vistas, followed by a visit to the interpretation center Friday PM Warlock Hill (Cerro Brujo) and Kicker Rock, San Cristobal Island White sand juxtaposed with black volcanic rocks make this beach another of the Galapagos s most spectacular. Along the shore are seabirds and sea lions. Excursion options include a Zodiac ride and beach walk with optional swimming. Afterwards, just in time for a sunset cocktail, the ship will navigate around the steep, richly colored walls of Kicker Rock, the spectacular remains of a satellite volcanic cone. 12 Packing for adventure. What does one pack when one is visiting some of the most unique, unspoiled islands in the world? Surprisingly, many of the same things you would take with you to visit any foreign destination. However, when deciding what to pack, we suggest keeping one word 9 in mind: practicality. ESSENTIAL TRAVEL DOCUMENTS DAYTIME AND SHORE EXCURSIONS Neutral-colored clothing is advised due to possible presence of insects. Lightweight rain jacket or windbreaker. A small backpack to carry water and other essentials. A hat, sunglasses, sunblock, and insect repellent. A resealable plastic bag to prevent water damage to cameras and other items of that nature. If you bring a digital camera, make sure to pack plenty of memory cards. The weather in these ports of call can be unpredictable, so we recommend layers. During the warmer months (February through June) it can be very hot on shore excursions. Lightweight shorts and pants as well as both long- and short-sleeve shirts. A jacket or sweatshirt will come in handy for cooler days and evenings. Sturdy, comfortable walking shoes or lightweight hiking boots, thick socks, swimsuit, and waterproof sandals or wet/dry water shoes for the beach and wet landings. Some of the island trails require walking on rocks, so be sure to have support and good tread on walking shoes. A valid passport is required for international travel. When traveling on Celebrity Xpedition, Ecuadorian law requires that your passport be valid for at least six months. Also, please be sure to check the visa requirements for each country on your itinerary. See pages 30-3 for passport information or visit celebritycruises.com/documentation. EVENING As you pack evening clothes, remember that on Celebrity Xpedition there is no need for formal attire. For women, we recommend pants and skirts, or even casual dresses. For men, we recommend comfortable shirts and pants, along with a sweater or light jacket. Your Cruise Documents are essential to board your ship, as well as your Guest Embarkation Forms, which can be filled out online at celebritycruises.com/onlinecheckin. Ultimately, we advise you to take whatever clothing, shoes, and supplies will allow you to focus your time and attention on what matters most: immersing yourself in the beauty and history of the Galapagos Islands Sightseeing 2. Dressed for adventure 3. Zodiacs at the ready 4. Small group aboard a Zodiac excursion 5. Snorkeling 6. Relaxing with friends at the bar 7. Kicker Rock 8. A day at the beach 9.
