1 Conclusions of the seminar/workshop Identifying of main threats of threatened limnophilous freshwater fish in the Danube basin Prešov, Juraj Hajdú UMBRA Association Introduction Our workshop held within the Visegrad fund project Identifying of main threats of threatened limnophilous freshwater fish in Danube basin, took place in December at the University of Prešov, Faculty of Humanities and Sciences, Department of Ecology (fhpv.unipo.sk). The main objective of the seminar was to share the knowledge on the main threats of the endangered limnophilous fish species native to the Danube river basin (Pontocaspian biogeographical region). The aim of our project was to contribute to the determination of main causes of the threats of decrescent populations of the autochthonous limnophilous fish species native to the Danube river basin. Main topics of the seminar were as follows: 1) environmental, biological and human impacts to the limnophilous fish populations, 2) biology, ecology and behaviour of the limnophilous species, 3) conservation and management of the limnophilous fish species populations. species were presented, that started off Juraj Hajdú (University of Prešov, Department of ecology). Iulia Kutsokon (Schmalhausen Institute of Zoology, NAS of Ukraine, Kyjev) has presented her lecture dealing with the threats and perspectives of the crucian carp (Carassius carassius) population protection within the Dnieper river basin (Ukraine). Conclusions The workshop opened doc. PaedDr. Ján Koščo, CSc., university professor from the University of Prešov, who is one of the leading Slovak scientists in the field of fish ecology and ichthyology. Within the first session of the seminar, presentations dealing with the issue of conservational management of threatened limnophilous Iulia Kutsokon (Schmalhausen Institute of Zoology, NAS, Ukraine, Kyjev). Fedir Kurtyak (Uzhorod National University, Uzgorod, Ukraine) presented about the rarity categories and the protection principles of the fish fauna of the Tisza river within Transcarpathia region. 1

2 Olga Kushniryk (Chernivtsi National University, Chernivtsi, Ukraine) held the presentation dealing with the limnophilous fish species in the foothill areas of the Prut River. Institute, Tihany, Hungary) gave a detailed information regarding the recent distribution pattern and population genetic features of the European mudminnow in Hungary. Olga Kushniryk (Chernivtsi National University, Ukraine). Takács Péter (Balaton Limnological Institute, Tihany, Hungary). The second session of the workshop lectures started off with the presentation of Bajomi Bálint (Eötvös Lóránd University, Budapest, Hungary), that dealt with the restoration of the European mudminnow population in Hungary. Ferincz Árpád (Department of Limnology, University of Pannonia, Veszprém, Hungary) presented his resuslts reached by the scalemorphometric examinations on the European mudminnow (Umbra krameri Walbaum, 1792) in the Balaton lake catchment (Hungary). Müller Tamás (University of Szent István, Department of Aquaculture, Gödöllő, Hungary). Ferincz Árpád (Dpt. Of Limnology, University of Pannonia, Veszprém, Hungary). Takács Péter (Hungarian Academy of Sciences CER, Balaton Limnological Tamás Müller s contribution (University of Szent István, Department of Aquaculture, Gödöllő, Hungary) dealt with the observations on the captive breeding of the European mudminnow, contaning the information on the other limnophilous freswater fish species, such as crucian carp (Carassius carassius), weatherfish (Misgurnus fossilis) or the endemic Petzea rudd (Scardinius racovitzai). Afternoon session of lectures started off Ladislav Pekárik from the Institute of Zoology, Slovak Academy of Sciences, Bratislava, Slovakia, with his lecture 2

3 dealing with the key habitat characteristics of the threatened European mudminnow. shared his knowledge from the diet analysis of invasive goby species in Slovakia. Altogether 12 experts from three countries (HU, UA, SK) and 12 institutions throughout the Visegrad region presented their contributions issuing the biology, ecology and conservation of the targeted limnophilous species, with the outputs to the practical nature conservation and management. Experts and scientists from the following institutions took the part of the seminar: Ladislav Pekárik (Slovak Academy of Sciences, Bratislava, Slovakia). Lenka Kosuthová (University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy, Košice, Slovakia) brought an comprehensive overview regarding the invasive fish species and the fish parasites in the Tisa River basin and their impact on the affected fish communities. Lenka Kosuthová (University of Veterinary Medicine, Košice, Slovakia). Branislav Hrabkovský (University of Prešov, Faculty of Humanities and Sciences, Department of Ecology, Slovakia) presented his study on the diet overlap between the European perch Perca fluviatilis (Linnaeus, 1758) and the Pumpkinseed Lepomis gibbosus (Linnaeus, 1758) in the Eastern Slovakian waters. Radoslav Smoľak from the same University Schmalhausen Institute of Zoology, NAS of Ukraine, Kyjev, Ukraine Uzgorod National University, Uzgorod, Ukraine Chernivtsi National University, Ukraine Eötvös Lóránd University, Budapest, Hungary Department of Limnology, University of Pannonia, Veszprém, Hungary Hungarian Academy of Sciences CER Balaton Limnological Institute, Tihany, Hungary University of Szent István, Department of Aquaculture, Gödöllő, Hungary Tavirózsa Association for Environmental Protection and Nature Conservation, Hungary Institute of Zoology, Slovak Academy of sciences, Bratislava, Slovakia University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy in Košice, Slovakia University of Prešov, Department of Ecology, Prešov, Slovakia. Recommendations The contributions of experts participating in the seminar have dealt mainly with the issues of conservation biology, ecology, restoration ecology, morphometry, faunistical research and phylogenetics. The following recommendations can be deduced from the seminar: 3

4 monitoring and assessment of the impact of anthropogenic, environmental and biological factors affecting the target limnophilous fish species populations is needed, a further research on the effects of non-native species on the indigenous ones is needed in order to fully understand their impact on the freshwater ecosystems, a further study of the effects of habitat fragmentation with its potential impact on the genetical background of the native limnophilous fish populations is needed, restoration of the natural and creation of artificial (seminatural) replacement habitats is needed to maintain the populations of the native limnophilous species, artificial breeding of the target species and their restitution to suitable natural and seminatural habitats is required, extension of international cooperation between experts and adoption of the common approach by the research and conservation of limnophilous species populations is required.
