1 N E W F R A N K L I N E L E M E N T A R Y S C H O O L October Bulldog Bulletin September 30, 2015 A Very Busy Month... The last day of first quarter is Friday, October 16. Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held on Thursday, October 22, from 1:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. School will dismiss that day at 12:12 p.m. SCHOOL WILL NOT BE IN SESSION ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23. Your child s teacher will be getting in touch with you to either make an appointment or confirm your existing one. It is VERY IMPORTANT to conference with the teacher after the completion of the first quarter of the school year Some field trips are scheduled for the month of October. They are: Kindergarten on October 12, first grade on Oct. 8, second grade on Oct. 16, third grade on October 7, and fourth grade on October 29. (Fifth graders will be going to the Shriner s Circus on November 13.) Please remember that field trips are an extension of school. School rules apply during field trips. We ask that adults refrain from smoking during the field trip. We have a tobacco-free policy that applies to school-sponsored activities as well. Fire Prevention Week will be observed during the week of October Some of the younger students will be touring a fire truck in our circle drive and participating in an assembly presented by fire fighters one day during the week. A schoolwide fire drill will be held on October 7, as well. Counselor s Corner The school year is off to a great start in the counseling office. I have really enjoyed getting to know all of your kids this past month. In the month of September we have been focusing on respect. We have focused on respect at home, at school, how to respect adults, our friends, and ourselves. We will continue focusing on respecting one another throughout the school year as well! In October we will be focusing on Bully Prevention Week, since the month of October is Anti-Bullying month. We will be focusing a lot on being kind and caring to each other in and out of school. The week of October 5th the kids will be focusing on random acts of kindness. The week of October 12 I will be encouraging the students to play with someone new at recess, and the week of October 19 I will be encouraging the students to stick up for others who are being bullied. October 5 is National Bully Prevention Day. I ask that all students wear blue on October 5 to solidify ourselves as being bully free. Red Ribbon Week is October 26-30, and the theme this year is Respect Yourself. Be Drug Free. We will be celebrating all week long by dressing up each day. MONDAY, the 26th, is I m Too Bright for Drugs - wear bright clothing. TUESDAY, the 27th, is Don t Get Mixed Up in Drugs - wear mismatched clothing. WEDNESDAY, the 28th, is Pride Day AND I m Jean-ious Because I m Drug Free wear bulldog shirts and jeans. Thursday, the 29th, is Team Up Against Drugs - wear your favorite team s shirt or jersey. Lastly, Friday, the 30th, is Red Day - wear as much red as possible. Hadley Rapp, Elementary Counselor Halloween Parade and Parties On Friday, October 30, students will parade downtown in costume, leaving the building at approximately 1:00 p.m. Parents arriving early will be asked to meet in the foyer and will be dismissed to classrooms around 12:50. Classroom parties will follow the costume parade downtown. Please remember the following guidelines in helping to choose your child s costume, as Halloween can create unique problems. Children may NOT wear costumes to school the day of the party. They should bring costumes that can easily be put on over clothes without help. No costumes will be allowed that depict violence or weapons (no blood or gore). NO MAKE-UP or HAIR COLOR WILL BE ALLOWED. We appreciate your cooperation in this matter.

2 School and Extracurricular Parking Parents and guests should park in the elementary and high school lots during designated times. If you plan to attend an all-day activity, please park in the high school lot. Parents are asked to refrain from parking in the lots adjoining school property. What s Going on in Art?!! Hello! Greetings from the Art Room! I am so excited to be the new art teacher here at New Franklin Elementary. We are starting the year off with superhero effort. The first few weeks of school we did a superhero unit and introduced/reviewed our color wheel (primary and secondary colors). Then everyone took a look at line and pattern! The older grades used this knowledge and created hand designs and chameleons! Our younger students also created spectacular chameleons and line-windsocks! We are currently looking at still-lifes, learning about artists like Mary Cassatt, Paul Cezanne, Vincent Van Gogh, and Pablo Picasso. This is an awesome school with kind and talented students! Thank you for encouraging your students to be creative! From the Media Center Stephanie Moore, Elementary Art The Fall Book Fair is coming November 2-7! The Library will host the fifth annual Donuts with Dads event on the morning of Monday, November 2, at 7:00 a.m. In addition to daily shopping hours during the week, the Book Fair will be open the evenings of Wednesday, November 4, for Title I Reading Night, and Saturday, November 7, for the Pig Out! If you are interested in volunteering to help with the Book Fair, please let me know! Your help would be greatly appreciated. I enjoy seeing your children in the library, and I m looking forward to another great year! If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me. Patty Yocum, Library Media Specialist McTeacher Night New Franklin Elementary School will be hosting McTeacher s Night on Tuesday, October 6, from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at the Boonville McDonald s. Please come out and join us for dinner to support New Franklin Elementary School! NEW FRANKLIN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WILL BE PARTICIPATING IN WALK OR RIDE YOUR BIKE TO SCHOOL DAY ON WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 7! More information will come home later about non-bus riding students meeting police officers and New Franklin Elementary staff downtown in front of Exchange Bank between 7:00 and 7:15 a.m. and walking to school together. We hope to have a lot of students joining us!

3 ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL PROCEDURES: As we continue to make student safety our priority, as well as try to keep traffic flowing smoothly through the circle drive, we ask that you please follow the guidelines listed below. Please do not have your children arrive at school before 7:45 a.m. as there is no supervision for them out in front of the building at that time. Students arrival before that time tends to create discipline issues which carry over into the school day. If your child is arriving late to class (after 8:05 a.m.), as a safety measure we ask that you please accompany him/her in to the office to check in. When dropping your child(ren) off, please pull up to the curb, and your child will be assisted by school personnel. We are limited on our pull-in parking spaces, therefore, making it difficult for our parents of preschoolers who need to walk their preschoolers to class. If you need to speak to your child s teacher, please call the school during his/her planning period, send a note, or them. Once children arrive in the classroom, it is difficult for a teacher to have a conversation with a parent while monitoring all the children. Thank you for helping to make our academic setting run smoothly. We are also asking that when dropping children off or picking them up that you approach the circle drive from the east. We have been having a major traffic jam when cars coming from the west need to make the left turn to get into the circle drive. Once this line gets backed up, cars trying to exit the circle drive cannot, and everything comes to a standstill. We suggest that you not arrive before 2:55 for car pick up. Thanks for helping create a safe and orderly environment for our children. Arrival and dismissal times are issues we continue to monitor and try to improve in order to ensure the safety of all of our children here at New Franklin Elementary. 2nd Annual PIG OUT FOR PTO Saturday, November 7 5:00-8:00 p.m. Please join us at our dinner featuring pulled pork, a silent auction, cake walk, and this year we are adding a 50/50 raffle. Tickets for the 50/50 raffle are $10.00 and can be purchased from the following: Becky Schlotzhauer (elementary office) Meg LeCure Kay Schnell Kristin Felten More information will be distributed. Tickets will be sold until November 7. You need not be present to win. PLEASE COME AND SUPPORT THE NEW FRANKLIN PTO! On behalf of all the faculty and staff at New Franklin R-1 Schools, THANKS so much to the parents who provided and/or helped to serve food for the wonderful Back-to-School Breakfast. The food was wonderful and enjoyed by all! We really appreciate these very supportive people!

4 Please mark your calendars: Kindergarten through fifth grade will have their quarterly reading celebration on October 30. Please encourage nightly reading and become aware of your child s reading goals. The Reading Celebration is based upon successfully earning quarterly point goals. Students must reach the goal to attend! PARENTS AS TEACHERS NEWS Fall Family Fun! Come explore with pumpkins and more! Saturday, October 3, 2015 Parents as Teachers will have a Group Connection at the New Franklin Elementary Multipurpose Room from 9:30-11:00 a.m. Families with children birth through pre -kindergarten are welcome to come. Carve out some time and come enjoy the fun! Greetings From the School Nurse: Thanks to everyone for a great start to the school year. Our annual health screening for grades K-5 will be Wednesday, October 21. The preschool students will be screened at a later date. If you have not turned in your child s health form or a copy of newly-received immunizations, please do so as soon as possible. It is important for me to have this information on file. We will continue to do periodic head checks for lice. If your child has had repeat infestations of lice, it is very important to clean bed linens, backpacks, and clothing and to remove every single nit from their hair. Otherwise, more will hatch, and live lice will be back. Parents of Preschoolers Through Grade Two Students: Please remember to send a change of clothing in your child s backpack for him/her in case of an accident. I will no longer have extra clothing at school for their use. A telephone call home will be necessary. Parents will receive paperwork to be signed and returned before students may receive a vaccine. Jan Hackman, LPN HEROES AND VILLAINS 5K Saturday, October 10, at 10:00 a.m. New Franklin Elementary Circle Drive Box Tops for Education Classroom Contests! Please turn in your BOX TOPS to your child s teacher. They will be collected and counted. The classroom that collects the most BOX TOPS for the quarter will earn a free recess. The overall winner at the end of the school year will win a pizza party. Remember, each BOX TOP is worth ten cents, so please clip and save!!! We raised $1, last year, and our goal this year is $1, Please help us to meet our goal! Registration starts at 9:00 a.m. Come dressed as your favorite superhero for a fun run.
