1 POST TITLE: SCHOOLS AND EDUCATION SAFEGUARDING COORDINATOR Job Description Department: Children s Post Number: SS Services Service: Children s Grade: I Services Section: Safeguarding Ref No: JOB PURPOSE: To provide a comprehensive safeguarding service to colleagues working in schools and other educational settings including, nonmaintained and independent schools, academies, city technology colleges, education support services and further education institutions. This will include the development and provision of a comprehensive safeguarding training programme; the provision of support, advice and guidance in relation to safeguarding; and the development and implementation of quality assurance processes across schools. The post holder will undertake the role of designated officer in relation to allegations against staff in schools, education settings and other agencies where appropriate. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Generic 1. To support and monitor the effective and efficient delivery of safeguarding services in line with the requirements of the NCSCB Safeguarding Procedures, the Family Support Strategy and the Children and oung Peoples Plan 2. To be accountable for achieving outcomes in line with local and national performance indicators and to ensure that the service meets departmental targets and the highest standard of work quality. 3. To contribute to the annual service plan and to monitor the implementation of the plan at team level throughout the year 4. To demonstrate leadership and motivational skills, ensuring good communication within the service, and promoting a culture of continuous improvement and service user focus that delivers good outcomes for children 5. To be able to work effectively with partner agencies and establish good working relationships, contributing to and informing strategic plans, practice guidance and other associated processes.

To ensure continuous improvement in services accessing appropriate learning opportunities, promoting a learning culture within the team and ensuring appropriate responses to new guidance and research 7. To contribute to the effective management of the service budget including the monitoring and management of this, demonstrating best value of resources and appropriate commissioning processes where required. 8. To attend and chair interagency meetings in relation to safeguarding business where required 9. Under the guidance of the Service Manager, to take appropriate action to manage the team s human resource processes such as recruitment, staff development & performance appraisal, sickness absence, discipline, harassment and grievance, upholding the Council s equal opportunities policies and practices throughout in relation to administration posts. 10. To take reasonable care for own health and safety and that of other people, ensuring the implementation of appropriate procedures and practice. 11. To provide cover for other team members across the Service where required. 12. To participate in one-to-one supervision with the Service Manager, undergoing annual appraisal and actively promoting own professional development 13. To maintain a knowledge base of relevant policy, legislation, research and practice relevant to the post 14. To work collaboratively with other colleagues and seek out additional work in busy periods 15. Be punctual, reliable and comply with the Council s absence management procedure 16. Understand the need to maintain confidentiality and the secure management of sensitive material 17. To deputise for the Service Manager as requested. Technical: 18. To ensure that the schools and other education establishments comply, contribute and practice a full and appropriate role in the partnership responsibility for safeguarding children and protecting them from harm. 19. To be the named Designated Officer in relation to the management of allegations against staff in these establishments. ou will be responsible for coordinating a response to allegations; ensuring the safety and protection of children is maintained, policies and procedures are adhered to and developed where required. ou will be actively involved in the management overseeing individual cases, including supporting and challenging schools where appropriate and liaising with appropriate registration bodies (e.g. Ofsted and the Independent Safeguarding Authority). 20. To develop and maintain a safeguarding training programme for schools and education settings, and ensuring the coordination and delivery of this to all paid and non paid staff working in schools and education settings. 21. To monitor and report on schools safeguarding practices and arrangements; highlighting and disseminating good practice and supporting leaders in schools to remedy any identified gaps.

3 22. To provide consultation, guidance and support to all schools and education establishments, including school governors, in respect of child protection and safeguarding issues. 23. To support schools in their partnership responsibilities relating to the Local Safeguarding Children Board. This will include within the Serious Case Review and Child Death Review processes; the implementation of action plans and development programmes; audits and other performance management and quality assurance processes. 24. To ensure effective promotion of services within the education setting for children subject to child protection plans and children in public care. 25. To actively participate in appropriate NCSCB / NCASPB partnerships and work streams, and to providing detailed reports and analysis to the Local Safeguarding Board and sub-partnerships, the Department of Education, Ofsted or other inspection bodies and Senior Leadership Meeting as required. All staff are expected to maintain high standards of customer care in the context of the City Council's Core Values, to uphold the Equal Opportunities Policy and health and safety standards and to participate in training activities necessary to their post. The postholder may be required to carry out any other duties as directed by a supervising officer, the responsibility level of any other duties should not exceed those outlined above.
