4 Message from the Sustainability Committee For UVU, sustainability is more than the idea of being green. It should take into account the economic, social and environmental aspects of operating a University campus. The purpose of our Strategic Plan is to document the vision, goals and accomplishments of sustainability at Utah Valley University. As we develop and maintain our strategic plan, we must make every effort to promote the efficient and effective management of University resources. The history of Utah Valley University shows a commitment to sustainability; we look to the future with great optimism in building upon this great legacy. UVU s tradition of sustainability began with the design of the Orem campus in The design allows UVU to utilize natural aquifers underneath the campus to help heat and cool buildings. This is done, in part, by extracting water from wells and then returning that same water back into the aquifer, thus not depleting it in any way. This concept was very innovative at the time and has made the regulation of temperature at UVU much more efficient and environmentally friendly. UVU has also taken several other steps to promote sustainability throughout its history. We have completed ESCO s which have identified energy saving retrofits that consume less energy and are more efficient. Water conservation techniques have been implemented to reduce the amount of water consumed in maintaining the grounds of the campus. New buildings, such as the library, have been constructed to high standards of efficiency. The campus needs to move forward by improving or maintaining our current efforts as well as discovering new ideas to implement. A key component to this will be the campus-wide education of UVU s students, staff and faculty in how they can support sustainable practices on campus and at home. Only then can we effectively identify and implement new ideas in transportation, solid waste reduction and energy efficiency. The plan also needs to remain a work-in-progress that can adjust with the input of new and innovative ideas from industry as well as the campus community. Sustainability is a campus community effort, and one that can only be accomplished with everyone working together. Thanks, The Sustainability Committee 4
5 Mission and Vision Mission: Utah Valley University is dedicated to the continuous development of serious and effective sustainability practices with the support, engagement, and thoughtful leadership of students, faculty and staff. Vision: Utah Valley University aspires to serve the present and future community by implementing environmentally responsible practices, superior campus conservation, and focus on producing sustainability-minded students and employees. 5
6 Accomplishments Building and Design: Library o The first High Performance Building in the state of Utah. o Utilizes multiple techniques to reduce energy consumption such as heat reflection technology, free cycle ventilation, evaporative cooling, light shelving, automatic light monitors and extra insulation. o Carpeting in the Library was from green carpet woven with recycled plastics. o Total savings from the library s sustainable practice equals approximately 2,009,333 kwh annually, or nearly $133,823. Capitol Reef Field Station o Built as a means for students to study the Colorado Plateau ecosystem in an engaged learning environment. o Completely solar powered. o Has a strong policy of leave-no-trace ethics. Science building o LEED certified Silver. o Fully automated lighting and temperature control system. o Pollution-sensing exhaust systems to monitor acid, base, and organic exhausts Student Life and Wellness o Currently under construction to LEED standards. o Goal of recycling 90 percent of construction waste. o Scheduled completion in Dec Energy Conservation: UVU uses geothermal wells to heat and cool the buildings around campus. Incandescent lights have been replaced with more efficient light sources (CFL, LED, etc.) Transportation UVU provides discounted UTA tickets to students, faculty and staff. UVU runs a shuttle across campus to reduce the need to drive. UTA bus stops are spread out around campus to provide bus service to interested students. 6
7 Dining Services: Uses the Hobart Flight Automatic Dishwasher which recycles the water used to rinse the soap at the end of the first cycle to rinse dirt at the beginning of the next. The steam is also recycled to reduce the need to reheat the water. Compared to a traditional washer, the Hobart washer reduces water consumption by 66% and energy consumption by 75%. Dining Services partners with a local corporation to recycle the used deep fry oil into animal feed. Dining Services has offered healthier menu to help increase individual wellness. Solid Waste Reduction: UVU has a recycling program with student employees who collect the recyclable material. UVU acquired a new bailer to allow for greater amounts of cardboard and other papers to be compacted and stored until transported to the recycling plant. The Library used recycled plastics in the carpet. UVU holds a surplus sale roughly once per month to auction off old equipment rather than throwing surplus away. Grounds Water: UVU helps decrease the municipal water demand on the community by using irrigation water to water the grounds rather than culinary water. There are two large irrigation ponds on campus with concrete lining to prevent seepage and waste. These ponds also double as reflection ponds. UVU utilizes a sophisticated weather-activated irrigation system which detects temperature, humidity, light, wind and evaporation to determine if watering is needed. Much of the watering on campus is done through liquid injection which reduces evaporation waste. Courses and Programs: UVU has an Environmental Studies program. There are many sustainability-minded classes students can take such as: CMGT 405G, ECON 3040, BIOL 2500, BIOL 3700, and BIOL Events: UVU holds an annual Environmental Ethics Week. 7
8 Goal 1 Education Why Education? UVU is committed to improving sustainable practice. To accomplish the goals laid out in this plan, the sustainability committee recognizes the need for all student body and university employees have an understanding of what sustainability is, what UVU is doing to further sustainable practice on campus, and what individuals can do to help. This first goal is to provide that essential education. Objectives for Education: 1. Sustainability Website o The sustainability committee will maintain and frequently update the sustainability website to provide a constant, online resource. 2. UVU Review Articles o The sustainability committee will frequently submit articles to be published in the UVU Review to boost the sustainability awareness on campus. 3. Lectures and Workshops o UVU will provide stronger awareness and more opportunities for on-campus lectures and workshops related to sustainable practice. 8
9 Goal 2 Energy Conservation Why Energy Conservation? Energy conservation is an important component to sustainable practice. Energy is a crucial part of our daily lives and it is essential we use this resource wisely. University-wide energy conservation will help reduce the university s pollution output, decrease the financial burden on UVU and preserve our energy resources for future generations. Objectives for Energy Conservation: 1. LEED Certification o All new buildings on campus will be constructed to LEED Silver Standards or higher. 2. Turn Off the Lights o The committee will launch an educational campaign to Turn Off the Lights. This campaign will highlight the energy wasted by failing to turn off lights or other electronic devices when they are not needed. 3. Energy Efficiency o UVU commits to only purchase energy efficient equipment and continue implementing energy efficient measures on campus. 9
10 Goal 3 Water Why Water? Utah is the 2 nd driest state in the United States. With that kind of statistic, it is easy to see why water is one of our priorities at UVU. With water in short supply, UVU strives to conserve and reduce water waste any way possible. Objectives for Water: 1. Irrigation System o UVU will continue to use the municipal water sparing irrigation system for watering the grounds. 2. Xeriscaping o UVU will implement landscaping measures that reduce supplemental water consumption. 3. Water Saving Devices o Drinking fountains will continue to be upgraded to water bottle filling stations around campus and new buildings will be equipped with water saving measures. 10
11 Goal 4 Solid Waste Why Solid Waste? Nearly everything we do produces some sort of solid waste. On campus, everything from printing a paper to buying lunch adds to the mass amounts of solid waste created at UVU. In an effort to save landfill space, conserve our natural resources and reduce pollution, the Sustainability Committee has made solid waste reduction the final goal in UVU s Strategic Plan for Sustainable Practice. Objectives for Solid Waste: 1. Recycle o Recycling is an important way to reduce solid waste and UVU is committed to continuing and expanding the recycling program. 2. Reduce Paper Consumption o With more and more electronic means of communication, many paper processes can go paperless and UVU will make those changes when appropriate. 3. Food Waste o Dining services significantly contributes to the solid waste produced at UVU. It is important we explore additional ways to reduce the waste produced in dining services. 11
