5 Vietnam Background Danida support to smallholder livestock development since 2000 Pilot sites for Farmer Livestock Schools, approx. 3,500 households Smallholder backyard flocks (ducks, chickens, pigs) Training of Trainers and Farmers Poultry and Pig management, feeding, vaccination, treatment, marketing On-farm applied research and education (PhD and MSc) at KVL In , major HPAI H5N1 outbreaks 2004: 17% culled or died, 2005: 3.7 million birds culled. Strategic measures applied: isolation, ban on transport and marketing, culling, vaccination. 2006: no new outbreaks. Infected birds from China? Network impact assessment april-july 2006

6 HPAI task force Network for smallholder Poultry and Livestock Support for smallholder poultry development in 15 countries since 1999 Research on Avian Flu in Vietnam since 2003 Interdisciplinary HPAI task force since 2005: poultry disease specialist, virologist, epidemiologist, socio-economist, medical doctor, agricultural extensionist. The specific objective of the task force is to provide quick and qualified response to partners in collaborating countries regarding strategies for prevention, diagnostics, surveillance and control in relation to outbreaks of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in poultry production systems, subsequent advice on human prevention and treatment.
