Veteran s Day Choice Board These centers were created to give teachers fun, yet educational, math activities for 3rd-5th grade students to help celebrate Veteran s Day. The activities were designed to be used for either a one-day activity or a multi-day activity. If they are used as a one-day activity, students should use the centers grid in a tic-tactoe format, where they should complete three activities in a row, three activities in a column, or three activities diagonally. If the centers are used as a multi-day lesson, students should simply complete a particular activity during class time. Centers Grid-This gives students a basic overview of all of their choices. It also includes directions for the students. Acrostic Poem-Students should write an acrostic poem using the word veteran. They can write a word or phrase that describes a veteran using the acrostic poem template. Newspaper Article-Students can use the newspaper article template to write an article that honors veterans. Picture Book-In this activity, students create a picture book by illustrating and describing five different symbols of our country s freedom. Describe a Veteran-Students should complete a graphic organizer using seven different adjectives to describe a veteran. Comparing Holidays-An H-chart is a great graphic organizer that can be used to help students compare and contrast different topics. In this activity, students will use the H-chart to compare and contrast Veteran s Day and Memorial Day.

Veteran s Synonyms-Students should try to identify as many synonyms as possible for four different words using patriotic stars. Design a Greeting Card-Allow students to create greeting card to give to a veteran. They should use the student directions to design a cover and two inside pages. Star Wreath-In this activity, students can create a red, white, and blue wreath using the included star templates. To add an extra touch to the wreath, students can write something they are thankful for on each star. Fun Flags-Students should use red, white, and blue construction paper to create a flag. Then, students should write a phrase from any patriotic song on each stripe of the flag. *Extras* Writing paper

Compare and Contrast Use the H-chart to compare and contrast Veteran s Day and Memorial Day.

Veteran s Day Synonyms Read the Veteran s Day word on the top of each star. Then, write as many synonyms as you can on the stripes at the bottom of the star. brave respect freedom pride

Design a Greeting Card To share your appreciation to a Veteran, design your own greeting card. Your greeting card should be well presented with a thoughtful message. When you design your greeting card, be sure to include the following: Cover The cover of your card should be illustrated with a colored picture that takes up the entire page. There should also be a very brief message on the cover of your card. Inside You can write your longer message on the inside of the card. You can write it as a poem, letter, or however you choose. Be sure to sign you name on the inside of the card. You will also need to decorate both sides of the card. Remember to take your time to make this a special gift.
