1 Getting Started. When you arrive at the home page, if your institute has a ScienceDirect license, you will be automatically recognized as a licensed user. As a licensed user you can: Browse table of contents of over,700 journals Search across all information available in the database View abstracts of over million articles View the full-text of articles in those journals subscribed to by your institute Go to Login and register to create a Personal Profile. A Personal Profile allows you to: Save Searches Create Search Alerts, Journal Issue Alerts and Citation Alerts Create a Favorite Journals List which you can browse and search Create a search history and combine searches NB - In order to perform the personal login, cookies must be enabled on your browser. The cookies are cleared from your browser when you end your login session. Select a Subject Corner a home page focused on your field of interest, and designed to make accessing content in ScienceDirect in your scientific discipline quicker and easier. PAGE OF 9

2 Quick Search, Journals, Reference Works and Abstract Databases Quick Search A simple and convenient search box giving immediate results without the need to fill in a search form in the traditional way. Quick Search allows you to search within full-text sources. You can Quick Search by: Title Abstract Keywords Authors...simply type in your search term and click go! Journals By clicking on the journals button you can browse our complete list of over,700 titles. Abstracts are free for all. Abstract databases Allows you to browse a list of databases available on ScienceDirect. Reference Works Takes you to a browseable list of reference works on ScienceDirect. Icons Indicate the level of access your institute has to a particular journal: = Subscribed you can view the full-text of this journal = Non-subscribed you can view the abstract of this article = Complimentary You can view the full-text of this article for a limited period = Full-text content accessed via a link to partner websites PAGE OF 9

3 Browsing Journals Search for a Journal Title A simple search box that allows you to locate a particular journal in ScienceDirect by entering key words from the journal title. Browse all journals in ScienceDirect or just those journals in your Favorite Journals List or just those journals in a particular subject area or just those journals your institute subscribes to or non-subscribed journals. You can Browse Journals alphabetically by: n Title n Subject category n Publisher Once you have selected a journal, more information is available when you click on the links below the journal cover to: n View a free online sample copy n Read about the journal scope (from the Publisher website) n Discover information for authors on how to submit to this journal. Browse Articles in Press papers that have been peer reviewed and accepted for publication, but have not yet been published in the printed journal. PAGE OF 9

4 Searching Search Across all journals or subsets of journals, abstracts, databases and reference works. Go beyond ScienceDirect content to search the rest of the web using the Scirus search option. Scirus is a unique science search engine that searches more than 00 million pages that have been evaluated and selected as relevant and useful scientific web sites. Use the All Sources search form to search across more than one content source on ScienceDirect. Search by using selected fields including titles, author, and keyword all of which can be limited by date. There are search modes: Basic for the novice. Advanced for the expert. PAGE OF 9

5 Getting the Most out of Your Search Before you start to search, make sure you take advantage of the Search History function. Turn on... Search History Allows you to build your research in stages helping the search query process. Select an Action to update your search history: Click on re-run to update search results. Click on edit to modify a query. Click on delete to remove an unnecessary query from the table. Click on Combine with AND or Combine with OR to join queries from the same content source and make a new query. Check the boxes of queries you wish to combine. Click on Save Search to save the search for later recall. 6 Click on Save as Search Alert to save the search and receive an with search result updates monthly, weekly or daily. 7 Articles Allows you to a link to your results to one or more people of your choice. 6 7 PAGE OF 9

6 Abstract Databases The Abstract Database program on ScienceDirect integrates the top scientific databases with the top scientific research. Search the databases individually with all the power of that database, search databases by proprietary name(s), or search a group of databases via a common subject category. Quick Reference Guides for each database are available on the ScienceDirect Info site. 7 Content & Linking From the Article List, you can view a subscribed article in different formats: SummaryPlus Ideal for quick research, includes the abstract, article outline and images, tables and linked references. Full Text + Links (in HTML) The essential full-text format for comprehensive research. This option allows all of the above (abstracts, outline, images etc.), but also has live links in the article references and object linking for selected journals. PDF The article as it appears in the printed journal. Linking from the reference list of the full-text: To Full Text + Links on ScienceDirect. To full-text article on an external web site via CrossRef. 6 To the Abstract (i.e. MEDLINE, ScienceDirect Navigator, BIOBASE, PsycINFO, Ei Compendex...). 7 Order the document to get the full-text article. 8 Linking from the Article Page The Full Text + Links version of the article enables functions such as: Internal Linking To other formats. External Links* Allows you to link to external services related to abstracts or articles. * Check with your librarian for availability at your institute. Cited By Allows you to see all the other articles in ScienceDirect that have cited the article that you are viewing. Save as Citation Alert To save as an alert letting you know when a new article is published in ScienceDirect that cites this article. Article Allows you to a link to the article you are viewing to one or more people of your choice. Export Citation Allows you to download all or a selection of citations and abstracts to a citation management program, e.g. ProCite, EndNote, or Reference Manager. PAGE 8 OF 9

9 My Alerts My Profile From the My Alerts page, you can quickly and easily add, remove, modify and save alerts on the following: Searches Journals (new issues) Citations The My Profile area allows you to: Modify your personal registration details Make changes to your Favorite Journals List preferences Modify alerts.
