Search strategy Keywords Break your topic up into specific areas for research and create a list of keywords for searching Do this before you begin your search and as you go along (article keywords, search results)
Search strategy Start simple Refine your results Too many Add keywords by AND More specific keywords Use filters: language, date, study type Too few Add synonyms by OR Less specific keywords Related articles
Search strategy Refine your results Too specific Review articles Check the references Too basic Check citations (cited by)
Search strategy: Example Topic: Association among IL-1 gene polymorphism, diabetes and periodontitis Key words Interleukin 1 gene polymorphism Diabetes Periodontitis
Search strategy: Example Some search commands: gene polymorphism - review gene polymorphism AND diabetes Interleukin 1 AND gene polymorphism AND Diabetes AND Periodontitis Interleukin 1 AND gene polymorphism AND Diabetes Interleukin 1 AND gene polymorphism AND Periodontitis (Interleukin OR cytokine) AND ( gene polymorphism OR genetic) AND Diabetes AND Periodont*

Evaluate Audience Reliability Currency Accuracy Is the site aimed at school children or university level? Is the author identified? Do they have relevant qualifications? Can you identify an institution or organization? Look at the URL (web address) for information: is the page hosted by an educational institution or government department? Is it a commercial site, or a personal web page? Has the article been dated? When has it last updated? Does it cover recent news? Can you check the information? Sites that quote statistics should have a bibliography. What kind of references have been used? Are all aspects of the subject covered? Does the text use graphs, images and photographs where appropriate? Objectivity Does the material cover all viewpoints? Are they trying to sell a product or idea? Is the information biased, controversial or misleading? Extreme or emotional language is a warning sign.
