Pacific Energy Conference Innovation Utilities of the Future Michelle Taylor Ergon Energy May 2016
Overview Ergon Energy challenges and opportunities Renewable energy enablement Opportunities with energy storage and power electronics Shaping energy usage
Ergon Energy service area Over 733,000 customers across a 1 million sq km service area 160,000 km network 33 remote power stations isolated from our network serving 7,000 customers 20,000 residents Highest penetration of distributed residential pv systems SWER network 65,000km serving 25,000 customers Long background in Stand- Alone Power Systems across Australia hybrid solar diesel systems 3
Renewable Energy Over 116,000 solar PV systems distributed on the network Over 439MW solar PV distributed connections Applications for approximately 3GW of large scale solar connections in application process Maximum demand of the network is only 2.4GW 24.1% of detached houses have a PV system in Ergon Energy network, the number is up to 29.3% for Energex Isolated systems private customer PV levels are topped out in many locations Network connection requirements are under revision (regularly) as penetration levels increase and technologies evolve Customers with residential Battery Energy Storage Systems (resi-bess) starting to increase 4
Renewable Energy Penetration On networks voltage rise problems increasing voltage variability - between peak load and peak generations times: Pf 0.9 for some systems Statcom rollout Zero export systems BESS options for customers Energy Management On SWER GUSS Zero export On Isolated systems Solar farms Energy storage 5
Key Innovation Projects GUSS (grid utility support system) CESS (centralised energy storage system) Resi-BESS (residential battery energy storage systems) Smart modelling (Power Factory) Statcoms, large and small Demand reduction enablement Home energy management 6
Smarter Devices Customer side of the meter Network side of the meter Home Energy Management Voltage regulators Electric Vehicles Chargers Statcom devices Inverters PV and Battery Energy storage Smart Appliances Protection devices 7
Energy Storage - an Enabler 8
GUSS Grid Utility Support System
GUSS Grid Utility Support System SWER capacity constraints low density network, short term capacity and power quality issues Energy storage development GUSS 25kW single phase inverter, 100kWh energy storage lithium batteries Smart control local and remote Low installation cost, fast deployment First deployment 20 units total of 2MWh, 500kW over 14 sites 10
GUSS Grid Utility Support System Technical benefits: Voltage support for light and heavy load periods Supports network upstream and downstream Steady-state vs dynamic Improved modelling to determine best locations and settings Network sensitivities Control system interactions Condition monitoring is key to transition 10 vs 40 year asset life Adapts to changing loads Enables asset deferral Optics on remote network Can increase RE enablement 11
GUSS Grid Utility Support System 12
Real Benefits GUSS has shown 13
CESS Centralised Energy Storage System Increase Renewables Grid Support Enable CESS Microgrids 14
Centralised Energy Storage System 200kWh of Toshiba energy storage Liion batteries 100kVA ABB inverter Potential to integrate with isolated networks and support grid networks/micro grids. The goals of the project are: Provide a sophisticated energy storage test platform for Isolated Systems to develop and test power station control systems. Development of robust technical specifications for future centralised energy storage systems for both isolated and non-isolated networks. Enable Isolated Systems to further understand energy storage capabilities and integration methods Remove barriers to higher penetrations of customer PV and community solar farms on isolated networks, pursuant to the IS strategy Progression of GUSS control system to incorporate diesel generation and test centralised control methodologies 15

IS - Challenges & Operational Limitations 6
IS s Approach to Increase RE Centrally Generated Renewable Energy Customer Connected PV % 30% Renewable Energy Diesel Generation 5
Power Electronics INVERTERS Residential solar PV major driver for change Significantly lower price. Significant design and control developments Now 30YEARS AGO Future Basic design and functionality. Inverters being used of UPS or off-grid supply. Home batteries will be major driver for change Expect smaller, better suited to new battery technology charging. Do we need to drive change?
Power Electronics THE BENEFITS /// STATCOM Voltage rise due to solar PV is the biggest issue facing our LV networks in the future Lower Cost/Ease of Install Fast Response Real-time Network Information Shift voltage up or down based on network need
LV Statcom Key benefits of these LV voltage management devices include: The capability to shift voltage 4V - 6V; Set and forget functionality; Easy to install; Fast voltage response; Ability to correct phase imbalance Deployable along LV network; and Minimise short-term voltage fluctuations. 22
Some installed systems 23
Resi-BESS Over 70 different manufacturers with a variety of products Trials of 4 advanced products in the field for 12 months Trials of 10 products so far in the lab Functionality is relatively limited across most systems 24
Results Field Trials Only 3 of the 11 systems did not have issues that resulted in failure or inconvenience to the customer over the period of 12 months System failures included inverter, BMS, battery management module, communications, on board circuit breakers Support for repair of systems took up to 8 weeks (system offline) and local industry personnel were only able to provide very limited support, support came from Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne and China There were some upgrades in operational firmware whilst in the field There were some in correct programming errors we made whilst the units were in the field Correct installation with essential circuits separated and with the installation of circuit monitoring required substantial work for brownfield installations The cost of the system did not correlate at all to the reliability or to the manufacturer s desire/ability to resolve failures, or to the level of controlability of the systems. 25
Customer Impacts / value 26
Customer Enablement 27
Energy Management Energy Management can enable better use of energy when it is generated Basic controls can achieve a lot (eg DRED) Many devices can shift when they are used given the right management tools enable this up front in new deployments Don t waste energy you don t need to use stand-by power, things that remain on for convenience 28
Summary Control and integration of systems is fundamental to most cost effective and sustainable systems For energy storage and power electronics this requires considerable development and marrying of different skill sets Too tight regulatory boundaries will inhibit the innovation opportunities Business cases can stack up well if the true realities of current situations and opportunities are appropriately valued Development of models to evaluate is becoming a far more cost effective way of ensuring best outcomes. 29
