Trip Dates: May 12 to May 27, 2015 Study tour leaders: Dr. María-Teresa Moinette Spring Office Hours: MWF 12-1 Phone: (405) Office: THH 201 Cou Course description: This course is a study tour which combines travel with lectures, readings, and structured writing classes to provide students with an intense, on-site learning experience. Students will spend two full weeks in Spain visiting the two largest cities that are rich in history, culture, and are of literary significance to the likes of well-known authors: Ernest Hemingway and George Orwell, but are yet two very different cultures. Students will have assigned readings, in addition to guided writing activities, prior to departure. While in Spain students will be required to keep journals noting individual characteristics of the two cities. Noting, discussing, and researching the distinct differences between Madrid and Barcelona is key to passing this course. Please be aware that this is a physically demanding course, which will involve significant amounts of walking. Catalog description: Credit will vary. Subject matter will vary within the department s field of study. Enrollment: Permission of the instructor to enroll. Course readings: Orwell, George. Homage to Catalonia. Harvest/HBJ Book. ISBN Hemingway, Ernest. For Whom the Bell Tolls. Scribner. ISBN Handouts provided by instructor. Required supplies: Notebook, travel journal, camera, and English/Spanish phrase book. Course objectives: Through successful completion of the course, students will

2 1. Demonstrate knowledge of Spain s political and cultural heritage. 2. Create clear, descriptive, and detailed written narrative rooted in personal experience and knowledge of conventions of writing. 3. Conduct effective research that includes pre-trip information, experiential learning, and collaboration with on-site interviewees. 4. Gain a deeper understanding of the varied Spanish cultures (i.e. Castillian and Catalan) and the significance of their individual and dissimilar identities. Transformative Learning Objectives: This course addresses five of the Central Six objectives. Discipline knowledge through onsite visits, required readings, and writing techniques. Leadership by preparing and designing a tour of a selected museum and works chosen by the student. Scholarly and Creative activity by writing throughout the tour and performing research prior to departure. Global Competency will come from a combination of being an active participant in the tour and directly interacting with the Spanish culture. Health and Wellness will be accomplished through daily walking and by a comparison of the Mediterranean diet and the US diet. Course grading undergraduate: 1. Pre-departure preparation and attendance to meetings 10% 2. Two page paper based on research assigned at first meeting- 10% 3. Written paper based on the two required books- 10% 4. On-site active participation, positive attitude, and a good work ethic 15% 5. Journal (daily grade while on tour)- 20% 6. Final assignment. A four-page paper identifying the differences between Madrid and Barcelona based on personal experiences and observations during the tour. 40% Course grading graduate (Same as above with the following modifications): 1. Must turn in a ten page paper that incorporates historical research and a literary connection. Topic will be discussed with instructor at first meeting. Class management: 1. Students are required to attend all pre-departure meetings. 2. Late or missed work is not acceptable and is therefore issued a 25% penalty on the assignment. 3. While on-site in Spain students are required to attend breakfast. A 5% penalty will be incurred for every breakfast missed. 4. Students may not withdraw from the course once travel has begun. 5. Student travelers are expected to comport themselves in a manner that reflects well upon UCO. 6. Students are expected to respect their fellow travelers and obey the laws of UCO student handbook, the US and Spain. If for any reason there is failure to comply with these regulations (i.e. theft, use of controlled substances, destruction of property or any other criminal activity) this student will be promptly procured a return ticket to Oklahoma that will be charged to the student s Bursar account. 7. If you are planning on continuing your travel after the tour has ended, faculty must be made of your plans prior to airline reservations being made on February 9, 2015.

3 Grade calculation: %= A, 80-89%=B, 70-79%=C, 60-69%= D, 59% and below = F. Plagiarism statement: Students are expected to submit their own original work. When citing from the work of others, please use the MLA style. Academic Affairs Student Information Sheet: Finances/ Payment Schedule: Total price $ $ non-refundable deposit due by February 6, $ due by March 20, $ due by April 2, Final payment of $ due by May 4, 2015 Students receiving financial aid and/or college scholarships will work with the instructors to develop a payment plan. Included for the $3,500.00: 1. Five midday meals (The most important meal in Spain) 2. Two dinners 3. All accommodations 4. All transportation 5. Entries into required sites Costs not covered: UCO tuition (3 Hours), meals on air travel days; optional side trips on student directed days, books, bags, camera, passport fee, souvenirs, international student ID card. Pre-departure Meetings, 5:30pm -6:30pm Monday, March 9-- An assignment list of research related to Madrid and Barcelona will be handed out. Students will pick a research area to be presented at the following class. A brief lesson on Spain and Spanish customs will be given, in addition to addressing basic issues of what a study tour is meant to offer. Assign Hemingway & Orwell. Wednesday, April 1 Graded activity (based on research and presentation). Reminder to read the two assigned books for discussion based on previous research. Required two page paper discussing the two books assigned for last meeting \Monday, April 20 Discussion of the two assigned books (Homage to Catalonia & For Whom the Bell Tolls) and turn in paper. Final questions and instructions on the elements of the study tour. Bring journals!

4 Study Tour Itinerary Note: this itinerary may change due to weather, strikes, or other unforeseen circumstances. Tuesday, May 12: Depart Oklahoma City for Madrid Wednesday, May 13: Arrive Madrid, take airport bus to near the hotel Mediodia. Checkin to hotel. Tour neighborhood on foot and stop at grocery store for food and other items. Later that afternoon go for a visit of the Royal Palace, Palace of Arms, and Royal Pharmacy. After site visit, go to dinner together. After dinner, 1 hour of required writing or reading. (5 class hours total) Thursday, May 14: Morning class for 1 hour to discuss the writing from the night before. Visit to the Prado museum after lunch. Students will have the morning to plan their own tour where they will have selected five classic, important, and professor approved pieces that morning to locate, view, and write about. (5-6 hours in museum). Quick and lite dinner. Go to the Plaza Mayor and discuss its historical significance. (2 hours) (9 class hours total). Friday, May 15: Day trip to Segovia by train. Visit the Alcazar de Segovia, the Cathedral and view the working Roman Aqueduct (1 st Century AD). (6 hours) Return to hotel, rest for two hours then meet for one hour of discussion. (7 class hours total) Saturday, May 16: Visit the El Escorial Monastery and Palace built for Phillip II by the master architect, Juan Bautista de Toledo, in the 16th Century. (6 class hours total) That evening go to a Flamenco show. Sunday, May 17: Morning writing class for 2 hours. Students will be given a map of Madrid with various points of interest. They will choose at least three sites to visit, write about and photograph. That evening students will present (with photos and text) their experiences. ( 8 hours of class total) Monday, May 18: Overnight trip to Toledo. Go see the famous work of El Greco. Visit the Primate Cathedral of Saint Mary of Toledo representing the magnum opus of the Gothic style in Spain. Experience a midnight tour of the city where stops will be made at the locations where Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer wrote his famous poetry. We will recite many of his poems in Spanish and in English. (9 hours class total) Tuesday, May 19: Cooking class at Mano a Mano restaurant with Chef Manuel. A trip to the market to discuss the essential ingredients for making Spanish food, followed by a cooking and eating experience at the restaurant. Later that evening a trip to the La Venicia, one of Hemingway s beloved spots that still maintains its early 20 th C. atmosphere. Return to hotel for 2 hour writing activity on the day s experiences. (7 hours of class total) Wednesday, May 20: Visit the Reina Sofia museum to view Picasso s famous Guernica in addition to viewing the building that once served as a hospital. Lunch after museum then we will tour the Retiro park, Palacio de Cristales, and the Correos building followed by a walk down the Gran Via (Madrid s fifth avenue). (6 hours class total) Go home and pack.

5 Thursday, May 21: Leave for Barcelona on the 12:30 train. Arrive at 3:30, take taxis to hotel, unpack and take a walking tour of neighborhood. Eat dinner and discuss Catalonian political, linguistic, and cultural movements (2 hours). One hour writing at night. (3 hours class total) Friday, May 22: Las Ramblas walking tour with a late afternoon visit to the Picasso museum (5 hours). Later that evening have a 2 hour writing period. (7 hours class total) Saturday, May 23: Day trip to Figueras to view the Dali museum. (7 hours class total) Sunday, May 24: Student-directed day: students will be given a map of Barcelona and the option of visiting various important sites. They will be required to write and take photos that later that evening they will present to the group. (8 hours class total) Monday May 25: Guided walking tour of the architecture of Antoni Gaudi. (5 hours) Dinner together and evening tour of old city focusing on the different architectural styles. Visit some of the sights commented by Orwell (4 hours). (9 hours class total) Tuesday, May 26: Student directed day: Excursion to Sitges village and beach. Wednesday, May 27: Return flight from Barcelona to OKC. Post-tour meeting: 12pm-2pm Wednesday, June 17, 2015: Students will turn in their final paper and be ready for discussion based on their experiences and observations. We will also conduct a survey on the class regarding the trip.
