2 Pablo Picasso was born in Malaga, Spain in 1881 Died in 1973 at the grand old age of 92 Spent most of his adult life working in France He was a painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist and stage designer One of the most famous artists of the 20th century Experimented with many different styles of painting Rose period, Blue period and Cubism (which he was one of the founders of) Cubism is looking at objects and people from many different angles but painting them all on the same plain to give a very unusual look

3 The Blind Man s Meal (1903) The painting is not merely a portrait of a blind man; it is also Picasso's commentary on human suffering in general. The meager meal of bread and wine invites references to the figure of Christ whereby bread and wine represent Christ's body and blood. Additionally, the work elicits affinities to Picasso's own situation at the time, when, impoverished and depressed, he closely identified with the unfortunates of society

4 Garcon a la Pipe (1905) The Rose Period signifies the time when the style of Pablo Picasso s painting used cheerful orange and pink colours in contrast to the cool, somber tones of the previous Blue Period. The Rose Period lasted from 1904 to 1906.

5 What is unusual about this picture? With Picasso living Through many art movements He experimented with Surrealism Which was making links with dreamlike imagery such as substituting bread loaves for fingers!

6 Distinguishing features: This is a study of how much pain can be communicated by a human face. It has the features of a specific person, Dora Maar, whom Picasso described as "always weeping". She was in fact his close collaborator in the time of his life when he was most involved with politics.let your eyes wander over the sharp surface and you are led by the jagged black lines to the picture's centre, her mouth and chin, where the flesh seems to have been peeled away by corrosive tears to reveal hard white bone. The handkerchief she stuffs in her mouth is like a shard of glass. Her eyes are black apertures. When you are inside this picture you are inside pain; it hits you like a punch in the stomach.picasso's insistence that we imagine ourselves into the excoriated face of this woman, into her dark eyes, was part of his response to seeing newspaper photographs of the Luftwaffe's bombing of Guernica on behalf of Franco in the Spanish civil war on April 26, 1937.

9 What are we doing? With sculptor Rob Fogell you are going To produce a wire sculpture based on a self portrait in the Picasso style. In order to achieve this you will need to do the following first:- Produce your own Picasso head from:- Produce a research sheet in your sketchbook for homework to include facts you have learnt today and a Picassohead print out. A self portrait in the Cubist style which you will use to help you create your wire sculpture with Mr Fogell when he visits. This will also need completing for homework if not completed in lesson. To do this you will need to take a series of photos of yourself from different angles and follow the information on the next slide. Your sculpture will look something like this

10 What You Need:Several photographs of yourself from different viewpoints, Scissors, Glue, Paper for base of the collage, markers or paints. You Do: 1.Before you begin, take a look at Cubist paintings online or in the library and notice the way the features in the paintings are formed from a mixture of various angles. Some famous Cubist artists to reference might be Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Paul Cezanne, and Juan Gris. 2.Gather a variety of photographs from various sources. For this project, you will need to have photos of facial profiles, three-quarter views, and front views. 3.Make several copies of each view. 4.Use the scissors to cut out parts of the images such as their lips, eyes, noses, chins, and necks. 5.Lay out your portrait. Draw an outline for the face, and arrange your cut-out features from different viewpoints within it. Cubist art is a little like putting an Egyptian frieze and a Renaissance portrait into a blender, so be sure to mix styles as well as points of view in your montage. 6.When the features have been laid out, glue the pieces onto the paper background. 7. Use tracing paper and a Sharpie to trace an outline of your photomontage. 8. Use paint or Manga Pens to add your colour.look carefully at existing Cubist portrait pictures to get the correct colours.
