3 WHAT IS CYBERBULLYING? Cyberbullying is bullying that takes place using electronic technology Examples include: text messages or s rumors sent by or posted on social networking sites embarrassing pictures, videos, websites, or fake profiles
4 WHY CYBERBULLYING IS DIFFERENT Kids who are being cyberbullied are often bullied in person as well. Cyberbullying can happen 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and reach a kid even when he or she is alone. Cyberbullying messages and images can be posted anonymously and distributed quickly to
5 EFFECTS OF CYBERBULLYING Kids who are cyberbullied are more likely to: Use alcohol and drugs Skip school Experience in-person bullying Be unwilling to attend school Receive poor grades Have lower self-esteem Have more health problems
6 FREQUENCY OF CYBERBULLYING The School Crime Supplement (National Center for Education Statistics and Bureau of Justice Statistics) indicates that 9% of students in grades 6 12 experienced cyberbullying. The 2013 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance Survey finds that 15% of high school students (grades 9-12) were electronically bullied in the past year.
7 Parents and kids can prevent cyberbullying. Together, they can explore safe ways to use technology. Be Aware of What Your Kids are Doing Online Establish Rules about Technology Use Understand School Rules

9 REPORT CYBERBULLYING Steps to Take Immediately Block the person who is cyberbullying Don t respond to and don t forward cyberbullying messages. Report Cyberbullying to Online Service Providers Report cyberbullying to the social media site so they can take action against users abusing the terms of service. Report Cyberbullying to Law Enforcement Threats of violence Taking a photo or video of someone in a place where he or she would expect privacy Report Cyberbullying to Schools In many states, schools are required to address cyberbullying in their anti-bullying policy.
