5 Objectives are most commonly used when seeking a niche job or a PGY-2 experience that involves focusing on a specific aspect of the pharmacy career field. Use the Objective to clearly lead your reader about your interest and ability for a specific opportunity. Doing so can set the stage as to how the reader considers the content of your CV. Read the job description (if available) and evaluate the needs of the employer. Determine how you can fill those needs. Make it your priority to address your ability to fill those needs. 5

8 It s important to format your CV for niche jobs or PGY-2 in a manner that your CV leads (1 st page) with your experience most related to that specific opportunity. This may mean inventing a new subcategory title in order to include all related experience/skills under one topic. For example, if you are seeking a PGY-2 in oncology, it is recommended that you gather all experience (clinical, research, presentations, etc) into one subcategory at the beginning of your CV; you might title that subcategory, Oncology-Related Experience. Your reader may or may NOT be familiar with your employer-organization; a brief (one statement) description of your environment may help them to better picture the nature of your work. 8
9 Describe your accomplishments and specific tasks rather than responsibilities. Emphasize transferrable skills; these are the skills you have that relate or transfer to the opportunity you are seeking. These are more importantly applied to actual employment rather than to the clinical experience. However, the example tangibles and intangibles are taken from Assessment of PharmD Candidate Professionalism, Doctor of Pharmacy Advanced Practice Experience Manual, PHPR 650, 09-10; Ohio Northern University, 9
10 As an intern or on P-6 rotations, you are not as likely to accomplish any change/improvement that will have an impact on your site s return on investment (ROI). As you gain experience and assume more leadership, you are very likely to lead initiatives that will have considerable impact on ROI. The concept of accomplishments are introduced here for you to begin to consider and track. Statements of Accomplishments on your CV are worth any number of statements regarding duties! 10
11 You may want to include Research Experience under the Education section if you have limited research experience or have been listed in only one or two publications. However, if your research experience is extensive and/or you have been published (including being listed as first author), then a separate section is advised. See Style Guide Resources at: or 11
12 Note the paragraph style of this example. Some descriptions can be lengthy; as a result, they may not be as likely to be read. Later in this presentation (slide 26), your are introduced to CV Guidelines. One such recommendation is to reformat any description that is longer than seven lines. Descriptions longer than seven continuous lines tend to be skimmed over by readers. A better technique is to break up the description using bullets for each statement. 12

17 If you have not yet joined a professional organization, do so. These organizations will help you to stay informed on the latest information and research in your field. They also provide you with opportunities to meet and network with professionals in your field. 17

21 Not all Extracurricular Activities are relevant to your profession. Limit your entries to the most related information. 21
22 Only lists Special Skills or Interests if they are related to the opportunity being sought or they are unique and add to the breadth of your abilities. For example, having a native or second language may not be a requirement for the position however, it might add to your employer s available services when treating non-native speaking patients. 22
23 Most students have held unrelated summer/student employment. Even though this information will not hold the same level of importance as your more related information, it is wise to include it. 23
24 Select recommenders who will speak highly about you. Make an appointment to meet with them. Provide each a copy of your CV. Discuss career interests. Ensure you have their correct contact information, particularly their title. Provide them sufficient time to prepare your recommendation and then thank them when it is completed by sending them a Thank You note. 24
25 When determining how to prioritize information on your CV, one way to decide is to first consider how old in the information. For instance, if you will complete or have completed your education recently (less than five years ago), you should place your educational background near the top of your resume. Otherwise, you may decide to place it at the bottom. The key in the deciding should be based on what you believe to be the most pertinent information that will interest your prospective employer/reader. So, it is possible that you should prioritize related experience first. 25
26 Declaring religious or political persuasion is typically considered a personal matter. It is recommended that you keep your content personally neutral. This will preclude any undue prejudice against you. 26

29 Saving your resume with one of the recommended keywords will help recruiters more easily find or source your CV. This is critical if you are seeking either employment or advancement opportunities. 29

31 Versus providing you example CV s which are stagnant, it is recommended you continue to search for documents of current professionals posted to the web. Doing so will continue to provide you with the most current information. Consider carefully what you find! Read descriptions of experience to help you choose wording that will help you describe your information Look for formats to determine how you want to organize your content. Watch for interesting styles. Recruiters report being attracted to documents that look pleasing. In addition to learning how others format their documents, you may find other information by searching for online resumes/cvs. Did you find a job described that sounds interesting to you? Did you find someone who has had a career track that interests you? 31
32 A rubric is a scoring tool that lists the criteria used for which a body of work will be evaluated. Generally rubrics specify the level of performance expected for several levels of quality. Rubrics can help students and teachers define "quality". Rubrics can also help students judge and revise their own work before handing in their assignments. 32
