1 5 th Six Weeks Project Animal Farm English I This is your six weeks project for English I. You may choose to complete an individual project or a group project. Please remember that if you choose a group, all must contribute equally. If you choose a video project then each person must appear in the video. You will be asked to provide a log showing the amount of time each individual spent on the project. WORK MUST BE TYPED, DOUBLE- SPACED, USING TIMES NEW ROMAN FONT, AND STANDARD ONE INCH MARGINS. All projects must have a works cited page. All projects must be school appropriate!! The project will be due on Monday, April 7, NO LATE PROJECTS WILL BE ACCEPTED!!!!!!!!!! You will be expected to complete the majority of the work outside of class, so you need to consider that when deciding whether or not to complete a group or individual project. Each project will be given a point option. You must complete 100 points in order to receive full credit. All of the group projects are worth 100 points, and they must be turned in with a log showing the amount of time each person spent on the project. Group Project 1. Create a news program: The program must have an anchorman, co-anchor, and a special interest reporter. There should be 3-4 people in this group. REQUIREMENTS: section on Russian History section that makes the connections between the characters in the novel and the real life people at least two advertisements that uses propaganda to appeal to the masses Your news cast should be recorded and be at least 5 minutes long. You can either put it on a youtube account or bring it to me on a flashdrive. Must be at least 5 minutes long.

2 You must turn in a copy of your script that is typed in Times 12 New Roman (DS). Must have a works cited page. Please remember that all material should be school appropriate. If it is not then the project will not be accepted and you will receive a zero. 2. Create a comedy show that is a parody of things happening in our government today. (An example would be SNL) This is for 3-4 group members. You must have: At least two different sections that show an obvious parody of something from the news today. You must be able to explain yourself. You must have at least two advertisements that uses propaganda techniques that appeal to the masses. You must record your show. You can either put it on a youtube account or bring it to me on a flashdrive. You must turn in a copy of your script that is typed in Times 12 New Roman (DS). Must have a works cited page. This project may have 1-4 members. You must rewrite the lyrics to the song and perform it. You must record your performance, and put it on youtube or on a flashdrive. Must have a works cited or credits. You must turn in a typed copy of your lyrics. It must be doublespaced, Times 12 New Roman. Please remember that all material should be school appropriate. If it is not then the project will not be accepted and you will receive a zero.

3 4. Create a magazine. This project should have 3-4 members. Your project must have the following: There must be a separate section to explain each of the following: Communism Stalin Trotsky Lenin Must have a section that connects the characters to their Russian counterparts. You must have one example of an advertisement that uses a propaganda technique that appeals to the masses. Must contain one political cartoon that satirizes our government today. There must be a cover page for your magazine. Must have a works cited page Please remember that all material should be school appropriate. If it is not then the project will not be accepted and you will receive a zero. Individual Projects (100 Points) To the animals, they created a utopia in which they ruled themselves and everything they did benefited the whole of Animal Farm. Create a fictional utopia of your own. Create a detailed society and a specific governmental system. You may use an existing governmental/economic system, or you can create one of your own. Consider: democracy, totalitarianism, oligarchy, capitalism, communism, socialism, etc. Some things to consider in the creation of the utopia are a class system, laws, media, personal freedoms, religion, values, family, natural resources, imports/exports, etc. Include a map of your utopia, indicating the name of the country and the capital city. Must have a works cited page. Must be typed Times 12 New Roman, (DS).

4 Prepare a Power Point after researching different means of Propaganda/Rhetoric. What are the significant uses, techniques, and effects of propaganda and rhetoric? Can propaganda be useful and used for a greater good? How does Squealer s technique using lies and denial compare with modern techniques of propaganda and rhetoric? Your project must have a minimum of 20 slides. You must have clipart, animations, and sound. Must have a works cited page. Create a word and/or picture collage representing the entire novel (main characters, major events, turning point, etc). This must be done on a large sheet of drawing paper or poster board (8 x 11 paper is too small). This must be accompanied by a 1 page written explanation of why you selected the certain words and/or pictures. This must be neat and aesthetically pleasing. Create a newspaper about the entire novel that includes such things as classified ads, obituaries, news items, sports photos, gossip, horoscopes, advice column, etc. Must have a works cited page. Create a board game in which the game pieces represent the characters and the board shows the plot sequence/main events of the entire novel. Them must include rules and be playable. You might want to consider games like Life, Monopoly, Clue, or Taboo. Re-write the entire novel in comic book form. You should remain true to any physical or setting descriptions. Keep a diary from a main character s point of view (your gender doesn t matter). This should include her/his thoughts and feelings, actions, and significant events from the entire novel. Must be typed Times 12 New Roman, (DS). Do four pieces of art about the novel. Be sure to include the major themes and characters. These should be accompanied by written pieces explaining them. Each piece must be at least the size of ½ of a piece of poster board. Must be typed Times 12 New Roman, (DS).

5 Create a Power Point Presentation/ Book Report. This should include a minimum of 15 slides, which have clipart, animation, and sounds. The following information must be included: title, author, main characters, minor characters, protagonist(s), antagonist(s), setting, conflict, 3 major events, and resolution. You will present this project in class. (50 Points) Use the alphabet (you may skip 2 letters) and for each letter write a word (noun, verb, adverb, or adjective) that is relevant to the book. Write at least one sentence that tells why this word is significant. Must be typed Times 12 New Roman, (DS). Write a new ending for the story, a new adventure for the main character, or the beginning of a sequel. The tone and format should be the same as the original novel. If you get rid of old characters, then tell what happened to them; if you invent new characters, then describe them. This should be at least 2 chapters long. Must be typed Times 12 New Roman, (DS). Explain how you d make your book into a movie. Write up a cast of characters and tell who would play each one. Where would you film it? What parts might you change/omit? Why? Be sure to explain all of your choices. This must be typed Times 12 New Roman, (DS) Make a diorama in which you show the scene that you feel is the most significant in the story. This must be accompanied by 1 written page explaining why you selected this scene. Must be typed Times 12 New Roman, (DS). Research a political or world leader with which you are unfamiliar. Create a brochure that describes the leader s message and fight, as well as biographical information. Create a cause and effect poster, explaining how each event of the book caused other events to occur. What might have happened had one of the events not occurred? Choose and event to change, and re-write the events that occurred because of that change.

6 (25 Points) Select a character from the book. Then select 10 quotations from the text that you feel reveals the character s personality. You must explain what each quotation/sentence tells you about the character. You must also tell which page the quotation/sentence came from. Story Bag: Put together a bag that contains at least 10 items that would be useful to or significant to a character in Animal Farm. Include a description of each item and its relevance to the story. Create a tri-fold brochure or pamphlet with drawings, pictures, and text that advertise or promote something in the novel. Select 2 characters from the novel and interview her/him. What kinds of things would you like to ask him/her and how would she/he respond? Write this up in an interview format. Make a wanted poster for one of the main characters. Give a physical description and picture, what she/he had done, what the reward is, and who to contact. Also indicate whether she/he is wanted dead or alive. Write a book review for the novel. Briefly outline the main characters, setting, plot, and theme. Also tell whether or not you would recommend this novel to someone your own age and specify who might enjoy it. Must be typed in Time 12 New Roman, DS. Compare and contrast 2 of the main characters from the book. You must write a well-written essay that is typed in Times 12 New Roman, DS. Research the author of the novel. Tell where she/he is from, where she/he went to school, where she/he lives now, her/his family, etc. You should also include the names of other book that she/he has written, what awards/honors she/he has received. This must be in your own words. It must be typed, Times New Roman 12, DS.

7 Make a crossword puzzle using words from your novel. Be sure to include character names, setting, and main ideas or terms from the book. Draw a map of where the story takes place. Label all of the places that were important in the story. Write 1 page about how the places were used in the novel. Write an obituary or a eulogy for one character in the novel. Give all the pertinent information birthplace, schooling, accomplishments, career, etc. How do you think that person would want to be remembered? Create a giant timeline of the important events of the novel. Be sure to include pictures. Write an essay on one of the following topics: Compare and contrast the characters of Napoleon and Snowball. Consider their personalities, motivations and relationships. Who was the better leader? What motivated each of them? What kind of relationship did they have with the animals? How were their views on life and leadership similar or different? Use examples from the text to support your response. Analyze the character of Boxer. What is his role in the life of Animal Farm? How does his role change? Is he an admirable character? Why or why not? Could he have saved Animal Farm from Napoleon s tyranny? Why or why not? Analyze Clover s role in the novel. Consider her role as a worker, caretaker, as well as a friend to the other animals. How does she change throughout the novel? Is she a necessary character? Why or why not? How does Orwell use the technique of irony in Animal Farm? Give examples from the text to support your response. **Each essay is worth 25 points, and it must be typed Double-spaced, Times 12 New Roman.
