In fact, our consultants now provide over 3,700 clients with practical solutions and investment advice on all aspects of institutional investing from strategy structure and implementation through to portfolio monitoring and risk management. We have a number of specialist teams, too. Our pension risk experts, the Financial Strategy Group, deliver strategic risk consulting advice to pension scheme trustees and sponsors, as well as non-pension scheme clients. This involves working with the largest and most sophisticated clients to help them achieve their own unique risk management objectives. We also have a specialist Fiduciary Management team that supports clients with everything from the design and implementation of investment strategy through to ongoing portfolio management. People are living and working longer, legislation is changing, investment markets are more volatile than they ve been for a generation and (of course) the Euro crisis continues to drive uncertainty. The technical skills training is good, but you learn just as much from working closely with more experienced colleagues. 6 TALENT GETTING TALENT TO WORK ACROSS THE WORLD Deliver strategic advice. Create reward, performance and talent frameworks. Help our clients take action to get the very best out of their people in the ever-changing world of work. As a Human Capital Analyst, you ll undertake research and analysis into issues affecting business profitability, focusing primarily on reward (salaries, incentives, benefits) and performance (profits, returns, market value). You may also have an opportunity to get involved in employee engagement, performance and talent projects and research. Your numerical analysis will help develop solutions to address the issues that affect your clients businesses. In your first year you ll have opportunities to work directly with clients and you ll be working with a team of experienced consultants who will provide support and guidance to help you build your skills and knowledge. You ll have the opportunity to study towards the MSc in Human Resource Management, enabling you to become a member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. It takes two and a half years to complete and encompasses core HR practitioner standards. These range from leadership management, resourcing and reward to leading and managing change and considering the international context. They don t just talk about investing in people here. They do it. For example, I m being sponsored to do a Masters degree. You realise why so many senior people at Mercer have come through the graduate development scheme. 7 KATE WHITEHEAD HUMAN CAPITAL ANALYST BSc (HONS) PSYCHOLOGY UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LONDON I worked as a special needs therapist before joining Mercer as a Reward Analyst ten months ago. The transition was easier than you might think. My psychology degree had given me a solid grounding in statistics and numeracy as well as an understanding of what motivates people in the workplace. Those skills have come in very useful. I chose Mercer for all the usual reasons big company, reputation in the marketplace and much more. But it was the Assessment Centre that made my mind up for me. There was such a good atmosphere and people were so friendly that I just knew this was the place for me. Having a buddy on day one to show me the ropes made settling in quite easy. I also got to meet all the senior people from the UK at the graduate induction, which impressed me. And within weeks I was taken along to a meeting with a major oil and gas client in Aberdeen I don t think that would have happened elsewhere. There s a real buzz and pace at Mercer. They don t just talk about investing in people here. They do it. For example I m being sponsored to do a Masters degree. Many senior people at Mercer have themselves come through the graduate development scheme. I think that tells you everything you need to know. 5

8 NICK SELF FINANCIAL STRATEGY CONSULTANT BA (HONS) ECONOMICS AND ECONOMETRICS UNIVERSITY OF BRISTOL I was interested in being an actuary and looked for an internship while studying at Bristol. Mercer accepted me - and I quickly realised it was a firm that would give me the opportunity to develop and grow. The work is incredibly varied and interesting. As an analyst in the Financial Strategy Group, I offer strategic financial advice and help develop bespoke solutions that help companies achieve their risk management goals. It s all about analysing complex issues, consulting with clients and making information clear and accessible. Mercer has invested heavily in my training and development since I joined. They paid for me to complete my Masters in Actuarial Science at Imperial College and have been very supportive ever since. You never stop learning here. Working with bright and engaged colleagues is an education in itself and that s something I really value. I like being part of a global firm and working on groundbreaking projects with big clients. But I also enjoy the people here. It s a friendly place and I ve had the chance to make some really good friends. 68

Our Investments business provides advice, solutions and tools to a wide range of institutional investors. The current economic climate makes it a challenging time for investors: the Eurozone crisis, low yields on government bonds and financial difficulties at many sponsoring employers all combine to mean that our clients are more reliant on us than ever before. There are two routes for an analyst working in the Investments business. You can either join as an analyst in one of the consulting teams, where you will work on giving advice across the full range of investment issues; or you can join one of our specialist teams where you will focus on one particular area. These specialist teams include: Financial Strategy Group here you will work with consultants to help develop and deliver customised solutions and advice for clients to help them manage their pension risk. Our advice includes the complete spectrum of risk management solutions, ranging from innovative liability hedging to risk transfer or balance sheet financing solutions. The result is a diverse and rewarding environment that will allow you to operate at the forefront of the changing pensions landscape. Fiduciary Management you will gain a varied range of experience across Mercer s wider business, working with consulting, portfolio management and investment strategy and risk specialists. Our Fiduciary Management business is ideally positioned to help deliver Mercer s best thinking to clients through implemented solutions designed to deliver their investment needs. By using this service, our clients have more time to spend on key strategic pension issues and are able to run their pension schemes in line with best business practices. You never stop learning here. Working with bright and engaged colleagues is an education in itself and that s something I really value. NICK SELF FINANCIAL STRATEGY CONSULTANT Sentinel this team provides clients with consulting services on all aspects of investment operations and their governance. If you join as an Asset Transitions Coordinator, for example, you will advise and guide clients looking to change their investment strategy with a particular focus on reducing operational risks. Join us as an Investment Operations Analyst, on the other hand, and you will provide analysis on a range of custody services and costs. Whichever route you choose, over the next few years you will work on a wide range of client projects and in time would be expected to develop into a consultant providing advice to your own portfolio of clients. To help get you started you would be expected to complete the Investment Management Certificate and then study towards becoming either an Actuary or a Chartered Financial Analyst. 7

10 RETIREMENT INFLUENCING THE PENSIONS LANDSCAPE OF THE FUTURE Help clients adapt and respond to new challenges. Gain experience and develop your expertise. Then look beyond the number crunching to create real solutions. Careers within Retirement have never been more interesting. Benefit provision is seen as an increasingly key issue by employers and you ll deal with changing legislation, funding levels and priorities while staying focused on the best interests of your client. Actuarial Trainees advise companies and trustees on the design, funding, administration and communication of retirement plans. You ll help manage benefit plan-related risks too, working alongside experienced consultants to deliver innovative solutions. As you might expect, you will study for the Actuarial qualification. Alongside your studies and during your second year of employment, your technical training will also encompass a 10 week rotation programme in our Retirement Service Centre in Belfast. The programme will provide you with a deeper knowledge and understanding of the full pensions valuation process, ensuring you have the technical grounding to become a fully competent actuarial consultant. Retirement Analysts work as part of our specialist Retirement Service Centre in Belfast, producing actuarial technical support for both corporate and trustee appointments. Work ranges across multiple services, including actuarial valuations, accounting disclosures, reporting, individual member calculations and funding updates. Liaising with client teams, you will have the opportunity to work with multiple areas of our business across the UK, France and Switzerland. Trainee Consultants (Retirement) work alongside the Actuarial Trainees to deliver advice on all aspects of retirement plans. You ll learn the intricacies of corporate pension schemes and communicate these to clients in a jargon-free manner. You will study for the Advanced Diploma in Retirement Provision, making you an Associate of the Pensions Management Institute. 8 You get to work with friendly and intelligent people who are incredibly committed to doing things well. 11 ERIK PICKETT ACTUARIAL TRAINEE PHD IN MATHEMATICS UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER My route into the Mercer actuarial training programme was fairly atypical. I graduated in maths at Edinburgh University and completed a PhD in Number Theory at Manchester University before going on to teach in the subject. I then explored the option of training as an actuary, and I was attracted by Mercer s size and reputation. Of all the companies I visited, they were also the one that took the most interest in me personally and that convinced me to join. Most of what I do relates to pensions. I ve been involved in valuing pension funds, working out specific member benefits, doing accounting work, preparing reports and giving presentations to trustees and companies. There s a lively atmosphere at Mercer. You get to work with friendly and intelligent people who are incredibly committed to doing things well. Senior people here are also approachable and supportive. Above all, there s a big emphasis on learning and development. It s one of the best things about Mercer, and next year I start a Masters degree at Imperial College. Senior people have gone through exactly the same process as you, so they know what it involves and how to give you the support you need. That s something I really value. 9

12 DEBORAH WARDLE INVESTMENT ANALYST BA (HONS) MATHEMATICS UNIVERSITY OF NOTTINGHAM I ve learned an amazing amount over the last two years. You are given responsibility pretty quickly here, but the quality of the training and the support you get means that you re able to meet those challenges with some confidence and there s always someone on hand to offer help when you need it. I wanted to use my maths without being stuck behind a desk all day. At Mercer, I certainly get to stretch my mind getting to grips with advanced statistical tools, for example. But there s also a lot of client contact and teamwork, which makes life interesting. It s the best of both worlds in a way. I m in Investments, so on a day-to-day basis I look after pension schemes, charities, institutional investors and insurance companies. Technical knowledge only takes you so far. You also need good communication and interpersonal skills. Every day, I speak to clients on the phone and am the first point of contact for some of them. I also get to attend client meetings, which is really valuable experience. There s a good team spirit here and people are friendly and helpful. Combined with the extraordinary amount of intellectual capital produced at Mercer, the result is a really interesting and stimulating career environment. 10

13 INTERNSHIPS AND PLACEMENTS COMBINING INSIGHT AND EDUCATION WITH REAL EXPERIENCE Placements and internships can give you a valuable introduction to the world of work. Even more importantly, they can give you a powerful insight into what an organisation such as ours actually does and whether or not you would be happy pursuing a career as part of our team. For all these reasons, we run both eight-week summer internships and 15-month placements. If you re in your penultimate year of study, why not get a taste of working for a multinational consulting firm by applying for one of our internships? Each summer we offer internships across many of our UK locations in Talent, Retirement and Investments. These eight-week programmes run from the beginning of July to the end of August. All work is supervised and you ll be assigned a buddy to make sure you settle in quickly and to help you with day-to-day work queries. We also offer 15-month placements within our Retirement Service Centre. Starting in June, these are a great opportunity for you to learn more about the world of pensions as well as fully understand the role of a Retirement Analyst by gaining experience in a supportive team environment. You ll get exposure to global projects and have the opportunity to understand how the work you do impacts on Mercer and our clients. I completed an internship at Mercer while still at university. Here you will start developing your core skills, business acumen and technical expertise that are the heart of becoming a successful consultant. There will be a series of workshops that focus on personal, people and business leadership, as well as activities that will support your learning and enable you to embed these into your daily role. The program will provide you with great opportunities to interact, network and learn from our experienced consultant and leadership team, giving you insights into their world and making your learning experiences become tangible and real. Once you ve started in your role, the next 18 months will be punctuated by training courses designed to develop your commercial awareness and develop other vital skills in presenting and relationship building, for instance that will help make you a successful consultant. TECHNICAL TRAINING Tailored to your chosen business area, a rigorous technical training programme will ensure that you are up to date with the latest industry trends and fully equipped to use the resources and tools available to you. It will combine both formal training and less structured on-the-job training. PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS Most of our graduate roles will involve studying towards a professional qualification. Assessment centre This will involve a number of different activities, business interviews, a case study, some written tasks, a group discussion and a presentation. Afterwards, we ll provide you with full feedback. Business interview Following on from the Assessment Centre you ll be interviewed by representatives of the team that you ll be joining.
