2 STEP ONE You should now have started using your choice of the following containers: Blue wheelie bin kerbside boxes brown wheelie bin biodegradable sacks landfill wheelie bin If you have not already ordered your container/s, please call or visit STEP TWO Preparing for the new collection system You can start using your new recycling containers immediately just put them out on your usual recycling collection day. Get used to sorting your waste into the correct containers a full list is on the tear- off slip in this leaflet. Your landfill wheelie bin should now only be half full. STEP THREE Ready to go... The new collection system starts from week beginning October 2. Recycling wheelie bins/boxes and garden waste wheelie bins will all be emptied one week and the residual landfill rubbish in your green wheelie bin the following week. The detachable calendar explains your collections. Please check to see if you are starting on a landfill or recycling week. Remember your collection day is not changing. Please put the correct bin/s and/or boxes in the usual place at the kerbside on your collection day. During this changeover period a number of households will have to wait an additional week for their first recycling/garden waste collections only they will receive an additional plastic sack for recyclables. Please note no-one will have to wait more than two weeks for their landfill refuse collections. Residents of flats with communal bins and people on sack collections will receive separate information about how the new collections will affect them.

3 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Why is the Council doing this? For environmental and economic reasons. Currently about 35% of residents recycle, but we need everyone to participate. This is because landfill sites are almost full and if we stay as we are, increased charges and fines for burying waste in landfill could cost Bracknell Forest residents millions of pounds in the next few years. Why don t you collect glass? We have a good network of glass recycling sites for residents across the borough, and this is the most effective method of collection. Glass can get broken in bins, making it dangerous for recycling collectors and can contaminate other recyclables. Leaving glass bottles on the roadside overnight can also lead to anti-social behaviour related problems. Why do you only collect plastic bottles? No UK company will process other plastics such as food trays and yoghurt pots at the moment. The Council is working with the Government and the recycling industry to address this issue. Why can t you collect recyclables altogether in one bin? We don t have a sorting facility available at present, although this is part of planned improvements which should be in place by the end of How clean do the recycled materials have to be? Cans, glass bottles and jars can be rinsed in your washing up water but take care with any sharp edges. There is no need for them to be completely cleaned using fresh water, as long as large amounts of food residues are removed. Why do I have to pay for a brown bin and the biodegradable garden waste sacks. Isn t this included in my council tax already? This is an additional service to those provided through the council tax. The charges for the brown wheelie bins and bags are paid by those who use this optional service. What if I have excess waste that won t fit in my bin? Can I put it out anyway? The vast majority of homes will be able to fit their rubbish in the wheelie bins or kerbside boxes. However, we appreciate everyone occasionally has additional rubbish, and this can be taken to the Longshot Lane civic amenity site. We will not collect excess rubbish, either in bags next to the bins or if the bin lid will not shut. Will I be fined if I do not recycle properly? Our approach is to help people to recycle, not to fine them, and we will continue to offer home visits for assistance. However, we would not collect waste for recycling if it has been contaminated by other rubbish as this would result in the whole vehicle load having to be sent to landfill, meaning the hard work of other residents who sort their rubbish goes to waste. More frequently asked questions can be seen at

5 ZONE 2 - COLLECTION CALENDAR 2006/7 REMEMBER YOUR COLLECTION DAY IS NOT CHANGING Green = refuse collection from green wheelie bin Blue = recycling collection from blue wheelie bin/recycling boxes and garden waste collection from brown wheelie bin/bags MARCH FEBRUARY JANUARY 2007 DECEMBER NOVEMBER OCTOBER Please note: 25 Dec collections will be made on Sat 23 Dec. All subsequent Bank Holiday collections will be made one day late. Additional Christmas calendar and information will be issued in December

6 HANDY HINTS AND REMINDERS Bins should be placed at the kerbside by 6.30am on collection day. To reduce food smells (fish and meat especially), double wrap in an old plastic bag. Glass, clothes, shoes, textiles, books, aluminium foil, CDs, tapes, and videos can be taken to recycling banks. You can use a home compost bin for garden waste, fruit and vegetable peelings, and waste from small animals (hamsters, rabbits etc). Parents who switch to washable nappies can claim 30 cashback from the Council to help with the initial costs of real nappies. Visit or telephone for more information. To help minimise waste, try buying products with less packaging (like fruit and veg) that avoid unnecessary trays and wrapping, or buy the large or economy sizes where practical and avoid plastic containers and plastic bags when you can.
