1 7. WASTE MANAGEMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY The tasks that follow will help you prepare and gather evidence for your assessment related to these topics: waste management management of hazardous waste sustainability. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING Organisations must consider minimising waste and ensuring the sustainability of their operations. This is for several reasons. There are legal requirements that cover how organisations can dispose of their day-to-day waste. In industries that produce hazardous waste, there are additional requirements about waste disposal. Many organisations also have corporate social responsibility policies, and these usually include taking measures to dispose of their waste so as not to harm the environment. Organisations also aim to reduce waste in order to keep their operating costs as low as possible. There are laws governing waste disposal and organisations should have policies ensuring compliance. 2 BTEC Apprenticeship Assessment Workbook Level 3 Business & Administration BTEC Unit 1:.1,. NVQ Unit 3: 4.1, 4., 4.3, 4.5, 4.6 Task 1a Describe the main causes of waste in your workplace, and explain how this waste can be minimised. Remember to consider office equipment and any issues arising from the maintenance of this equipment. You could set out your evidence in a table like the one below. One example of waste generated in most offices has been completed for you. Item What causes waste Photocopying Photocopying additional paper pages, photocopying one sided, paper jams in photocopiers 38 M0_BUSI_SB_091_U0.indd 38 How this waste can be kept to a minimum Waste can be minimised by photocopying the exact number of pages required and photocopying back to back. This will reduce the number of sheets of paper used. If photocopiers are regularly maintained, there will be less likelihood of paper jams. If there are fewer paper jams, then less paper will be wasted, as paper that has been caught in a paper jam cannot be reused as it is usually creased and/or covered in toner. Original text and illustrations Pearson Education Limited, /06/011 06:57

3 Now consider each of the items that you have identified that cause or generate waste in your workplace and set out the benefits of keeping this waste to a minimum. Describe your organisation s procedures for recycling waste. Again, one example has been provided for you. Item Benefit of minimising this waste Recycling procedure Photocopying paper This reduces the amount of paper that goes to landfill sites. Our company is charged by the tonne for the removal of its waste. Paper is heavy and so cutting back on paper waste will reduce costs to the company. It will also benefit the environment as there will less waste put into landfill and we are running out of landfill sites. Paper recycling can be an alternative, and there are some organisations that will buy paper waste from businesses. The money received is less than the cost of the paper so no profit is made but it is a potential source of income. Recycling paper bins are located next to each photocopier and in each office where there is likely to be paper waste. Staff are required to place all waste paper in these bins, after first removing paper clips, staples and elastic bands. Bins are emptied at least once a week by the Facilities Department. They place all paper into skips that are collected fortnightly. Original text and illustrations Pearson Education Limited,

4 BTEC Apprenticeship Assessment Workbook Level 3 Business & Administration NVQ Unit 3: 1. Task 1b Explain how you could change your ways of working to improve your efficiency and to support sustainability. NVQ Unit 3: 10.1, 10., 11.1, 1,1, 1.3, 1,4 PUTTING IT INTO PRACTICE This activity will enable your assessor to examine your competence by observing you carrying out workplace activities. You might be asked related questions to test your underpinning knowledge. a. Carrying out everyday activities at your workstation Your assessor will observe you carrying out normal everyday activities to see if you select equipment and materials that will keep waste to a minimum, give best value for money and maximise effectiveness and efficiency. For example, sustainable ways of working include proof reading documents on screen rather than printing out drafts, photocopying documents in the exact number required and back to back rather than single sided, and maintaining equipment properly to reduce any waste caused by breakdowns. b. Disposing of hazardous waste You will also be observed when you are disposing of potentially hazardous waste such as printer cartridges, fluorescent tubes and batteries some of which may be recycled. You should display knowledge of which items are recyclable and the procedures you must follow for the recycling and disposal of any hazardous waste generated in your workplace. 40 M0_BUSI_SB_091_U0.indd 40 Original text and illustrations Pearson Education Limited, /06/011 06:57

5 NVQ Unit 3: 5.1, 5., 6.1, 6., 6.3 PROFESSIONAL DISCUSSION Your assessor will conduct a professional discussion with you that will capture evidence necessary to prove your level of knowledge and understanding of relevant topics. Some topic areas you will need to consider when preparing for the professional discussion include: procedures for the disposal of hazardous materials sustainability in the workplace. Your assessor will plan the content of your professional discussion and will offer advice to help you to prepare beforehand. The professional discussion may cover more than the topics considered in this section of your Workbook. Discussion process The questioning process will offer you the opportunity to show your knowledge and understanding of your organisation s procedures for the disposal of hazardous materials and what you can do to support sustainability in your Workplace. To prepare for this discussion, you should think about how you could answer the type of questions that might be asked. Why do you need procedures for dealing with the recycling and disposal of hazardous waste? What are your organisation s procedures for recycling and disposal of hazardous waste? What are the benefits to an organisation of improving efficiency and minimising waste? How can you improve your working methods and use of technology to maximise efficiency and minimise waste? How can you select sources of materials and equipment to gain best value for money? Original text and illustrations Pearson Education Limited,
