2 What is an Athletic Trainer? Athletic Trainers are highly educated and skilled professionals specializing in athletic health care. As part of a complete healthcare team, the Athletic Trainer works under the direction of a physician and in cooperation with other healthcare professionals, athletic administrators, coaches and parents.

3 The BOC Certified Athletic Trainer Has demonstrated knowledge and skill in six domains having passed the BOC exam: Injury Prevention Clinical Evaluation and Diagnosis Immediate Care Treatment, Rehabilitation and Reconditioning Organization and Administration Professional Responsibility

4 National State Licensure While practice act oversight varies by state, athletic trainers practice under state statutes recognizing them as qualified health care professionals similar to physical therapists, occupational therapists and other health care professionals

5 National Licensure Cont. Athletic training licensure/regulation exists in 47 states, with aggressive efforts underway to pursue licensure in the remaining states and to update outdated licensure.

7 What does all of this mean? MUST be licensed to practice Athletic Training in the State of Michigan January 1 st, 2011 Athletic Trainer is recognized in the State of Michigan as a licensed health care professional

8 Licensed Athletic Trainer (AT) Treat a student-athlete for risk management and injury prevention Perform a clinical evaluation and assessment of a student athlete s injury or illness Provide immediate care and treatment of a student athletes injury or illness Provide rehabilitation or reconditioning of a studentathletes injury or illness

9 Supervision of the Athletic Trainer Athletic Training services shall be performed under the direction and the supervision of an allopathic (MD) or and osteopathic (DO) physician and surgeon who shall be licensed

10 What does Direction mean? Direction means either written, electronic, or verbal order issued by a physician or authorized representative of a physician. (section 17901)

12 What Services can a Coach Perform? CAN offer Basic First Aid Services and Basic Risk Management and Injury Prevention taught in Basic First Aid Training ( FAQ # 19)
