1 NAME: SEMESTER/YEAR: CASTLETON UNIVERSITY ATHLETIC TRAINING PROGRAM Introduction to Athletic Training Checksheet The proficiency checklist is designed as a tool to assist each student in acquiring the proficiencies necessary to graduate from the Castleton Athletic Training Program, successfully complete the Board of Certification examination, and enter the profession as an entry-level athletic trainer. The Introduction to Athletic Training Checksheet checklist is comprised of proficiencies covered in the Introduction to Athletic Training course and fundamental proficiencies relating to the daily operation of the Castleton University Athletic Training Room. The student is responsible for signing up for a session to work on the checklist with an athletic training student currently enrolled in the Athletic Training Education Program or an AT staff member. Each student should review the checklist prior to arriving at the athletic training room for his/her session. After learning about a proficiency in class and and/or reviewing it in the athletic training room, the student should be ready to be "checked off" on that proficiency. Informal discussion and skill enhancement should occur at each session if the student comes prepared. This checksheet must be completed prior to acceptance into the Athletic Training Program and included in the program application materials. A. Orientation to Athletic Training Room: Staff Initials /Date 1. Athletic Training Room experience (hours) policy: a. The student has a clear understanding of the purpose of the clinical athletic training experience. b. The student can explain what hours count towards his/her athletic training experience total. c. The student can demonstrate the proper recording of their athletic training experience. / 2. Daily Treatment Log: a. The student can explain the purpose of the daily treatment log. b. The student is able to demonstrate the proper procedure for filling out the daily treatment log. 3. Castleton University SOAP Note Report: a. The student is able to explain the importance of SOAP Notes. 4. General Athletic Training Room Computer Policy: a. The student can demonstrate general computer skills and understand the operating procedures for the computers located in the athletic training room. b. The student is aware of the use of the NCAA website for Castleton varsity team injury reporting.
2 5. Golf Cart Policy: a. The student can explain the purpose and use of the golf cart. b. The student can demonstrate the equipment that should be loaded onto the golf cart for each practice/game. c. The student can demonstrate the specific locations of the golf cart during either practice or game situations. d. The student can demonstrate driving, storage and key storage procedures for the golf cart. 6. Walkie Talkie Procedure: a. The student can explain the walkie talkie procedure for both practice and game situations. b. The student can demonstrate how to operate the walkie talkie's. 7. Athletic Training Room Appearance and Dress Code: a. The student will explain and demonstrate the dress code for the athletic training room for both practice and game coverage. 8. Athletic Training Observation Student Duties: a. The student can explain their duties and responsibilities for: Pre-practice, practice, Post-Practice, Home and Away Game Duties. 9. Bloodborne Pathogen/Infection Control Policy: a. The student can explain the importance for a bloodborne pathogen infection control policy. b. The student can explain when the policy should be followed and reported to the proper authorities. c. The student can demonstrate how to dispose of material that might be considered dangerous. 10. Athletic Training Room Maintenance, Supplies and Cleaning Procedures: a. The student should be able to explain a clear understanding of why it is necessary to regularly schedule maintenance and cleaning. b. The student can demonstrate the pre and post practice and event cleaning procedure. c. The student can locate all supplies stored in both the storage and the Athletic Training room cabinets. d. The student can demonstrate the stocking of supplies on the table tops prior to practice/games.

The student can explain when it is appropriate to use the various forms of cryotherapy. c. The student can demonstrate the administration and preparation of. 1. Ice bags 2. Ice massage 3. Ice bath 2. Thermotherapy: a. The student can explain the primary indications and contraindications of superficial thermotherapy. b. The student can explain when it is appropriate to use the various forms of thermotherapy. c. The student can demonstrate the administration and preparation of. 1. hydrocollator heat pack 2. Warm whirlpool 3. Paraffin Bath 3. Whirlpool: a. The student can explain the proper procedure in filling and draining the whirlpool. b. The student can explain the proper temperature, water level and treatment time for. 1. warm whirlpool 2. cold whirlpool c. The student can demonstrate the proper use of the whirlpool agitators. d. The student can explain the importance of safety and use of the ground fault switch. C. Basic Taping and Wrapping 1. General Principles and Theories of Taping a. The student can explain the theory and principles behind the use of athletic tape and wraps. b. The student can explain the difference between the various types of adhesive tapes and wraps. c. The student can explain the general rules for tape application. d. The student can demonstrate the proper procedure for the removal of athletic tape and wraps.

The student can demonstrate the following wrapping procedures in an efficient and correct manner. a. Lower Extremity 1. ankle compression wrap 2. lower leg compression wrap 3. adductor hip spica 4. hip flexor spica 5. thigh support 6. hamstring support 7. knee compression wrap b. Upper Extremity 1. shoulder ER spica 2. shoulder IR spica 3. sling application 4. forearm compression wrap 5. elbow compression wrap D. Rehabilitation Equipment Use 1. Theraband: a. The student can explain and identify the various strengths of theraband. b. Student can identify general uses of theraband for rehabilitative use.

The student can explain and demonstrate the dials and readings and how they relate to treatment protocol. d. The student can explain a sample treatment protocol for this machine. 3. Exercise Bikes a. The student can explain the various uses for the bikes. b. The student can explain the theory for the proper seat height and demonstrate adjustments for each bike. 4. Rehabilitation Tools a. The student can name the different equipment available for use in athlete rehabilitation. b. The student can identify general principles of use for each apparatus. E. Level I miscellaneous 1. Crutch fitting: a. The student can explain and demonstrate the fitting of crutches for an individual with a lower extremity injury: height location, hand location, bottom location. b. The student can instruct the injured athlete how to properly use crutches. a. walking- 3 point gait b. walking- 4 point gait c. walking up and down stairs 2. Cane Fitting: a. The student can explain and demonstrate the fitting of canes for an individual with a lower extremity injury: height location, hand location, bottom location. b. The student is able to instruct an individual in proper cane usage.

The student can demonstrate the ability to clean, debride, and protect an open wound. c. The student can explain the importance of wearing a mouthpiece, the different styles available and what sports require their use. b.
