1 Saint John XXIII Parish Religious Education 250 WEST BROAD STREET TAMAQUA, PA Parent Handbook The goal of the Saint John XXIII Parish Religious Education Program is to bring a knowledge and love of Jesus Christ into the lives of all those entrusted to our care. We work in conjunction with parents, who are the first educators of their children in order to continue the saving work of the Church. We strive to: Provide help to parents in the Religious Education of their children. Teach basic truths and traditions of the Catholic Faith. Develop a sense of prayer and worship. Encourage a sense of service to our community. 3 Attendance Policy: Frequent absences will hinder your child s progress and may necessitate repeating a year. If a student misses 3 or more classes a meeting will be set up between the Director of Religious Education and the parents with input from the student s catechist, to discuss whether the child may move ahead to the next level of CCD. If there is a time when your child will miss a class please send a note in advance (when possible) to the Religious Education Office, or call and leave a message on the office answering machine Early Dismissal: If a student must be picked early for a serious matter, the parent should use the Cottage Avenue Entrance and will sign the student out in the Sign Out book. The students will remain inside the building and will only be dismissed to a parent or legal guardian. Early dismissal of students should be a rare occurrence. If a child becomes ill during class you will be asked to pick them up early. Parent Support: The Church recognizes that you are the primary educator of your child. Minimally, we ask that all parents/guardians: Attend mass every Sunday and the Holy Days of Obligation January 1 - Solemnity of Mary; 40 days after Easter - The Ascension of the Lord; August 15 - The Assumption of the Blessed Mother; November 1 - Feast of All Saints; December 8 - The Immaculate Conception; December 25 - The Nativity of our Lord Saint John XXIII Mass Schedule: Check the parish website for bulletin announcements and updates to the mass schedule at: Saturday 4:30 pm (confessions 3:30 to 4:15 pm) Sunday 11:00 am (Children s Liturgy of the Word at 11 am mass) At SS. Peter & Paul Church: Sunday 8:00 am & 9:30 am (confessions 8:45 to 9:15 am) Pray as a family Review lessons, make sure assignments are complete, and make sure the child is prepared and attends class regularly. Continue to grow in your faith by reading Catholic publications, and using Catholic websites. Page 3 of 7

4 Parent Volunteers: Qualified volunteers are always welcome. If you are interested in volunteering please request an appointment with Mrs. Habel, Director of Religious Education, for an interview. All volunteers must adhere to Diocesan Policies including attending one session of Protecting God s Children, submitting to a diocesan background check with approval of your helping in a CCD Program, reading and signing both the Volunteer Code of Conduct, and the Sexual Abuse Policy. Child Protection Catechesis: One of the mandates of the charter passed by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops is that Preventive measures be put into place to ensure the safety of our youth. We implement a children and adolescents protection program in our Religious Education Program. The classes will be presented during regular class sessions. Each grade will have one session. All children will be included in the presentation Sunday, September 20, 2015 unless parents request in writing that their child not participate. Forms are available through the Religious Education Office. Any families that decide not to participate will be provided the material to present to their child/children at home. Protecting God s Children: This course is offered several times a year for Saint John XXIII Parish for all employees and volunteers of the Diocese of Allentown. To find the dates and locations of other classes go to: Diocesan Safe Environment Coordinator: Sr. Meg Cole, S.S.J , Ext. 19 Diocesan Victim Assistance Coordinator: Ms. Wendy S. Krisak, M.A., NCC, LPC Emergency Closings: Please check the Saint John XXIII Website: Click on Parish Life and then on the drop down menu select Calendar Fire Safety: We will have a fire drill Sunday, October 18, 2015 so that students are aware of the emergency exits. Page 4 of 7

5 Progress Reports: Will be issued twice this year. In January please review your child s progress report, sign the report and return it to their catechist. In May you should keep the progress report with your child s sacrament certificates. Mission Collections: An important part of our faith is service to others. Many of our students participate in volunteer service to outside organizations. The Missionary Childhood Association is a Pontifical Mission Society which raises and sends money to children in need throughout the world. It is a program of children helping children. You can support MCA through prayers and weekly donations. Food for the Poor sent a missionary priest to speak with Tamaqua parishioners in The students (in particular Grade 5) were so moved by the stories told by the missionary that they requested that a portion of their Missionary Money be sent to help Food for the Poor. The third Sunday of each month the missionary collection will be sent to Food for the Poor. Discipline: Love God with your whole heart, mind and soul, and love one another as I have loved you. We are called to see Jesus in every person, and to have respect for all life. The first incident of a student being disrespectful to teachers or other students will result in a meeting with the Director of Religious Education. If there is a second incident, the parents will meet with the Director of Religious Education, before the student may return to class. Behavior that is disruptive to the learning of others, harmful to themselves, staff, or other students may result in suspension or expulsion of the offender. While not a complete list, the following are examples of consequences of bad behavior: Truancy, profanity, disrespect, fighting, vandalism, theft, may result in Suspension from the Religious Education Program. Possession of any weapon, possession of illegal substances, possession of pornographic materials, threats of violence, the police will be notified immediately and the offender will be expelled from the Religious Education Program.
