1 Susquehanna Brewing Company September 7th Board Meeting The ELLL will be hosting a fundraiser at the Susquehanna Brewing Company in Pittston on Saturday, October 4th from 6-8pm. Tickets are $20 per person and the evening will offer food, raffles, brewery tours and beer sampling, featuring SBC's Pumpkin and Octoberfest brews. Our goal is to raise enough money to install irrigation for the front field in the spring. Please consider attending as well as selling additional tickets to friends, family and businesses. Please contact an officer for tickets. If you'd like to help with planning the event, please contact Treasurer, Kevin Pugliese, pugliese.kevin@gmail.com. We need help coordinating raffle baskets, food and supply donations, etc. In This Issue: League Improvements Field Maintenance Day Exeter Classic 8/9 Tournament The ELLL is calling an additional meeting for Sunday, September 7th for two important items that will be voted on during the October 5th board meeting. On September 7th we'll discuss amending our constitution to go from a fiscal year of 1/1-12/31 to a fiscal year of 10/1-9/30. Also, we will be accepting nominations for 2014 / 2015 officers. Anyone interested in nominating themselves or another for a position should attend the meeting or express their intentions to a current officer prior to the meeting. For positions where there are multiple nominees, voting will occur on Sunday, October 5th. Those eligible to vote are coaches, current officers, and volunteers that have attended at least 3 board meetings prior to October 5th. 2 Improvements As we close our spring/summer season, we wanted to reflect on how the ELLL has grown. Through the dedication of many active volunteers, we have been able to significantly increase our fundraising. With the fundraising efforts and generous donations from friends of the ELLL, we have made many improvements to our complex. In addition to contributing to the financial health of the league, individuals brought fresh ideas that enhanced the little league experience for our players and their parents. Below are some highlights as to what has been accomplished over the last two years. We are proud to see such growth and progress. 3 Field Maintenance Day We will hold a field maintenance day on Saturday, August 23 rd starting at 9am. Any time volunteers can give is greatly appreciated. We want to take advantage of the warm weather and do what we can to winterize the field and complete some other projects to reduce the amount of work we will need to do in the spring. Our tasks include: 1. Take down all signs along fences, store in back shed 2. Paint any bleachers or dugout sections not yet painted 2. Dig water line trench to get water to the back field 4. Hose out / put away garbage cans, take down the flag, winterize bathrooms, turn off water 5. Close the concession stand Exeter Classic 8/9 Tournament This year's 8/9 Tournament was held from July 11th through August 3rd. We hosted 19 teams in double elimination play. Making it to the finals was our own Exeter team, who made it through the winners bracket without a loss. The boys faced Back Mountain Light Blue in the championship games, but lost the first game 5-0 and the second game 6-5. It was a great effort by the team and an exciting road to the finals. As a fund raiser, the tournament was a great success. The tournament is our largest fund raiser and with the income it generates, we are able to make the purchases we need for maintaining the grounds, purchasing equipment for the ELLL teams, and keeping our registration fees low. Thank you to all of the volunteers who helped prepare the fields, work the concession stand, work the press boxes, etc. As a team, we worked 38 games and countless hours to put on a great event. The tournament was well received by all of the teams that participated and proved to be a lot of fun for the players. We received great feedback about the experience teams had and we hope to attract more teams next year. We will post the written testimonials we received to our website. 4 I would like to thank the organizers of the Exeter little league 8/9 year old tournament for another great tournament. Our kids truly enjoyed this summer tourney from the beginning of each game when they have their names announced to the very last out of a tough loss. It is a big kick for these kids to be labeled as "All-Stars", and this tournament provides the vehicle for that. Exeter Lions Little League, Thanks Again, Carmen Sciandra Pittston Twp LL Hello. I am one of the coaches for 10U Springville Little League team. We recently participated in the 2014 Exeter Lions Little League tournament. We wanted to express how much we enjoyed your tournament. Our little league had never participated in a tournament so we were excited to have a chance to play in a tournament. I am glad that our first tournament experience was in Exeter. I had many questions that Jaime (Tournament Director) was always willing to answer. The pre tournament coaches meeting was informative and helped answer several of our questions. The fields were well maintained and the umpires were professional and friendly. We had a very young team that was excited to play (I think our coaching staff was more excited)! I would recommend this tournament to young and experienced teams alike. If you have a young team and you want them to have a great baseball experience in a friendly environment this is the tournament to join. If you have an experienced team that you want to compete at a high level you will also find this in Exeter Lions tournament. There is opportunity for all levels of play. Thanks again for an experience we will never forget. Looking forward to seeing everyone at next year's tournament! He articulates what we hope to achieve in our league: instilling pride, learning sportsmanship and building friendships. Thanks for being a part of the ELLL. The only reason why I ll probably end up shedding a tear is that this is the last time I m going to coach you guys. But I m going to bring back with me, the coaching staff is going to bring back, you guys are going to bring back that no one other team can provide that s pride. Pride. You re going to take that for the rest of your lives, what you provided for the town of Cumberland. You had the whole place jumping, right? You had the whole state jumping. You had New England jumping. You had ESPN jumping. OK? You want to know why? They like fighters. They like sportsmen. They like guys who don t quit. They like guys who play the game the right way. If everyone would play baseball like the Cumberland Americans, this would be the greatest game. It s OK to cry, because we re not going to play baseball together any more.
