4 As we read, consider these questions: Why is Nick telling the story? Why is Nick confused and a little disgusted at the end of the chapter? Begin reading chapter 1

5 Write Quickwrites at the top of the page. Draw a line halfway down by the hole, splitting your page in two. You have 5-7 minutes to write ½ a page. I will collect them when we have filled up a page front and back with four quickwrites. Quickwrites

6 Explore the idea that you have been given more advantages at birth than someone else. What might be meant by advantages? How are people given advantages at birth? How is this belief false? How is it true? Daisy says she heard a rumor from three different people which means it must be true. Analyze the truth or falsehood of that idea. And consider the question, what does it mean for something to be true? QW Ch. 1

Examine why Myrtle thinks she made a mistake when she married her husband. Why is it such a big deal that her husband borrowed his wedding suit? Describe what these ladies are like that they think borrowing is a bad thing. What do you think about their values?

10 Each group will study two secondary characters. Review the first three chapters of the novel. List key attributes of its characters. Prepare a poster that documents moments when these characters bring out reactions from Nick. What do these characters teach Nick about himself? What do we learn about Gatsby? Character Study

11 Consider Fitzgerald s descriptions as you read chapter 4. Find the three most vivid descriptions in chapter 4. Are they effective? Why or why not? Why does Nick say, There are only the pursued, the pursuing, the busy, and the tired? Chapter 4

12 Examine the list of visitors to Gatsby s house that summer. What do you notice about any particular visitors? Compare those details together to infer conclusions about who Gatsby is as a person. Explain the history that Daisy and Gatsby have had together going back before the war. QW Ch. 4

13 Select a few actions of Gatsby during the scene at Nick s house and explain what they show about Gatsby s emotions. Discuss whether or not Gatsby s house is impressive. Justify your thoughts with evidence from the story. QW Chapter 5

How does the way Fitzgerald describes the Long Island landscape parallel the internal struggles of the main characters? Character Development
