Meeting Dates/Time Fall Semester Tuesdays from 10:00 11:15 Winter Semester Tuesdays from 11:30 12:45 Exception Faculty Seminars are held once a month on Wednesdays from 3:00 4:30 pm in the Carolyn Sifton Lecture Theatre, 130 Agriculture Bldg. During these weeks there won t be an Animal Science Seminar unless stated otherwise. Animal Science Seminar Series includes sessions that are devoted to research and extension or update/review of topics in animal-agriculture. The program also creates a mutually supportive and positive learning environment so graduate students can share their results, obtain feedback on their work, and improve their presentation and communication skills. Course Requirements: MSc Students Written assignment (First Semester) Extension presentation (Second Semester) Scientific presentation (Second or Third Semester) Poster presentation (Third or Fourth Semester) PhD Students Critique of two scientific publications (First year) Completion of a grant application (Second or third year) Presentation of scientific data (Third year) Evaluation Procedure: Written assignments: Evaluated by course instructors Presentations & Posters: An oral evaluation by one of the fellow graduate students Additional written evaluation by two academic staff and six fellow graduate students Student Evaluators and Session Chairs Evaluated by a general evaluator who is a senior academic staff Please refer to the University of Manitoba rules and polices regarding Academic Integrity, Cheating, Plagiarism and Fraud. Attendance in Animal Science Graduate Seminar Series and the Faculty of Agriculture Seminar Series is compulsory for all students who are currently enrolled in MSc or PhD programs in the Department of Animal Science. On occasions wherein a student is unable to attend the seminar, an attendance exemption form (see under templates) must be fill out and signed by graduate student and his/her supervisor before submitting to course instructors. For planned exemption requests (i.e. sample collection, conference attendance, academic exchange, etc) the form must be submitted a week in advance; and for exemption requests for any reason beyond student s control (i.e. illness, emergency, etc) the form must be submitted within a week following the missed session. These records will be retained to monitor annual attendance for each graduate student.

2 Graduate Seminar ANSC 7140/ANSC 7390 Guidelines for the Written Assignment Goals and Objectives: - to identify and review a current subject area. This may be an issue, scientific advancement or other topic relevant to your specific area of research or other area within animal agriculture - to comprehend and interpret the information such that it can be summarized in written format appropriate for an educated audience, such as your future colleagues in industry (i.e. level comparable to that utilization in a publication such as Scientific American ) General Guidelines: - subject area should be current and in the field of animal agriculture - once the topic has been identified, but before writing, please submit a one or two sentence statement describing the content to the course instructor for approval - the goal is to provide enough information to the target audience such that they can grasp the subject matter in a clear and concise fashion - Minimum of 10 key referenced papers (i.e. the written assignment should be a review of a subject area) - Target audience is your peers (4+ years of University education/masters/phd students) Formatting Guidelines: - Number of words: 3000 to font: Times New Roman, Size 12 - double spacing, continuous line and page numbers - general formatting (headings, units, abbreviations, etc) as per Canadian Journal of Animal Science format - acceptable references include: journal articles, books, conference proceedings, theses. Where online references are used, the full web address must be included and accessible. Wikipedia is not a permitted reference source. - references should be cited in the body of the paper using the same format as that adopted by the Canadian Journal of Animal Science - a complete reference list should be provided at the end of the paper (Canadian Journal of Animal Science format) - submit the essay in the Word format An example of a review paper has been included (Kebreab, E., K. Clarke, C. Wagner-Riddle, and J. France Methane and nitrous oxide emissions from Canadian animal agriculture a review. Can. J. Anim. Sci. 86: ) Following submission documents not adhering CJAS formatting guidelines will be returned to the author for amendments prior to review. The reviewed essays will be returned to the author after which time they will have 30 days to resubmit the amended version. 1

Scientific Presentations Animal Science Graduate Seminar ANSC7140/ANSC7390 Guidelines for Effective Oral Presentations Length: minutes in length minutes for questions Topic: Current research project Audience: Your colleagues (4+ years of University/ Master s/ph.d. graduates) Format: 1. Introduction - provide a brief rationale for the research 2. Objectives - state the hypothesis of the research - state objectives of the research and briefly discuss each one to give a clear purpose of the research 3. Materials and methods - provide a brief description of the equipment, techniques and statistics used - avoid overuse of unfamiliar acronyms and define where appropriate 4. Results - present statistically relevant data - use tables, graphs and charts to present data effectively - avoid presenting data that you do not intend to discuss 5. Discussion of results - provide an explanation or interpretation of the results that you have presented - interpretation of the data is a critical component of an effective presentation - 80% of your presentation should deal with the results and summary 6. Conclusions - provide a brief summary of the data and the corresponding conclusions 7. Acknowledgments 8. Never list your references at the end of the presentation you can give the references in the slide in which you refer to them but not as a reference list 1

Extension Presentations Animal Science Graduate Seminar ANSC7140/ANSC7390 Guidelines for Effective Oral Presentations Length: minutes in length + 10 minutes of questions Topic: Within the scope of agriculture but not directly related to your research project Audience: Members of industry, producers. Language and presentation should be understandable to those unfamiliar or less versed in scientific research. Format: 1. Introduction - hypothesis development i.e. what is the topic (current issue) you are going to deal with/what are you trying to accomplish? - describe the industry implications 2. Body - provide information about the topic/issue using existing data - use graphs, figures, images from a number of sources to illustrate key points - interpretation of this information is critical part of the presentation - avoid overuse of unfamiliar acronyms and define where appropriate 3. Summary and Conclusions - provide a brief summary of the information which you have just presented and interpreted - reinforce application to industry 2

5 Animal Science Graduate Seminar ANSC7140/ANSC7390 Guidelines for Effective Oral Presentations C. Guidelines for Preparing Effective Oral Presentations 1. Visual aids - should be readable from all parts of the room avoid overcrowding - limit data on each slide to a maximum of four columns and four rows - include only significant numbers in your tabular data - keep the slides simple when possible use a series of simple slides rather than an extremely complicated one - leave space at least the height of a capital letter between the lines of information - use graphs/figures to describe data, when possible - use contrasting backgrounds for slides - use duplicates if you plan to refer to a previous slide 2. Presentation Style - rehearse your presentation before delivery to ensure delivery within the allotted time - do not read the slides maintain audience eye contact - deliver the presentation at a rate of no more than one slide per minute - plan for a good visual pace in your presentation, matching the verbal to the visual - when appropriate, use a pointer to highlight the data/information you are discussing - respond to questions in a brief and thorough manner - if the chair has not already done so, you may wish to repeat the question to ensure that everyone in the audience has heard the question - be honest in answering questions if you do not know the answer then say so. 3

6 ANSC 7140/7390 Animal Science Seminars Guidelines for session chairs A week before the presentations: At the beginning of each presentation, you will need to introduce the speaker. Contact your session speakers in advance and have them prepare a short biography of themselves. Review the biographies and summarize them for yourself. If you are not sure how to pronounce speaker s name, or the university he/she is graduated from, etc, please ask him/her in advance to make sure you get the pronunciation right! Before presentations start: Ensure AV equipment/laptop present and functioning. Make sure a laser pointer is made available should the speakers require it. Meet with the speakers and introduce yourself as session chair. Remind speakers of the allotted time for the presentation and question periods. Inform the speakers what signal will be used to indicate 1) that there are 2 minutes remaining in their allotted time, and 2) it is time to end the presentation. Call the session to order and introduce yourself as chair to the audience. Describe how the session will run (timing of presentation, questions, evaluations etc.) and any other housekeeping issues. Introduce each speaker before their presentations, giving the title of their talk and a brief summary of their background. During each presentation: Assist the speaker if issues with AV equipment arise and help adjust if necessary. Set the timer upon commencement of the presentation. The responsibility of the chair is to ensure the timely completion of each presentation and question period to ensure the seminar runs to schedule. - Example: For a 13 minute presentation, the chair will raise a card at 11 minutes: chair will raise hand at 11 minutes; chair will stand up at 11 minutes; or any other method that may seem appropriate to remind speakers they have 2 minutes remaining. When the speaker is finished the chair should stand up (if not already standing) and invite the audience to thank the speaker. If time permits, invite questions from the audience and be prepared to have at least one question if none arise from the floor. After the presentations: 1

To close the seminar, thank each of the speakers for their presentations and the audience for attending. If known, announce the speakers for the following seminar. Ensure AV equipment is powered down and stowed if appropriate. 2
