(PRO)SEMINAR : PREPARATION, PRESENTATION, REPORT AND REVIEW Prof. Dr. Heike Wehrheim

Intention/Objective of a Seminar Learn to acquire knowledge on your own, including finding relevant literature, pass it on to others, orally as well as in written form, review the work of others, and, of course, to learn something about the seminar s subject.

Seminar Includes: 1. Presenting your chosen topic to the rest of the participants 2. Writing a report on the chosen topic 3. Reviewing reports of other participants 4. Actively participating in discussions! Final grade: Presentation (40 %) Report (40 %) Discussion (10%) Review: (10%) Not meeting deadlines: one grade down per day; if one part of presentation/report is not based, then whole seminar is not passed

Getting to know your topic Google your topic. The result will be hundreds of pages. Check whether a page has a connection to computer science. If yes, check whether the page has a connection to verification. If yes, start scanning the page. If it is an article, read its abstract. If it is a tool description, read its summary. Decide whether it is related to your topic.

Getting to know your topic Google your topic. If you have found several articles, try to find the most important one (probably cited by all the rest). Taking this article into consideration, look into the past: Which papers referred to in this article seem to be important/fundamental for this area? Look into the future (from the article s point of view): How has this area further developed; has the approach been dropped or are many following papers based on it? Once you have found a bunch of relevant articles, go and meet your supervisor.

Literature search Internet: Google scholar, for example If you find a title and authors of an article but not the article itself: Citeseer (DB) dblp (search with the name of the author) Search on the author s homepage It is always a good idea to search from the Uni PB account; the University of Paderborn has subscribed to a lot of online magazines, conference papers (e.g. LNCS = Lecture Notes in Computer Science)

Choosing literature to read Read the title and assess if the subject is adequate, if so, read the abstract and assess if it is still adequate, if so, take a quick look at it (look at the pictures, read the conclusion) and assess if it is really adequate, if so, read the entire article. It also helps to read the section Related Work in articles because it usually includes a short review of other papers.

Structuring the Subject What are the essential questions? special terms of this subject? most important concepts/solution approaches?

Presentation Duration: Proseminar: 30 min (incl. discussion) Seminar: 45 min (incl. discussion) Aim: To inform the audience about the subject (even better: To fill them with enthusiasm!)

Design of slides Not too much Not too much color Not too small No complete sentences (keywords only!) A picture is worth more than a thousand words. Examples (but short ones only!)

Presentation II Make it clear to yourself what the listeners already know and what they do not know Don t just read out some preformulated sentences Make trial presentations in advance (better: several times): Stop the Time! Be prepared for questions

Writing

Preparation Size: Proseminar: 8-10 pages Seminar: pages Structure: Cover page: Title, author, date, title of the Seminar Abstract Introduction Main part: Perhaps a basic chapter, then the main subject Discussion of related papers Summary/Résumé Bibliography

Abstract Kent Beck proposes four sentences: 1. State the problem. 2. Say why it s an interesting problem. 3. Say what your solution achieves. 4. Say what follows from your solution.

Abstract: Example 1. Many papers are badly written and hard to understand. 2. This is a pity because their good ideas may go unappreciated. 3. Following simple guidelines can dramatically improve the quality of your papers. 4. Your work will be used more, and the feedback you get from others will in turn improve your research. (from S. Peyton-Jones: How to write a great research paper.)

Introduction Presentation of the subject Presentation of the main problem Putting it into context

Middle part Some hints: Think about the general structure first Make sure to properly define/explain all the new concepts Use examples Complement formal definitions with informal explanation

Summary What has been achieved? Résumé Prospects, if possible

Bibliography Few URLs only! Conference papers/journal articles: Name(s) of the author(s) Title Title of conference/ Name of journal Editor (if applicable)/ publisher Series / volume number Year of publishing Page number(s)

Quotations Every text that has been copied word by word has to be marked so! Put it in quotation marks The source of the text has to be listed in the bibliography Omissions have to be marked as follows: [ ] Meyers [3] finds out that well chosen names for the variables improve the readability of a program [ ].

Plagiarism If you literally copy some piece of text from another source without citing (in your slides or your report), we won t let you pass. If you closely stick to a text from another source (i.e., keep the structure of the text and contents of paragraphs while changing the wording), we won t let you pass. If your text mainly consists of citations, we also won t let you pass. Do it yourself!

Review Contents: (we will hand out a form) Summary of the work Strong points of the work Weak points of the work Short evaluation (Readability, structure, covering of the subject and perhaps correctness, language) Detailed comments for the author Reviews are anonymous.

Important You have to give reasons for every comment ( This presentation is not good. is not enough) Write down what you did not understand Check if the article has got a flow of ideas Do not forget positive comments! If possible, make improvement suggestions: An example would be helpful here, A diagram would present this idea more compactly etc.

Meetings You need to attend all of the presentations (of course!). You need to see your advisor at least 3 times: After having read the articles: to discuss their contents After having prepared slides: to discuss these After having written a first version of your report You are responsible for fixing dates for these meetings. Dates for this to be found on the seminar webpage.
