Five Beginning Steps to Personal Handwriting Analysis Shari LeDonne Frisinger, MAS CornerStone Strategies, L.L.C CornerStone Strategies, L.L.C.
2 Welcome! Before we begin this exciting journey, please take a moment to write the following sentences several times; please write it in paragraph format. Please write it in your natural handwriting or handwritings. The little black and white train that could and did. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dogs. Now let s get started!
3 The Science of Handwriting Analysis Handwriting analysis is a science and has been practiced for centuries. It was very prevalent in the 1600 s in France, where a group of French theologians and monks dedicated their lives to the study of this science. Many people in other European countries have spent lifetimes analyzing and refining the intricacies of this fascinating discipline. It became more popular here in the United States in the early 1930 s when a master penman and a shorthand instructor noticed that, even though he taught his students as a group, individuals put their mark in the strokes. He took this aspect and expanded it, tested and analyzed the results, coupling them with known findings and increased the visibility here in the United States. Handwriting analysis is brain writing. Your character traits will be prevalent in your writing, whether you write with your right hand, your left, hand, your elbow, your toe or your mouth. The signals are sent from your brain to the writing instrument.
4 Handwriting analysis has many uses. Some of the more common ways handwriting analysis can be used are: In conjunction with other instruments, as a hiring tool In conjunction with other instruments, as a tool to promote employees As one of the bases for teamwork activities To more fully understand yourself and why you do what you do To realize how powerful your mind is, and how it works with every part of your body An accurate analyses takes all the character traits and weighs them against one another. For instance, if someone s writing shows they have a temper, if they are conservative and like to please others, they will not show their temper as much as if someone s writing shows they are sarcastic and spontaneous. The more you write the more accurate picture the analyst can paint of you. A common question is Can I change my handwriting to change my personality? The short answer is no. You will only add stress to yourself by doing it this way. Change your personality and your handwriting will follow.
5 Handwriting Analysis Is A process to study non-moving graphic formations, created in the mind and written to paper A method to evaluate personalities for problem-solving abilities, teamwork and stress situations A series of analyses and evaluations that can paint an accurate character picture of the writer Handwriting Analysis Is Not Fortune telling or tarot card reading A way to predict the future A cure-all for workplace problems A way to tell the gender or ethnicity of the writer Used to invade the privacy of another There is another arm of graphology, document examination, which covers forgeries and the like. To become proficient in document examination requires years of study, plus years of working with an experienced document examiner. That area will not be covered in this booklet. Disclaimer: The information provided here is done so in a general manner, and does not constitute enough information to accurately assess the character traits of another. This information should not be used in any workplace situation, or any other that may be considered unethical.
6 Elements of handwriting analysis From the time you think I need to write that down until you finish the note, your mind is pouring out your personality in your writings. As an analyst, we look at [this is not an all inclusive listing]: Slant [vertical, left or right] Size of three zones [upper, middle, lower] Upper loops [size and formation] Lower loops [size and formation] I-dots [shape and proximity] T-crossings [shape and position] Beginnings of letters [hooks, lead-ins] Endings of letters [hooks, flow] Location of hooks [zone, letter] Pressure [light or heavy] Circle letters [a, o] Margins [left, right, top, bottom] Spaces between letters [wide, narrow, average] Spaces between words [wide, narrow, average] Spaces between lines [wide, narrow, average] just to name a few
7 Signatures. Your Image to the World A common question is What can you tell from my signature? Unfortunately, not much. Your signature, in addition to typically being written mindlessly, may not have a variety of letters in it. Also, generally speaking, our signature is not a good sample of our handwriting. Think of how you write your signature is it readable, or does it end in wavy lines? Is each letter visible, or do you combine several letters? A signature, when written with a handwriting sample, can be insightful to an analyst. Each part of the signature: first name, middle initial [if written], last name, is taken as a separate word and is analyzed as such. Is the signature the same size as the rest of the letter? In a sample I have of a famous person s writing, he used only his initials as a signature. They were much much smaller than the rest of the writing, and his first name initial was smaller than his last name initial. Does the writer cross out part of their name? If so, they may want to blend into the crowd and not be noticed. Does the writer place their first name higher than their last name? Or write their first name larger than their last name?
8 They think more of themselves than they do about the person that gave them their last name. Does the writer s signature look like it belongs to the rest of the writing? The writer is pretty much true to form, a what you see is what you get type person. In the space below, sign your name as you usually do. Can you read each letter? Is it written in a straight line?
9 The Slant of Letters The slant of letters is the trait that most often changes during the course of writing. The slant shows how emotional one can be and it is analyzed strictly at the time of the writing. The slant is measured from where the bottom of the letter crosses the line it s written on to the highest point of that letter. This measurement is taken only on strokes going up, not down. Generally speaking, the person with straight up and down writing will make decisions based on logic and objectivity. This is the slant I most often encounter in professional situations. The person whose writing slants to the far right can be extremely [that s the key word here] sympathetic to the listener; perhaps even sobbing at a sad story. The person whose writing slants to the far left has a what s in it for me? attitude and may tend to withdraw. The slant can change several times during the course of a writing, and can even change depending on the word written.
10 The Communication Letters There are letters: o, a, d, g and q, that are called communication or circle letters. They hold information on how much or how little you talk and how you express yourself. If these letters are open at the top, it indicates you like to talk, to share your thoughts and opinions. If these letters have a circle on the left hand side, you have a tendency to rationalize actions. You may see the world through rose colored glasses, as you would like it to be versus how it really is. If your small letter o and/or a has a circle on the right hand side, you are discreet and can keep secrets. The larger the circle, the greater the secret you keep. If they have no circles and is closed, you don t talk much. You prefer to listen to the conversation, interjecting only what you believe is important, and with few words. If your a hangs over the letter on the right hand side, you are protective of something possibly your family, your home, your job that depends on the rest of your writing.
11 The Small Letter t This single letter, the small letter t, can tell you the most about yourself. Many of the traits we see in a t we also see in the small letter d. We will discuss eight of them briefly here: Indicates you set high goals; goals that you will need to push yourself to achieve. Indicates that you set low goals; goals that are routine and you can achieve without much thought or effort. Generally speaking, the higher you cross your small letter t, the higher you set your goals. The exceptions to this are when the t is connected to the next letter, such as in the words the, to, take, or other similar words. These t- crossings tend to be lower and more convex than normal. Indicates directness; your preference is to get to the heart of the matter, without a lot of fluff or small talk. You could be seen as rude or blunt, depending on whom you are interacting with.
12 Indicates enthusiasm for the project or task at hand. You can motivate others and, by doing so, can pull them into actively participating. Indicates that you want others to see you in the best possible light, and will do what you can to stay in that position. You give an impression of personal value which you believe others should also value. Indicates stubbornness, possibly to the extreme. You won t change your mind unless you can save face. Indicates sensitive to criticism in the tasks that you do and how you perform them. This may be real or perceived criticism, and may inhibit you from performing your best. Indicates persistence, trying and trying again until you are satisfied with the results. You may use different techniques until you achieve your desired outcome.
13 Other Letters Each and every letter will show some character trait: The humps in the small letters h, m and n show your thinking style [methodical, analytical, exploratory or investigative]. The rounder the humps, the more methodical you think. Where you dot your small letters i and j will show how thorough you are. The closer to the letter, the more attention you pay to details. Lower loops in your g, j, y and z show how much variety you need in your life. The larger the loop, the less satisfied with the status quo you are. Lack of lower loops can signify either a desire to be alone or aggressive tendencies. Upper loops in your h, k and l show how well you relate with and deal with abstract concepts. A wide small letter e will show if you are open to the ideas and opinions of others. A narrow e shows that you will not readily accept ideas that are different from your own.
14 Long, upward word endings show you enjoy and, at times, may crave attention. A t or d that are the same size or slightly taller than the letters a, e, m, n, o, r and s show the writer will think what they what and act how they believe is correct. They don t care what others think about them, that has no influence into their actions. The longer the downstroke on the loops of g, y and z, the stronger your determination and the better you are with longterm projects. The shorter that stroke, the better you are with short-term projects. The more equal the upper and lower loops are of small letter f, the more organized you are. If the upper loop is prominent, you prefer to deal with planning the project. If the lower loop is larger, you prefer to actually do the work. Many times your writing will show a mixture of what appears to be conflicting traits: your o s and a s will be both open and closed. You may have circles on the left side of these letters, and you may not. Some of your t crossings will be high, others lower. This is perfectly normal.
