Dates: November 3-8, 2015 Kanazawa is an attractive city between the mountains and the sea in the center of the western coast of Japan. Kanazawa is a blend of cultural and historical sights and natural beauty. It is city of business, education, and traditional as well as modern culture with friendly and helpful people. Kanazawa was one of the wealthiest castle towns in the feudal Japan during the Edo period, and its cultural heritage is still preserved today. (Kanazawa City Tourism Association, 2015) Did you know? The most famous sight in Kanazawa, the Garden of Six Attributes is considered one of Japan s Top 3 gardens. Kanazawa was one of the few major Japanese cities to be spared USAAF fire bombing during World War II. Kanazawa is known for its traditional Kaga Cuisine. High-quality sake (Japanese rice wine) has been produced in Kanazawa for 400 years from rice A famous local dish is jibuni, made from boiled and seasoned duck and various vegetables. Air Travel The nearest airport serving Kanazawa is in the city of Komatsu (IATA: KMQ). From Komatsu airport, buses run directly to Kanazawa (50 minutes.) The transportation costs approximately 1100 yen or $9 USD. Taxi It is comparatively easy to get a taxi in Kanazawa. More taxi info. Bus There are a number of bus routes in the city area of Kanazawa operated by Hokutetsu Bus. The bus exterior is cream and vermillion. The bus leaves Kanazawa Station every few minutes. Take the bus from the rear door and pay the fare of 200 yen or $2 USD when you get off. Bus info. 7

8 Currency Japan s unit of currency is Yen ( ). Bring cash with you as it is more convenient and easier to find a place to exchange cash for yen and many places do not accept credit cards. Very few ATMs are available in parts of Kanazawa. Be sure to inform your credit card provider before travelling abroad, and be aware you may be charged for cash withdrawals. It is advisable to exchange some cash before arriving in Kanazawa. Currency Converter VISA cards tend to be more widely accepted in Japan for shopping. MasterCard may be accepted, but limited. It is normal to pay a restaurant or bar bill at the register instead of giving money to the waiter/waitress. There is no tipping in Japan. 8

11 Dos and Don ts of Kanazawa As with any new city and culture, being knowledgeable and respectful of the customs are key to enjoying your trip safely. DO make a copy of your passport and carry it with you, while keeping your actual passport locked up in the safe at the hotel. DO be enthusiastic when greeting someone. Greetings are extremely important in Japanese culture. DON T blow your nose in public; this is the height of bad manners. DO shake hands when you re introduced to someone it s impolite not to.
