The prgramme mdule can be delivered thrugh classrm based learning activities, grup discussins, ne-t-ne tutrials, field trips, case studies, rle play and ther suitable activities, as apprpriate. In this prgramme mdule the teacher/tutr will ensure that the learner pays particular attentin t the cnventins f grammar and syntax t cnstruct simple sentences and cnversatins when cmmunicating in the English language. During delivery f this prgramme mdule the tutr shuld explre with learners the different styles f speaking and writing (frmal, infrmal and slang) and when they are mst apprpriately used. Learners shuld be facilitated t use varius reading strategies depending n which is mst suitable fr their task eg scanning, skimming and reading fr detail. In as far as pssible thrughut this prgramme mdule the leaner shuld be expsed t the different dialects/accents they may encunter in Ireland. Sectin : Sciety and Culture In this sectin, whenever pssible, the learner shuld be given the pprtunity t cmpare Irish sciety and culture with that in their hme cuntry. This will bth aid understanding and reinfrce learning. In devising the assessment briefs, care shuld be taken t ensure that the learner is given the pprtunity t shw evidence f achievement f ALL the learning utcmes. Assessment briefs may be designed t allw the learner t make use f a wide range f media in presenting assessment evidence, as apprpriate. Quality assured prcedures must be in place t ensure the reliability f learner evidence. The teacher/tutr will ensure that the learner pays particular attentin t the cnventins f grammar and syntax t cnstruct simple sentences and cnversatins when cmmunicating in the English language Aural Demnstratin The internal assessr will devise 3 aural pieces that tests candidates listening and interpretatin skills in persnal, scial and wrk related situatins. Use rutine vcabulary, t include scial and/r wrk-related terms and tpics. Tw f the pieces shuld be 3 minutes in duratin and ne piece n mre than 5 minutes in duratin. The frmat f the aural demnstratin will be as fllws: Candidates are required t answer questins n each piece. These questins shuld cver the English as a Secnd Language 4N80 April 03 3

Oral Demnstratin Candidates will be required t take part in 3 ral demnstratins cvering areas they have explred during the prgramme.. Persnal interview talk abut and respnd t questins n themselves, family and interests. Infrmal dialgue e.g. shpping returning unsuitable items, rdering frm a menu requesting further infrmatin n ingredients, prtin sizes etc. 3. Frmal dialgue e.g. pening a bank accunt, jb interview etc. The interview and the dialgues shuld be 5-6 minutes in ttal. All instructins t candidates must be in English language. The dialgue, all verbal questins and respnses must be in English. The candidate may be given 0 minutes t prepare fr each dialgue. Dictinaries may nt be used. Evidence fr this assessment technique may take the frm f audi, visual r digital evidence, dcuments/list f questins/rle play scenaris, r any cmbinatin f these. Any audi, vide r digital evidence must be prvided in a suitable frmat. All instructins fr the learner must be clearly utlined in an assessment brief. Grading Distinctin: 80% - 00% Merit: 65% - 79% Pass: 50% - 64% Unsuccessful: 0% - 49% At levels 4, 5 and 6 majr and minr awards will be graded.
