3 When the gates are closed - night tour of the Old Town Wander through the dark Old Town with the night watchman. Travel back to the Middle Ages. Accompany the night watchman as he passes through the dark streets of the Old Town of Rheinfelden. Look over his shoulder as he checks that the drawbridge over the Rhine has been pulled up properly, and whether the tower guards are doing their jobs without the aid of beer and schnapps today. Check at the barracks whether all is quiet among the troops of the Habsburg garrison - or has the odd soldier found his way into the neighbouring Mermaid House? 4 The plague in Rheinfelden On this tour you will find out how the plague came to Rheinfelden and what traces we can still see to remind us of it today. The plague raged in Rheinfelden several times in the Middle Ages - it was a terrible time. The town guide will take you on a trip back to the Middle Ages, when inadequate hygiene favoured the spread of disease. You ll also learn some sayings that we still use today that originated in the time of the plague. Something else that has continued to this day is the fountain singing by the Sebastiani Brotherhood at Christmas and New Year - find out more about how the brotherhood was founded and its centuries old tradition. 6 Rudolf von Rheinfelden - the first German anti-king A very special guided tour: Rudolf von Rheinfelden tells his story first-hand. Do you know about Rheinfelden s most important duke? If not, then now you have the chance to meet him on a guided tour of the town. Rudolf von Rheinfelden, known as the first German antiking to Henry IV, is played by the actor Roland Graf. He takes you back to a time when the balance of power between the church and the worldly monarchy in Europe kept being destroyed. Particular attention is paid to Rheinfelden, and you will learn how the story of Rudolf von Rheinfelden came about. 7 The Habsburgs The Confederates are coming, but not to the Fricktal. As the Bernese and Confederate armies conquered large sections of what is now Aargau, the long rule of the Habsburgs came to an end and an era was introduced that laid the cultural and political foundations for the future canton of Aargau, which was founded in 1803 and became part of the Confederation. Take a look at the signs bearing witness to those times: on Rheinfelden s Town Hall, the Austrian coat of arms still adorns the façade; on the walls of the Stork s Nest Tower you can still see the bullet holes made by the besieging Swedish army; the solid town walls and guard towers made it difficult for them to take the town. 8 To the hangman!... to Rheinfelden Come and meet hangman Mengis in Rheinfelden and learn about the cruel justice of the Middle Ages. The last hangman in Rheinfelden was called Theodor Mengis and he carried out all the death penalties which were imposed in civil trials in Switzerland between 1879 and On this scary and gruesome tour, accompany the executioner Mengis through Rheinfelden to hear stories about justice, the life of an executioner and how the hangings actually took place. 9 Women s stories - about noblewomen, witches and artists On this tour round the Old Town, you learn the stories of some leading women and their lives. From the Middle Ages to the present day, many interesting women have lived in Rheinfelden. Their lives within the town walls were very different. Most of them lived in difficult conditions, their existence defined by disease, poverty and hard work. Housework and bringing up children were usually their sole tasks. Without modern medicine and with inadequate hygiene, giving birth and illness posed great risks. Many of them had no say at all when men were about. Some women, however, lived in luxury, enjoying power and enacting laws which are still important and valid for us today.
