1 COURSE SYLLABUS Vanguard University SPAN 204 Intermediate Spanish II Fall 2010 M 11:00 AM - 12:45 PM/W online NURS 102 Mission of the Spanish Department: The Spanish Department prepares students educationally and spiritually as they seek to learn the language and understand the Spanish-speaking world, its culture, and literature. Instructor: Office Hours: Required Texts: Additional Texts: Professor Elisabeth Reeve elisabeth.reeve@vanguard.edu By appointment Blanco, Jose. Imaginas. 2 nd ed. Boston: Vista Higher Learning, 2011 with valid Supersite code. English Spanish dictionary and/or Spanish verbs handbook. Course description: This course is a continuation of Spanish 203. Continues to develop fluency in all areas of Spanish at a more advanced level. Prerequisite: Spanish 203 or consent of the instructor. Course objectives: The purpose of Spanish 204 is to continue student development of the four language skills of listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Students in this class will actively learn and be responsible for using Spanish structures, vocabulary, and information based on topics that describe the Spanish-speaking world. Readings from the Imagina text and video selections will build vocabulary and broaden cultural understanding of Hispanic countries. Methodology: Readings from Imagina will be used as a basis for class discussion. By means of class activities organized around the text Imagina and video selections, students will increase their listening comprehension of spoken Spanish, expand their vocabulary in the target language, and deepen their understanding of Hispanic culture. Written homework assignments on varied topics will be assigned in class. For full credit, homework must be written in complete sentences and handed in on time. The instruction of this course will be conducted in the target language (Spanish) as much as possible as it will aid in the students exposure to the correct sound and usage of the language. The use of English inside the classroom will be kept to a minimum as we ease our way into the total immersion process. Course Requirements: Exams (40%) and quizzes (30%) The exams and quizzes require that you demonstrate your knowledge of the vocabulary and the structures studied in this class, as well as cultural

2 information obtained from readings and class discussions. You are required to apply this knowledge in meaningful contexts. On quizzes and exams, questions on the cultural readings will be graded based on the ability of the student to demonstrate his/her understanding of the cultural readings, his/her ability to express ideas clearly in the Spanish language using appropriate grammatical structures for the context of the answer, and in relevant situations, the ability of the student to supplement his/her knowledge of the assigned text with original ideas. The exams will have the following components: I. Comprensión auditiva : objective and short-answer questions based on short passages students will hear. II. Vocabulario : writing your own definition of target words or expressions provided. III. Lenguaje y Gramática: the accurate application of grammatical points studied to IV. meaningful contexts. Contenido: Información general y cultural: identificación, multiple-choice, and short essay questions based on the content of the course to include readings and class discussions. V. Other: includes writing a paragraph about yourself in answer to a specific question, describing a picture, etc. Please note: The final exam will be take place on: Wednesday, December 8, 2010 from 11:00 AM to 12:45 PM in NURS 102. Proctored Exams Since this class is partially online, you will need to select a proctor to administer a few of your Chapter tests. Proctors must be either librarians, military educational officers, college professors, professional proctors (such as lab aides) or clergy. The proctor must have a professional address and phone. (hotmail, yahoo, excite, aol, netscape, earthlink, verizon, netzero accounts are unacceptable). The address should correspond to a school or business. Please complete and submit the proctor form by the due date indicated in the Assignments chart. Attendance/Participation (10%) Students are expected to attend all class sessions unless given prior approval to be absent. Up to three excused absences are allowed that include only medical or family emergencies with appropriate documentation. Otherwise, students are also expected to attend the entire class and may not arrive late or leave early without the professor s prior consent. Unexcused absences or partial absences will have a negative impact on the student s class participation grade. Class participation is characterized by being present and contributing to all scheduled classes. It also means arriving to class prepared and ready to practice: you have studied the material to be covered in class ahead of time and have done the required assignments online and/or in your workbook. Your willingness to volunteer often, ask questions, and use Spanish during class will be taken into account every class session. Your oral proficiency will be practiced and evaluated during this time. Homework/Assignments (10%) Much of the homework and online lessons will be assigned through website called the Imagina Supersite. Corresponding assignments will be posted on

3 the site, and it will be your responsibility to login and complete the assignments on time as assigned. There will also be assignments due Student Workbook. These are to be turned in either typed or handwritten on the due date. Assignments collected will be turned in at the beginning of the class period; you may not work on homework during class or turn it in late. If you are absent due to illness, it is your responsibility to find out if homework was collected in your absence, and to turn in proper assignments at the beginning of the following class period. Journal (10%) Students will be required to keep a Spanish journal in a folder or in a notebook. You will periodically hand in your journal as announced in the syllabus. Topics will include personal topics, a Spanish language experience, or a topic on Hispanic culture. Each entry must be at least one page in length. Each journal entry will be evaluated for quantity and quality. Quantity includes at least writing the required length of the assignment. Quality includes both using original ideas and expressing these ideas clearly using Spanish grammatical structures in meaningful contexts. No late journals will be accepted. You must write your own work in this journal. More information on the topic and content will be provided in class.
