1 Department of Pathology (Seoul National University Hospital) A. Surgical Pathology (including cytopathology) The primary goal of surgical pathology is to make an accurate diagnosis by observing and analyzing tissues or cytologic specimens from patients. Also, deciding patients staging and predicting disease progression are the important parts of our mission. For optimal therapy for patients, we are hosting or participating in over 30 conferences to communicate with clinicians and provide the best possible medical information. At present, 16 faculty members, 2 board members and over 20 residents are carrying out their duties treating more than cases per year. For more rapid and accurate diagnosis, special stainings, electron microscope examinations, immunohistochemistry and molecular diagnostic techniques are combined organizationally with the diagnostic procedures of classical surgical pathology and cytopathology. B. Molecular Pathology (including immunohistochemical examination) The importance of molecular pathology is unprecedently increasing due to the development of new targeted anti-cancer therapies and biomarkers. Since the foundation as Molecular and Immunopathology Laboratory in 2008, the average number of performed tests has been increased more than 20% each year. SNUH-Molecular pathology center, now as a top-molecular diagnostic center in Korea, fulfills its mission to diagnose infectious diseases or cancers accurately, predict the prognosis and therapeutic responses of patients by analyzing the genetic changes related to cancer. High reliability and accuracy of our tests makes other hospitals to consult our center for their tests, letting our center play a role as a central lab. By regular and precise quality control programs, we acquired the certificates from Korean Institute of Genetic Testing Evaluation (KIGTE) and ISO. Furthermore, we are participating in various clinical trials in collaboration with clinical oncologists, and execute the cutting-edge tests including target-sequencing projects for cancer gene profiles based on next generation sequencing platform. Ultimate goal of Molecular pathology center is to become a global leader to contribute to the cure of cancer patients and the improvement of quality of life.

2 A. Surgical and cytopathology 2. Visiting fellowship program The aim of this course is the experience and practice of the process of surgical and cytopathology diagnosis for common or special diseases, communication with other pathologists and paramedical personnel, as well as a grasp of application and practical use of medical equipments, facilities, and methods. Acquisition of updated information for surgical and cytopathology in our department will be very helpful for trainee to establish an adequate system using given resource and manpower, to achieve the optimal pathology educational and diagnostic system. 1) Duration : 1 year, 6 months, 3 months courses 2) Educational contents 1 Surgical pathology program - To experience many surgical pathology cases in Dept. of Pathology - To examine and practice the whole process from specimen reception to diagnosis, including the integrative analysis of the results of adjunctive studies - To examine and practice the process of slide manufacturing and specimen preparation using appropriate medical facilities - To examine and practice frozen diagnosis and electron microscope - To understand the resident training system and the course for the medical college students 2 Cytopathology program - To examine and practice the whole process from specimen reception to diagnosis - Specimen handling, cytological preparation 3 Methods : - To participate in the main diagnostic process (tissue, cytology) in Dept. of Pathology - To participate in the gross examination, tissue processing, and frozen tissue processing - To participate in the diagnosis of frozen tissue or electron microscope - To participate in conference (interdepartmental, intradepartmental), journal conference, conferences of Korean Association of Pathologists - To join research meetings of our faculty members if trainee wants

3 3) Curriculum 6 month program, 3 month program (flexible on trainee s demand) Surgical pathology program (molecular pathology program can be included on trainee s demand) - Participation of each specialty: pathology of CNS, head and neck, lung, soft tissue and bone, breast, GI tract, hepatobiliary, male and female genital tract, hematolymphoid system, endocrine, and skin - Rotation of all specialties or some selective specialties in the participant s need - Participation or observation of gross examination - Participation or observation of surgical laboratory/ slide manufacturing - Participation of conference A. Weekly slide conference B. Journal conference C. Gross conference D. Regular staff lecture E. Joint conference (pathology-other department, in need) F. Conferences of Korean Society of Pathologists - Participation of surgical pathology research process and paper writing in the participant s need 1 year program Surgical pathology program + Molecular pathology program B. Molecular Pathology This is an integrated practical education course which is designed for the trainee to learn the concept of molecular pathology and practice essential molecular diagnostic tests. The trainee is also expected to learn the application and practical use of molecular equipments, facilities and methods, which will help to establish an adequate system using given resources and manpower, to achieve the optimal pathology diagnostic system in trainee s country. 1) Duration : 4 weeks program courses (flexible on demand) 2) Educational contents (flexible and tailored education on demand) 1 Immunohistochemistry program : to examine and practice the process of slide manufacturing, slide preparation, immunostaining and reading

4 2 Molecular pathology for infectious diseases : to examine and practice the process of molecular tests for major infectious diseases such as HPV, tuberculosis and non-tuberculous mycobacteria 3 Molecular pathology for cancer : to learn how to perform sequencing, real-time PCR and FISH such as EGFR, KRAS mutation tests and ALK translocation in lung cancers, HER2 amplification in breast cancers, and microsatellite instability in stomach or colorectal cancers and so on 4 Methods - To observe and participate in the process of workflow such as tissue processing and staining in Molecular pathology center - To participate in the reading of immunohistochemistry and molecular pathology journals - To participate in conference (interdepartmental, intradepartmental), journal conference - To read and discuss the papers of molecular pathology in small groups, to write reports of accomplishment every two weeks C. Accommodations Accommodations can be made in the dormitory located inside the hospital compounds. Nearby motels at 10 minutes of distant on walk are another option by trainees will or when the dormitory is not available.
