2 GENERAL LIVESTOCK TERMINOLOGY Feeder - young animal which has not been fattened, and shows evidence of ability to gain weight rapidly & economically. Runt a young animal of small size in relation to its contemporaries. Scrub an animal inferior in breeding & individuality. Stag a male animal castrated late in life, after puberty, after secondary sex characteristics have developed.

3 Stocker term used to define a relatively thin feeder animal. Purchased to utilize low-quality roughage. Weanling A recently weaned animal. Yearling an animal that is one year of age but not yet two. Stud - Reproductive male for hire for breeding.

4 Cryptorkid Male animal with only one functional testicle

6 Cattle Bovine pertaining to cattle Bull uncastrated male beef/dairy animal. Bullock male bovine castrated after developing secondary physical characteristics of a bull Bob Veal slaughter calves under 3 weeks of age Calf young beef/dairy animal either male or female. Calving the act of parturition in cattle. Cow female beef/dairy animal that has had a calf. Dogie a motherless calf

7 Cattle Freemartin female born twin to a bull calf, usually sterile. Heifer female beef/dairy animal that has not had a calf. (Usually less than months of age) Heiferette a heifer that has calved once, usually prematurely, and then is fed for slaughter Springer a female bovine showing signs of advanced pregnancy. Steer castrated male beef/dairy animal. Veal Calves calves fed for early slaughter, usually less than 3 months old

9 Sheep Ram uncastrated male sheep. Cosset lamb raised without help of its mother. Ewe female sheep. Ewe Lamb female sheep less than 12 months old. Hogget a sheep from weaning until its first shearing. Lamb young sheep.

10 SHEEP Lambing act of parturition in sheep. Ovine - pertaining to sheep Buck male sheep Ram Lamb male sheep less than 12 months old. Wether castrated male sheep.

12 Swine Barrow castrated male swine. Boar uncastrated male swine. Farrowing act of parturition in swine. Gilt female swine that has not had a litter. Pig young swine. Porcine pertaining to swine Shoat a swine of either sex, usually between 60 and 150 lbs.

13 SWINE Sow female swine that has had a litter.

14 Horses

15 Colt A young male horse or pony, generally under 3 years of age. Equine Pertaining to horses Filly female horse less than two years of age that has not had a foal. Foal young horse. Horses Foaling act of parturition in horses. Gelding castrated male horse.

16 Horses Hinny offspring of a stallion and a female donkey. Jack A male uncastrated donkey. Jenny A female donkey, also called Jennet Mare female horse over two years of age.

17 Horses Matron A mare that has produced a foal. Mule Offspring of a mare and a male donkey. Pony A small type horse, under 14.2 hands (about 57 inches) at the withers. Stallion uncastrated male horse.

18 Horses Stud Horse A stallion that breeding services are sold for. Light Horse horse normally 14.2 and 17 hands high, used for riding, as stock horses, racing, parades, & showing. Draft Horses Horse normally over 16 hands at withers, used for work. Hand - Equal to a measurement of 4 inches

19 Goats

20 Goats Billy uncastrated male goat. Wether castrated male goat. Nanny female goat. Kid young goat. Kidding act of parturition in goats.

21 POULTRY

22 POULTRY Rooster Adult male (uncastrated) chicken Cocks - Adult male (uncastrated) chicken Cockerels Young male chickens Capon castrated male chicken. Hen female chicken.

23 POULTRY Pullet Young female chicken Broiler young chickens raised for meat Layers chickens developed to produce large numbers of eggs. Chick newborn chickens Roasters mature chickens used for meat. Laying act of parturition in chickens.

24 SCIENTIFIC NAMES Bos taurus scientific name for domesticated or English breeds of cattle. Bos indicus scientific name for humped breeds of cattle. Sus scrofa Scientific name for swne originating from European breeds. Sus vittatus Scientific name for swine originating from East Indian breeds
