When Martin Luther, a German priest and professor of theology, nailed his 95 Theses to the door of the church in Wittenberg in October 31, 1517, he rejected many of the contemporary teachings and corrupt practices of the Roman Catholic Church and initiated a schism. Luther s belief in the gift of God s grace salvation and subsequent eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ alone found him in direct opposition to the Pope. Meanwhile Luther s translation of the Bible into the vernacular made God s word accessible to the wider public for the first time. With the use of the Gutenberg printing press his Protestant teachings spread rapidly across the Continent and onto England and Scotland leading to the formation of many Protestant and Evangelical churches. 4 Itinerary Erfurt Cathedral Merchants Bridge DAY 1 Saturday Australia Dubai An evening flight from Australia (Perth, Melbourne, Adelaide, Sydney and Brisbane) takes us through to Dubai for an early morning arrival and where we have arranged for the hotel rooms to be ready on arrival Overnight: On flight DAY 2 Sunday 3 September 2017 Dubai (U.A.E) This morning we transfer from the airport to the hotel where we have arranged an early check in so you can shower and freshen up. Later in the morning we will gather for worship before you ll enjoy a guided tour of this amazing new city resplendent with stunning skyscrapers and towers: an architectural oasis in the desert. Tonight we will enjoy dinner in a local restaurant overlooking the dancing fountain show. Dinner will be followed by worship at the Holy Trinity Church. Overnight: Dubai DAY 3 Monday 4 September 2017 Dubai Frankfurt Erfurt (Germany) This morning we will depart Dubai and fly to Frankfurt where we will be met by our German tour guide. We embark on the start of our journey in the footsteps of Martin Luther as we travel north-east to Erfurt, one of Germany s most intact medieval cities. Erfurt s University was founded in 1379 and Luther was its most famous student, studying here from 1501, before he joined the Augustinian monks. Our first day in Germany concludes with a delicious Welcome Dinner. Overnight: Erfurt DAY 4 Tuesday 5 September 2017 Eisenach Wartburg Erfurt Today we will travel the short distance to Eisenach, home to the magnificent UNESCO World Heritage listed Wartburg Castle; it was here that Luther took refuge after refusing to recant his writings at the Diet of Worms. Luther s defiance of the Pope and Holy Roman Emperor led to his excommunication and him being declared an outlaw but with the help of Frederic the Wise, Elector of Saxony he found safe haven at Wartburg. It was in the castle that Luther made the first translation of the New Testament into the German language and the town will host the National Exhibition Luther and the Germans in Back in Erfurt we will be guided through the beautiful Altstadt (Old Town); we see the market place with its magnificent cathedral, stroll through the little streets with their rich, timber framed buildings, cross the Merchant s Bridge, and visit the Augustinian monastery which Luther called his spiritual home. 5 Itinerary Eisenach Leipzig New Town Hall Eisleben font Bach memorial, Leipzig DAY 5 Wednesday 6 September 2017 Eisleben We head to Eisleben, the town where Martin Luther was born in 1483 and where he died almost 63 years later. Our tour takes us to the small museum of Luther s birthplace before we visit the Church of St Peter and Paul where he was baptized and then on to St Andrew s to view the last original pulpit from Luther s times. In the afternoon we will visit the Market Church in Halle where the death mask of Martin Luther is displayed. Overnight: Halle/Leipzig vicinity DAY 6 Thursday 7 September 2017 Leipzig Torgau Our first stop this morning is Leipzig, home town of the composer Johann Sebastian Bach. Bach spent most of his life in Leipzig and was the cantor for the Thomas Boys Choir for whom he composed a cantata every Sunday. We will take a walking tour with a local guide and visit Bach s grave at Thomas Church as well as view the Renaissance Town Hall, see the University with its reconstructed facade, and Gewandhaus Concert Hall. Leipzig also played a significant role in instigating the fall of communism in Eastern Europe; in 1989 thousands of Leipzigers joined together in prayers for peace in the Nikolai Church and started marching along the ring road, an action that helped break the Iron Curtain. 6 Itinerary Torgau Hartenfels Castle This afternoon we will journey to Torgau. As the seat of the Elector of Saxony this town was the administrative centre in Luther s times and important decisions concerning the Reformation were made here. The League of Torgau, an important political alliance, to protect religious freedom was also formed here. Local townspeople gave strong support to the Reformation and the coded engraving VDMI which stands for Verbum Dei Manet in Aeternum (The Word of God endures forever) can still be seen above many doors. Our tour of the town will take us to the marvellous Renaissance Town Hall in the Marketplace, Hartenfels Palace as well as St Mary s Church, the burial place of Luther s wife, Katharina von Bora. Torgau is also known as the place that commemorates the meeting of the US and Soviet forces during WWII on 25th April 1945, an important event for the Allied forces. Overnight: Halle/Leipzig vicinity DAY 7 Friday 8 September 2017 Wittenberg A full day in Wittenberg, the cradle of the Reformation, awaits us. In the morning we ll tour the town where Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door of the Schlosskirche on October 31, Luther often preached here and in his time the Schlosskirche was the University Chapel and its doors were used as a bulletin board. We will visit the Lutherhaus, known as the Black Abbey when Martin Luther first came to live in it in 1508; it was here that he had his Tower Experience and first grasped the gift of grace by faith alone. In later years Luther lived here with his wife, Katharina von Bora, and their six children. For the 500th Anniversary the Lutherhouse will house the National Exhibition: Luther! 95 Treasures 95 People which we will get the opportunity to experience. This afternoon you can explore Wittenberg at your leisure wander the old town and enjoy a coffee or ice-cream in the town square before re-joining the group for dinner in a local restaurant. Overnight: Halle/Leipzig vicinity DAY 8 Saturday 9 September 2017 Berlin This morning we will travel to Berlin, Germany s capital and cultural centre, where a local guide will join us and show us the city s iconic sights. We will see the Reichstag Parliament building, walk through the Brandenburg Gate, visit the Holocaust Memorial and enjoy the sights along the grand Unter den Linden boulevard. Remnants of the infamous Berlin Wall will of course be a part of our tour as well. The remainder of the day you will have at leisure for shopping and to make your own discoveries of this exciting city before we meet for dinner. Overnight: Berlin DAY 9 Sunday 10 September 2017 Berlin Following morning worship at a local church we will visit the final of the three National Exhibitions for the Reformation Jubilee: The Luther Effect. 500 Years of the Reformation in the German Historical Museum. Tonight our last dinner in Germany will be spent in a charming, typical Berliner restaurant. Overnight: Berlin Wittenberg Schlosskirche Wittenberg

DAY 11 Tuesday 1 Dubai Today is a full day of leisure in Dubai. You might like to visit the famous Dubai Mall, explore the Gold and Spice Souks or choose one of the many optional tours (available on tour). Tonight will be a fitting end to your holiday as we enjoy a dinner cruise along the historic Dubai Creek. Overnight: Dubai DAY 12 Wednesday 13 September 2017 Dubai Australia B After breakfast we will be transferred to the airport for our final flight home to Australia.
