The birth place of Georg Friedrich Händel, Halle has a long tradition for culture and music and is home of the Händel Festspiele. Henry Melchior Muhlenberg was send out to the Lutherans in the USA by the Francke Foundations in Halle, one of the oldest still existing scholar institutions in Europe. The Market Church houses Luther s death mask. And in the Museum for ancient history the Nebra Sky Disk is displayed, the oldest concrete depiction of the cosmos worldwide, dating back to c BC. Enough to see in Halle and the perfect hub for visiting the places where Dr. Martin Luther lived, worked, and preached. Day 1 Arrival, to Halle Upon our arrival in Berlin we will be welcomed by our German tour director. We board our waiting deluxe motor coach and head to Halle (map: K). After checking in to our hotel, a local guide will take on a first orientation tour through the center. In the market church we will hear a short concert of organ music before heading back to our centrally located hotel for the Welcome Dinner. Day 2 Wittenberg Following the breakfast buffet we start for our first day excursion to Wittenberg (map: C): A full day in the cradle of the Reformation is waiting for us. In the morning we'll tour the town where Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door of the Schlosskirche on October 31, In Luther s time this was the University Chapel and the doors were used as a bulletin board. Luther preached here often and in the City Church of St. Mary. In 1508, when Martin Luther came to Wittenberg, he lived in the Black Abbey now known as the Lutherhaus. It was here that he had his Tower Experience and first grasped the gift of faith by grace alone. Later, Luther lived here with his wife, Katharina von Bora, and their six children. The afternoon is on leisure for own discoveries. 2 Day 3 Eisleben Heading the other direction, we explore Eisleben this morning (map: E). Here Martin Luther was born and died. We visit the little museum in his birth house, see the pulpit in St. Andrews where Luther preached, and visit St Peter and Paul. This church, where Luther was baptized, is now a Center for Baptism. Back in Halle we relaxing at a boat tour on the Saale river, before we enjoy our dinner in a medieval styled restaurant in the old town. Day 4 Wartburg und Erfurt We do a day excursion today to Eisenach (map: G) today. Our first thing to do there is to visit the magnificent Wartburg Castle* where Luther took refuge after the Diet of Worms. Among many letters and books he wrote here is the first translation of the New Testament into the German language. Eisenach also is the birthplace of the great composer Johann Sebastian Bach. Following the tour at the Wartburg we will see the Bach Museum and enjoy an introduction into Bach s work with a musical performance on historical instruments. On to Erfurt (map: H) in the afternoon, the town where Luther lived as a student before he joined the Augustinian monks. We see the market square with the magnificent cathedral, stroll through the little streets with the rich timber framed buildings, cross the merchant s bridge, and visit the Augustinian monastery which Luther always called to be his spiritual home. Day 5 Leipzig It s just a short drive today to Leipzig (map: J) where Johann Sebastian Bach spent most of his life, being the cantor for the Thomas Boys Choir and composing a cantata every Sunday. On a walking tour with a local guide we will visit Thomas Church with Bach's grave, pass the Renaissance town hall, see the University with its reconstructed facade, and Gewandhaus concert hall. Leipzig also is important for the German revolution of 1989 when thousands of Leipzigers joined prayers for peace in Nikolai church and started marching along the ring road. Of course these events 25 years ago will be an important part of our visit there. Tonight we will enjoy a classical or spiritual concert in Halle or Leipzig. Day 6 Berlin It s time to leave Halle and to head back. We travel to Berlin for our final stop on this trip in the vibrant capital of Germany (map: L). Our tour with a local guide includes sights like the Reichstag parliament, Brandenburg Gate, the Holocaust memorial, and Berlin Cathedral. And we will of course see remnants of the Berlin Wall it s already 25 years since Berlin and Germany were reunited! The afternoon offers more possibilities for individual visits at museums in Berlin or for shopping at the Kurfürstendamm boulevard before enjoy our farewell-dinner.
