12 Town of Mukwonago Overview Nestled in the southern portion of Waukesha County, the Town of Mukwonago established in 1839, is comprised of 20,378 acres of residential community surrounded by scenic lakes and rolling hills, with a population of 7,972. Mukwonago offers picturesque views of Phantom Lake to the west, Vernon Marsh State Wildlife Area to the north. The Town Hall is located just a short distance off of Interstate 43, at the intersection of CTH EE and Beulah Road. Mukwonago is about 30 minutes from both Milwaukee and Racine. The first settlement in the Mukwonago area was the Potawatomi Indian Village along the Fox River where the Village of Mukwonago is now located. The Winnebago tribe also lived in Waukesha County before Potawatomi tribe arrived in the early 1700 s. In 1832, the Potawatomi ceded their lands and white settlers soon arrived. Agricultural activities still exist operated by descendants of the settlers as well as by newcomers. The Town is now a mix of agricultural and residential areas by old and new residents appreciate the Town s natural beauty and unique character. It was preservation of this community flavor and preservation of the natural beauty in mind that the citizens of the Town of Mukwonago embarked upon the original long range land use plan to encourage preservation of its quality of life to their heirs. 12
13 Employment Overview Employment Trends The Milwaukee PMSA comprises Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Washington and Waukesha counties. As of April 2012, there were 805,700 non-agricultural jobs in the PMSA, reflecting a decrease of 1.0%, or 7,800 jobs, from April 2011 (data on following page). The Manufacturing sector grew at the fastest pace over the past one-year period, increasing by 2.5% with the addition of 2,900 net new jobs; the Education & Health Services sector also experienced a notable gain of 2,600 net new jobs. The Government sector suffered the highest number of job losses, contracting by 5,400 net jobs; the Trade, Transportation & Utilities sector also experienced job losses totaling 3,500 net jobs. The unemployment rate for the Milwaukee PMSA was 7.4% as of April 2012, down from the April 2011 level of 7.8%. 13
