Disabled Access Guide for the James Clerk Maxwell Building. This building has been adapted for use by persons in wheelchairs and persons who have difficulty with mobility or are infirm. Seating is available. Accessible and standard toilets are also available. Introduction. The James Clerk Maxwell Building (JCMB) is a teaching facility which houses: the Biology Teaching Organisation; the School of Physics & Astronomy; the School of Mathematics; Biomathematics & Statistics Scotland; the Edinburgh Parallel Computing Centre (EPCC); the Centre for Science at Extreme Conditions (CSEC); and the IT Infrastructure Division. Please note that the IT Infrastructure Division is segregated. Location. The JCMB is located within what is referred to as the King s Buildings Campus of the University of Edinburgh which is well served by public transport. The building is within approximately three miles of the city centre and is within approximately two miles of the main student residences at Pollock Halls. The nearest railway line is at Waverley Station in the city centre. The nearest bus stop is located on campus in excess of approximately 200 metres of the JCMB. The number 41 Lothian bus service stops within the campus (see map on the following page). Details of timetables are available from Lothian Buses, from their offices within the city and online from: University staff and students also have access to a university bus service. Details of this service can be found online from: Persons arriving by vehicle can access the JCMB from Mayfield Road via Gateway 4 (see map on the following page). Persons with mobility difficulties and wheelchair users are able to access the JCMB at any of the four entrances (see map on the following page). However, wheelchair access to the secondary entrance, the North entrance and the East entrance is not currently recommended without assistance. Please note that the East entrance is only suitable for persons who intend to access the IT Infrastructure Division. Page 4.

Parking. Within the King s Buildings Campus there are numerous parking spaces. Anyone wishing to park within a university bay must display a valid parking permit. This includes staff, students, visitors and contractors. There are two university disabled parking bays located to the front of the JCMB, within approximately 40 metres of the main entrance. The bays are suitably surfaced for wheelchair users and the footpaths linking these bays with the main entrance are of a good standard and a negotiable gradient. Disabled parking bays image. There is also a standard university car park located to the front of the JCMB. However, this car park is unsuitable for wheelchair users as pedestrian egress is via several steps. The steps incorporate contrasting colour nosings, a tactile surface at the top/bottom and have handrails on both sides. Car park image. Steps image. Page 6.

Further standard university parking is located at the front of the Alexander Graham Bell building, approximately 40 metres from the JCMB North entrance (see location map). These bays are suitably surfaced for wheelchair users and the footpath linking these bays with the North entrance is of a good standard. However, wheelchair access at the North entrance is not recommended without assistance. Parking at the front of the Alexander Graham Bell Building image. There is additional university parking, including two disabled parking bays, located to the rear of the JCMB nearby the East/IT Infrastructure entrance (see location map). Wheelchair access from these bays to the East/IT Infrastructure entrance is currently via a road and is not recommended without assistance. Parking to the rear of the JCMB image. Page 7.

If you do not hold a valid permit and require use of a university bay, it is recommended that contact is made with Transport & Parking prior to your journey (see contact information page). Outside Access. The JCMB has four entrances. Access point map. The main entrance is the recommended access point for wheelchair users and persons with mobility difficulties. The footpaths leading to the main entrance are suitably surfaced for wheelchair users and are of a negotiable gradient. Footpaths leading to main entrance image. There are two sets of double width doors and an out of hours access door at the main entrance. The double width doors on the left are recommended for wheelchair access; these doors have access push pads which provide automatic access and egress. Please note that there is a threshold at the base of the main entrance doors. Page 8.

The out of hours access door is located to the right of the double width doors. This is a secure, manually operated door, for which, a valid university smartcard is required. The door is single width, opens inwards and there is a threshold at the base. There is a swipe card access point located to the right of the door within comfortable reach of wheelchair users. However, wheelchair access at this entrance is not recommended without assistance. Main entrance image. If you are a wheelchair user or have mobility difficulties and intend to access the JCMB out of hours, it is recommended that contact is made with the enquiries/servitors office prior to arrival (see contact information page). There is a secondary entrance located opposite the main entrance which is wheelchair accessible with assistance. The secondary entrance can be accessed via a level footpath from the front of the building, or alternatively via either a steep footpath or a flight of steps at the North side of the building. The steep footpath is approximately 25 metres long and does not incorporate intermediate level resting points or handrails. The steps have handrails on both sides but do not incorporate contrasting nosings or a tactile surface at the top/bottom. Steep footpath image. Steps before the secondary entrance image. Page 9.

The secondary entrance door is double width, is heavy and is operated manually. The doors open both inwards/outwards and there is a threshold at the base. Secondary entrance image. The third entrance is located to the North side of the JCMB and is wheelchair accessible with assistance. The footpath linking the North entrance and the parking bays which are located at the front of the Alexander Graham Bell Building is of a good standard, incorporates a drop kerb and is level. Footpath leading to the North entrance image. Page 10.

There is a small permanent ramp located immediately before the North entrance door and there is a threshold at the base of the door. The entrance door is double width, is heavy, is operated manually and opens outwards. North entrance image. The fourth entrance should only be used for the purpose of accessing the IT Infrastructure Division. This entrance is located to the East side of the JCMB and is wheelchair accessible with assistance. Access to the East/IT Infrastructure entrance is via a steep ramp or steps. The ramp is approximately 15 metres long and has handrails on both sides. The steps have handrails on both sides but do not incorporate contrasting nosings or a tactile surface at the top/bottom. Ramp image. Steps image. The East/IT Infrastructure entrance door is double width, is operated manually and opens outwards. The door handles are located higher than recommended for wheelchair users. Page 11.

East/IT Infrastructure entrance image. Internal Access. There is no internal access from the JCMB North, main or secondary entrances through to the IT Infrastructure Division. Upon entering the JCMB at the East/IT Infrastructure entrance, access is via a secure internal door which requires an appropriately authorised valid university smartcard and a PIN code to access. There is a swipe card access point located before and to the left of the inner door and there is an intercom call point located before and to the right of the inner door. The intercom call point can be used to gain assistance but is located higher than recommended for wheelchair users. The secure door is operated manually, opens outwards and contains handles which are located higher than recommended for wheelchair users. Upon entering the JCMB at the North entrance, there is a narrow double width door which requires both leaves opening to permit the passage of a wheelchair; the clear opening width of one leaf is 670mm. Out with the IT Infrastructure Division, wheelchair access from level one to the upper floor levels is only possible via the lift which is located close by the North entrance (see level one floor plan). Likewise, wheelchair access from the upper floor levels to level one is only possible via this lift. There is level internal access between the JCMB and the adjoining Erskine Williamson Building on floor levels two and three (see floor plans). There is a café located on level three of the JCMB which is wheelchair accessible from the main, secondary and North entrances (see floor plans). Page 12.

If you are a wheelchair user and intend to dine in the café, assistance is recommended. This is due to some of the self-service items being located out of reach of wheelchair users. Reception. There are several departmental receptions and an enquiries/servitors office within the JCMB. Enquiries/Servitors Office. The enquiries/servitors office is located close by the main entrance. Upon entering the JCMB at the main entrance the enquiries/servitors office can be accessed by turning right through a set of automatic doors, then proceeding down the corridor. The enquiries/servitors office is located approximately 8 metres down the corridor on the left. Automatic doors image. - The enquiries/servitors office is suitable for approach by wheelchair users.
