1 HOW TO achieve true colors of nature IN YOUR OUTDOOR LANDSCAPE PAINTING (PLEIN AIR) SPRING AND SUMMER IS NEAR STEP-BY-STEP DEMONSTRATIONS BY SAM ADOQUEI 1st STAGE General Drawing, Simplify Everything. In order to compose well and make complex subject paintable, the landscape artist must first transform natural shapes into masses of different abstract Shapes, masses of Color, Lines and Values. In the beginning, the artists should avoid seeing leaves, twigs, sky, lawn, water and buildings rather look for patterns of different shapes. Reduce nature down to simple abstract shapes; squares, rectangles, triangles, circles etc. Unify and simplify the values in the landscape. Painting by Samuel Adoquei, oil on canvas. 2nd STAGE Values, Color and Light (The most important stage) Be aware of the natural arrangements in values and arrangements in local colors. Successful outdoor painting relies on this stage. Start painting by continuously comparing value relationships, color relationships, light and dark relationships within local colors. Aim for the graphic look. Comparing and simplify everything in order to achieve graphic effect. Step back oftenly to see how the painting reads from far, avoid temptations to do details 3th STAGE Simplified and Unified Values, Color and Light. Light and Shade, Values, Color and Details Emphasize on accuracy within Masses of Shapes, Color, Lines and Values, introduce some details in the foreground in order to best judge texture between far, middle and foreground. Pay attention to light source. Make sure direction of light is clear, emphasize how light affects trees, buildings. Pay attention to how color of air in far ground relates to foreground. Demonstration for Painting Class by Samuel Adoquei, oil on canvas. 24x30inches For more info visit teaching page at: or

2 STEP-BY-STEP DEMONSTRATIONS BY SAM ADOQUEI 5th STAGE (Final Stage) Foreground, Middle Ground and Far distance Divide the picture into foreground, middle ground, and far distance, analyzing, comparing, and studying them before starting to paint. At this stage the painter should work on the perspective in information, Perspective in color, (colors in foreground are more truer or more chromatic while colors in far ground receive color of the air Perspective in values. Compare relationships between far distance, middle ground and foreground. Pay attention to depth and atmosphere.
