1 WHAT VESSELS MUST BE REGISTERED All vessels operating in Jamaican Waters are required to be registered with effect from January Only registered vessels may engage in Local Trade in Jamaican Waters. Local Trade includes all direct and indirect revenue-generating activities conducted in Jamaican Waters. For the purposes of registration, vessels are categorized as follows: Pleasure Crafts Commercial Vessels Exempt Vessels Exempt vessels are those vessels that have been granted exemption from registration by the Minister, under the Shipping Act. Commercial Vessels are all vessels engaged in the transport of people or goods or other commercial activities and include fishing vessels and vessels on which guests of hotels, boarding house and other such institution of lodging, are paying or non-paying passengers. Pleasure Crafts are vessels used exclusively for pleasure and or the transport of passengers that are not required to pay fees for the service. WHY REGISTER? REQUIREMENTS FOR REGISTRATION NON-FOREIGN REGISTERED All vessels engaged in Local Trade in Jamaican Waters if not foreign registered, must be registered as Jamaican Ships. Vessels to be registered as a Jamaican ship must be eligible for registration and be owned by a qualified individual or company otherwise must have an Authorized Agent appointed. QUALIFICATION FOR THE REGISTRATION OF A SHIP JAMAICAN Who may register a Ship in Jamaica? Jamaican Citizens Valid Jamaican Passport or National Identification Card (Tax Payer Registration Number) Persons deemed Jamaicans by virtue of the Immigration Restriction (Commonwealth Citizens) Act Certificate of Naturalization Number Page 2 of 6

3 Foreign Maritime Entities or Bodies Corporate subject to the laws of the jurisdiction of their incorporation and having (i) A person resident in Jamaica, appointed managing owner or agent Power of Attorney or document of Authority or (ii) A company which was established in and has a place of business in Jamaica, appointed managing owner or agent Certificate of Incorporation or Similar Documents of Establishment Notice of Directors or Similar Documents Bodies Corporate established under and subject to the Laws of Jamaica and having a place of business or a managing owner or agent in Jamaica Certificate of Incorporation or Similar Documents of Establishment Notice of Directors or Similar Document Business Identification Number Persons so specified by the Minister subject to affirmative resolution by the House of Representatives Procedure Page 3 of 6

4 All vessels intending to operate as a Jamaican Ship must: 1. Application for Registration as a Jamaican Ship (under 24 metres)* 2. Appoint an Authorized Representative or Managing Owner or Agent (where applicable)* 3. Provide the current Bill of Sale or satisfactory proof of Ownership* 4. Current Certificate of Registry and Transcript of Registry (for bareboat charter registration into Jamaica) 5. Submit Condemnation Order/Builder's Certificate (where applicable)* 6. Submit Certificate of Deletion, Cancellation or De-registration from its most recent registry or; * 7. Permission from the current registry of the ship, to bareboat charter register the vessel in Jamaica and; 8. Support from mortgagees for registration of the vessel in Jamaica* 9. Provide Crew documents and/or applications if applicable 10. Return the Carving and Marking Note duly completed (issued by the Registry during the process) 11. Have valid survey, tonnage and other certificates (where applicable)* 12. Submit all the above to: Page 4 of 6

5 The Registrar of Ships Maritime Authority of Jamaica 4th Floor, Dyoll Building 40 Knutsford Boulevard Kingston 5 By mail, registrar@jamaicaships.com or maj@jamaicaships.com or By Facsimile: Upon receipt of the Application for Registration, Surveyors from the Maritime Authority will visit the vessel to verify whether it is eligible for admission onto the Register of Small Vessels. Once the vessel conforms to all safety and administrative standards, a Jamaican Certificate of (Small Vessel) Registration will be issued. The validity of the registration of the vessel will subsequently be dependent on the vessel remaining safe and in accordance with the specifications of the JSR. An annual safety inspection will be conducted on the vessels and if found satisfactory, a Certificate of Safety will be issued to the vessel for operation over a period of one (1) year. 6 13. Remit Annual and other relevant Fees (biennial for pleasure craft) to The Accountant, Maritime Authority (Manager s Cheque payable to the Maritime Authority of Jamaica). 14. Indicate vessels to be inspected 15. Receive confirmation of inspection date from MAJ 16. Vessel inspected by MAJ and Safety Certification provided for another (two in the case of Pleasure Craft) year(s) Aspects of the Safety Certificate include: 1. Specifications of the vessel and engine 2. Stipulates restrictions (if any) on the vessel s operation 3. Indicates the range of allowable operation 4. Provides information on the safety equipment onboard 5. Gives information on the expiry of the Safety Certificate Fees Please see attached. Page 6 of 6
