1 Activity 1: WEEE everywhere! Learning objective Activity summary Subject links Pupils will learn our lifestyles are very dependant on electronic and electrical items and these items will all become waste if they are not recycled or reused. Quantifying and drawing electrical items found in the classroom. Mathematics Art and Design English Computing* *When extension activities are completed Extra resources required Drawing/colouring pencils Activity This activity has two stages: identifying and quantifying electrical items in the classroom and then drawing and labelling as many as possible. This can be completed individually or as part of a team. Before you begin ask the class to think of an electrical item in the room. Make a few suggestions so everyone in the class is clear what is meant by electrical items e.g. the interactive whiteboard. Ask the class to compare their answers; has everyone got the same total? Are they surprised at the amount of electrical items they ve found? What are the most common electrical items? Ask the pupils to repeat this activity either at home or in another room at school. Are there more or less electrical items than the first room? Why do they think that is? For safety, remind the pupils not to touch any electrical items whilst completing this exercise. Extension ideas Ask the class to research facts on waste electrical items so they can write a newspaper article encouraging the rest of the school to re-use and recycle unwanted electrical items. Example facts include: In the UK we throw away more than 1.2 million tonnes of electrical waste. On average, each person in the UK buys 2.8 new electrical items a year. Many electrical items such as mobile phones and computers contain valuable plastics and metals such as gold, silver, copper. Ask pupils to research what old, broken electrical items can be turned into through recycling and create a poster showcasing one of these transformations. Create a display in the school featuring all the posters to encourage the school to recycle their electrical items.

3 Activity 2: WEEE word jumble Learning objective Activity summary Subject links Pupils will learn about the wide selection of electrical items you can recycle at Hertfordshire Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs). This is a problem solving exercise where pupils need to decipher coded words to reveal the names of electrical items. English Mathematics Art and Design* *When extension activities are completed Activity As a homework activity ask the pupils what their parents or guardians usually do with their old/waste electrical items. Do they: a) Put them in the bin at home. b) Give them away to charities or friends. c) Take them to a Household Waste Recycling Centre (the dump/tip). Produce a tally chart on the class board to show the survey findings. What is the most common answer? Next hand out the worksheet. This is a code breaking exercise where the names of electrical and electronic items have been disguised using a code. The words can be deciphered using the code key at the top of the worksheet. All the items listed in this activity can be recycled at a Household Waste Recycling Centre. Once the worksheet is complete go through the answers together as a class. Can the pupils think of any other electrical items that are not included in the list? Ask them to reverse the code for a chosen item and give it to a friend to decipher. Extension ideas Repeat the survey with family members. Is there any difference in the results compared to the classroom survey? Design a campaign leaflet to encourage Hertfordshire residents to bring their waste electricals to the Household Waste Recycling Centre.
