reuse and recycle your old electricals
did you know? WEEE stands for waste electrical and electronic equipment and is the fastest growing waste type in the UK. Around 1.2 million tonnes of WEEE are generated each year, which is enough to fill Wembley stadium six times. By recycling WEEE new products can be made from the materials recovered through recycling. WEEE contains valuable metals, as well as plastics and other materials that can be used to make new products. In fact, one clothing iron provides enough steel to make 13 cans. It doesn t matter how old something is, it can always be recycled. So dig out all your old electrical equipment now. Last year north London residents recycled over 3,300 tonnes of electrical equipment. That s the equivalent of 717 African elephants.
what is weee? Waste electrical and electronic equipment. Did you know that anything that uses a plug, battery or charger, or anything that uses electricity, can be recycled? Here are some examples of what you can recycle: Hairdryers TVs Electric toothbrushes DIY tools Remote controls Tumble dryers Irons Computers Washing machines Kettles Fridges Toasters Games consoles Phones Electric cookers Food processors Radios Vacuum cleaners Headphones Electrical chargers
how can i reuse and recycle my old electrical items? Broken electrical items don t have to end up in the bin there are ways that you can recycle them or give them a new home. In north London recycling WEEE is easy and we offer many options to choose from; you can either use our free collection service from your doorstep, or alternatively you can recycle small electricals at one of over 70 on-street banks or by visiting our reuse and recycling centres. Did you know: In north London 98.9% of all the materials in TVs and small electricals sent for recycling? These materials are then used to make new products.
option one: book a free collection from your doorstep We offer a free collection for any item of WEEE, including large bulky items. If you live in Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Hackney, Haringey, Islington or Waltham Forest you can call to request a free collection. Items will be collected by ReStore Community Projects where they will be tested and then sold on at low cost to people, or families in need. Not only is this of great benefit to the environment but is also a very worthwhile cause to support locally. For more information visit 123recycleforfree.co.uk. 3 Reuse and Recycle your Old Electricals
option two: visit a Reuse and Recycling Centre There are nine sites in north London that take all WEEE items, big or small, as well as many other items, such as old batteries and lightbulbs: Barnet Summers Lane, North Finchley N12 0RF Camden Regis Road, Kentish Town NW5 3EW Enfield Barrowell Green N21 3AU Islington 40 Hornsey Street N7 8HU Waltham Forest King s Road, Chingford E4 7HR Waltham Forest Gateway Road (off Orient Way) Leyton E10 5BY Haringey Western Road, Wood Green N22 6UG Waltham Forest South Access Road E17 8AX Haringey Park View Road N17 9AY You can find out more about our sites including opening times and accepted materials by visiting wiseuptowaste.org.uk/wasteelectricals
option three: use a small weee bank Small electrical items can be recycled more easily by using a small WEEE bank. At these banks you can recycle any electrical item that is small enough to fit in the bank*. There are more than 70 banks across the north London area. Find your nearest bring bank by visiting wiseuptowaste.org.uk/wasteelectricals * WEEE bank opening dimensions are 52cm (20.5in) by 51cm (20 in). Items that are too large to fit, such as TVs, washing machines and fridges should not be left next to the banks please use one of the other options available.
If you would like to find out more, please visit wiseuptowaste.org.uk/waste-electricals Why not come and see us at an event near you. Find your nearest event by visiting wiseuptowaste.org.uk/events PJ59194
