The title of Lord Mayor is used to establish the mayor of a larger city with that of smaller subunits each governed by their own mayor. ge Profile: Years Share % % % ECONOMY ND LBOUR FORCE Occupational Typology (C/S/W): 37.0% / 45.0% / 18.0% Top Employers: Company llianz BMW Infineon Linde MN Munich Re Siemens The Munich Bicycle Development Concept Munich is a city that ranks highly in innovation and sustainability, particularly in the production of innovative forms of renewable energies. Therefore, it is no surprise that the city would develop a concept to try and reduce the amount of automobile pollution into the atmosphere. With the Munich Bicycle Development Concept, the city is striving to increase bicycle traffic up to 20% and therefore, reduce automobile traffic and pollution. The goal of this concept is not only to create more bicycle routes around the city but to develop a network of interconnected routes. This network would provide a convenient and environmentally friendly alternative for travelling around the city. One important goal for this project to develop this bicycle network off the main city motorways, allowing residents to safely travel to work, school, and other areas around the city. To build on this initiative, the city introduced a service in 2000 called calla-bike. With this service, bikes can be rented by phone at nearly all public phone booths and then left at any other place within the city. Furthermore, a new addition to the calla-bike service is an iphone app that allows you to locate and rent the bikes at the push of a button. Other services, such as city tours are also available on bikes, providing a fun and efficient way for tourists to experience the city. 1

In Germany 85% of adults aged have earned at least a high school degree. In 2005, Munich led German cities with more than 20% of their population obtaining a university degree. This was an increase from the year 2000, where 17.7% of the city s population had obtained a university degree. In the larger region of Munich, 17% of workers have obtained a university degree. Munich has eleven universities, colleges, and universities of applied science, making it the second-largest university city in Germany. Munich also has smaller educational institutions, which focus on more specialized skills, such as the cademy for Television and Film. Education Spending B Education spending in Germany is at about 4.6% of the GDP. Creative Class Share B+ Overall score for talent - 33% of workers in the Munich region work in a creative class occupations. In the city of Munich this percentage accounts for a share of 37%. The education system sorts students into different streams of education based on their strengths, allowing each student to achieve and contribute to society based on their skill set. 3
4 TECHNOLOGY SCORECRD Technology Score Justification Patents With 1,508 patents filed per one million people, Munich ranks second in Germany for highest number of patents filed Munich is considered one of the top five most inventive regions in the European Union. Innovation + Munich has a strong commitment to innovation, with 4.1% of their GDP spent on research and development in Furthermore, Munich was ranked 7th on the Innovation Cities Top 100 Index in Job Growth Creative Class Share High-Tech Index Sustainability/ Green Economy + Between the years of 1996 and 2004 the number of companies in the creative knowledge sector increased by 23.4% in the region of Munich and by 20.6% in the city of Munich. Furthermore, the unemployment rate in Munich in 2011 was 4.2%, which was well below the overall German rate of 7.1%. Munich contains a large creative class share. 28% of companies operating in Munich are in creative or knowledgebased industries. Furthermore, 33% of all workers in the Region of Munich work in the creative knowledge sector, and 37% of all workers in the city of Munich work in the creative knowledge sector. Munich has a broad range of high-tech industries that are active in research and development. These industries include communication technology, manufacturing, biotechnology, automotive and mechanical engineering, among others. Munich is the German leader in the production of renewable energy, such as photovoltaic, geothermal energy and biomass utilization. These are some of the most innovative forms of renewable energy in the environmental and sustainability industry. Munich is also the centre of research and development in the production of renewable energies as it is home to the General Electric R&D centre. Entrepreneurship B+ In 2001, Munich experienced a start-up rate of ten businesses per 1,000 people. lthough Munich has a higher start-up rate than in Germany, it is not as high as other global cities. When comparing the country of Germany to other countries it does not have a high entrepreneurial ranking. ccording to the 2012 Global Entrepreneurship and Development Index by George Mason University, Germany is not ranked among the top ten countries. Overall score for technology Due to its high innovation ranking, vast amount of high tech industries, rapid job growth and low unemployment rate, as well as its innovation in the environmental economy, Munich receives an in the technology category. 4
5 TOLERNCE SCORECRD Tolerance Score Justification Diversity B 23% of Munich s population is of non-german descent. In 2005, 15% of immigrants were from Turkey while a combined 22% were from Bosnia, Croatia, Serbia, and Montenegro. Greece, Italy and ustria contributed to 7% each while other European countries made up 19% of the immigrant population. Only 23% came from other countries around the world. Immigration B+ 23% of the county s population consists of immigrants from over 180 countries. Visible Minority Integration Multiculturalism Gay and Lesbian Population Religious Diversity C C B C lthough 23% of Munich s population is made up of non- German immigrants, a large proportion of them is made up of immigrants from other European countries such as Turkey, which made up 15%. In 2008, the city of Munich implemented a policy for ensuring the integration of foreigners into society and to allow for acceptance of minorities. This policy creates an awareness of minority and foreign groups, and allows these groups to either gain education or vocational training or enter the city s work force. First evaluations reveal positive effects of this policy, i.e. the share of minority and foreign born persons in vocational training grew from 11% in 2006 to 17% in In Germany there is virtually no representation of multiculturalism in the school curriculum or in the media. lthough Munich has a policy that helps to integrate foreigners into society, this policy fails to represent the diversity of these foreigners. Munich is accepting of gays and lesbians and has many amenities such as bars, clubs, and cafes that target this crowd. These are mostly found in the Glockenbachviertel area of the city. lthough relatively well accepted, the gay and lesbian population in Munich is not as large as in other global cities. The majority of citizens in Munich are of the Christian faith, with 39.5% being Roman Catholic, 14.2% Protestant, 3.7% Muslim and the rest being unaffiliated. Openness - lthough Munich does not have a very diverse population, the city can still be considered open due to its strong efforts to integrate and accept the foreigners live in the city. Civil Rights Germany lives under a constitution that protects the basic rights of human beings, allowing all Germans to live in freedom. The Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany regulates the relations between citizens and the state. 5
6 Tolerance Score Justification Bohemians Overall score for tolerance C B- Munich is a city with a large arts and culture scene. 2% of the workforce is employed in an artistic job and this number does not include freelance artists. However, even though Munich has the potential to become an artistic hub, the city lacks space for the creativity of these artists to grow. Due to pressures to constantly develop unused and abandoned areas of the city for commercial use and the high cost of living in the city, the growth of a bohemian culture in Munich is limited. lthough Munich has established a policy to help foreigners integrate into society, it still lacks a diverse population. 6
7 MENITIES ND QULITY OF PLCE SCORECRD menities and Quality of Place The SOBs (Symphony, Opera, Ballet) Museums Entertainment and Nightlife Crime Rate Score Justification The city of Munich is home to 7 orchestras, 2 opera houses, 1 ballet, and 58 theatres. The Bavarian State Ballet has held international status since 1988 and has performed all over the world. Furthermore, Gramophone magazine ranked the Bavarian Radio Symphony as the sixth best orchestra in the world. In 2002, the Pinakothek der Moderne opened in Munich helping to establish an area known as Munich s art zone. This zone also houses the other two Pinakothek museums (Neue Pinakothek and lte Pinakothek). Furthermore, the BMW museum and the Jewish Museum, which opened in 2005, contribute to the diversity of the museum culture in the city. Lastly, Munich houses The Deutsches Museum (The German Museum), which is the world s largest technology and science museum. In total Munich is home to 45 museums. Munich has over 6,000 licensed establishments, resulting in an exciting and diverse nightlife. Furthermore, Munich hosts many festivals throughout the year, including Oktoberfest and the Munich Film Festival. In addition, the city has 58 theatres and 90 cinemas. ccording to OECD, in % of people in Germany had reported experiencing at least one form of crime. This has decreased from 16.1% in 2000 and is lower than in many other European countries. Furthermore, a majority of crime committed in Germany is non-violent crime, such as theft. Munich has the lowest crime rate in Germany. Recreation Facilities + Munich is home to a variety of recreation attractions including churches, castles, museums and the Olympic Park, which hosted the 1972 Olympics. Recreational activities that would appeal to tourists and residents include river rafting on the Isar river, Lake Königssee, glacier skiing on the Zugspitze summit and Munich s English Garden, a 900-acre park. 7
8 menities and Quality of Place Neighbourhoods Scenes Score B Justification Munich has eight main neighbourhoods or districts. The Old Town district is the historic part of Munich housing buildings with medieval charm and containing many tourist sites. Maxvorstadt district is considered the cultural hub of Munich as it houses many of Munich s best museums. Haidhausen district is one of the wealthier areas of Munich and has taken on a French feel. It contains many eateries, delicatessens and boutiques. Schwabing district is known as the an artist s quarter and houses many local shops. The Olympic City district is where the 1972 Olympics were held and still contains the Olympic Park. Bogenhausen district is a very affluent area of Munich. The Sendling district is a very industrial and commercial area of the city. nd lastly, the Theresienwiese district is where Munich s famous annual Oktoberfest is held. lthough Munich does not have a gay and lesbian population as large as in Berlin and Cologne, the Glockenbachviertel area of the city is home to a gay scene popular with both residents and tourists. Furthermore, the areas of Schwabing and Maxvorstadt that surround the university area of the city make these a large student scene with many condos and housing available for rent. Munich does not house much of a bohemian scene due to the constant commercialization and high cost of living in the city. Public Transit - Munich s public transit system consists of an underground train system (U-Bahn), trams (Strassenbahn), buses, and suburban trains (S-Bahn) that connect the city centre of Munich to its surrounding regions. Munich s public transit system allows citizens to travel to all areas of the city. Bike Paths Civic Capital (NGOs, Non-Profits) B Through the Munich Bicycle Development Concept, Munich plans to increase their bike traffic to 20% (from 13% in 1997). The Munich Bicycle Development Concept is a plan to develop a series of interconnected bike routes throughout the city to give citizens a safer and convenient alternative to driving. There is not much data on civic capital for Munich specifically, however, Germany has a large number of NGOs and non-profit organizations that participate in work both domestically and internationally. Venro is an association of 120 German NGOs that operates throughout the world in order to promote sustainable development. lthough Germany as a whole has a large civic capital base many of these organizations do not seem to be based in Munich. 8
9 menities and Quality of Place Score Justification Built Form Investment - Munich contains a mixture of old and new architecture throughout the city. The Old Town district is mostly dominated by old, medieval looking, Baroque-style buildings and churches contrasted with some more modern, stylish buildings. Infrastructure (Utilities, Roads, etc.) Overall score for amenities and quality of place Munich has become the hub of transportation in Germany due to its top-notch railway connections and well-developed network of roadways. Munich airport had about 38 million passengers in 2011, an increase of 8.1% from 2010 and is ranked 27th on The Guardian s Top 100 world airports list from Munich was ranked as the number one most livable city in the world by Monocle magazine in both 2010 and 2012 due to its excellent quality of life. Furthermore, the city of Munich has an enormous amount of amenities for both tourists and residents making it a great place to live and to visit. For these reasons, Munich receives an score for amenities and quality of place. 9
